Samsung Galaxy S10e vs Apple iPhone XR

Samsung recently released the Galaxy S10e alongside the other Galaxy S10 lineup, as a direct competitor to the Apple iPhone XR. Just like Apple did with the iPhone XR, Samsung has given its "cheaper" variant some of the best features of its higher-end flagships, while reserving some premium features for its higher price point devices. Both handsets are priced equally at launch. So which one is better?

SIZE & HANDS-ON

The larger 6.1-inch display on the iPhone XR makes it slightly bigger than the Galaxy S10e with its 5.8-inch display. Samsung's budget flagship is also thinner and lighter. While some may prefer the larger display size, others may lean toward the smaller dimensions of the Galaxy S10e for easier one-handed use.

NOTCH VS. INFINITY-O

Samsung has introduces a screen cutout called "Infinity-O," essentially a hole punched into the display for the front camera. This allowed both Apple and Samsung to offer larger screen real-estate with slim bezels. Ideally, we hope that both the notch and the punch are interim steps on the path to actual full-display phones.

SCREEN RESOLUTION

The iPhone XR was criticized for its lower-resolution LCD display. Pure quality goes to Samsung, who outfitted the Galaxy S10e with a Full HD+ AMOLED panel and support for HDR10+ for superior picture quality.

STORAGE & EXPANSION

Samsung gives customers 128GB of storage on the base Galaxy S10e, compared to Apple's 64GB. Crucially, the Galaxy S10e also includes microSD storage expansion, which Apple's iPhones continue to lack.

Apple iPhone 8, iPhone XR, and iPhone XS prices lowered in China

Apple iPhone 8, iPhone XR, and iPhone XS prices lowered in China

Apple is working hard to improve sales of their iPhones in China by applying price cuts to the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. This news comes after National Business Daily reported that Apple was cutting iPhone production in the country.

Most of the models are receiving price reductions of 400 yuan (about $59), while the iPhone XR gets the biggest price cut of 450 yuan (around $66) bringing its price down to 5250 yuan (around $770). These are direct price cuts, unlike the trade-in deals Apple offered to customers in the U.S. behind reduced price banners.

Still, Apple has managed to add an asterisk to this deal, requiring customers to purchase the products from Apple Premium Resellers or licensed online stores if they want to take advantage of the reduced prices. Apple themselves are not offering the lower prices in their Apple Stores or website. Customers will, however, still be able to apply these reductions at Apple Stores if an old model is replaced.

China is not the only country where iPhones cost higher prices than in the U.S. and we are curious to see if Apple will attempt similar strategies to win back some brand loyalty in other regions around the world.

Get a free iPhone XR, Galaxy S9 or OnePlus 6T from T-Mobile for the holidays

Get a free iPhone XR, Galaxy S9 or OnePlus 6T from T-Mobile for the holidays

T-Mobile has launched a new holiday deals hub, where the carrier is giving customers the option of a free Apple iPhone XR, Samsung Galaxy S9 or among other devices when they follow certain conditions.

If the iPhone XR is what you are looking for, all you have to do is activate two lines and trade in an eligible device and the free device will be yours. That’s not bad at all, especially for those that were thinking of activating a few new lines on T-Mobile anyway.

Get a free iPhone XR from T-Mobile for the holidays

There are a few conditions that you need to pay attention to. For starters, the discount to the phone is applied to 36 months of bill credits, meaning that it will take three years for the phone to be fully yours and fully free. Last but not least, you have to trade in an iPhone to get the deal — and qualifying models include the iPhone X, iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, or an iPhone 6s or 6S Plus.

If you are in the market for a Samsung device, consider the free Galaxy S9, where you need to trade in a recent Samsung Galaxy phone, Google Pixel or Pixel 2, LG V20, G6, or later, OnePlus 5 or later, or a Moto Z2.

Get a free Galaxy S9 from T-Mobile for the holidays

Similar to the iPhone deal the discount will be applied over 36 months, but if you’re in the market for a new phone and plan on keeping it for a few years, it’s a great deal.

Next up we have the brand new OnePlus 6T. This deal is different than the iPhone and Galaxy S9 deals in that the credits are applied over 24 months, not 36 months. So if you are in the market for an Android smartphone and prefer being in a 2-year upgrade cycle rather than a 3-year one, this is perfect for you.

For the OnePlus 6T, you can trend in any of the same devices as for the Samsung Galaxy S9.

How to setup eSIM on your Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR

How to setup eSIM on your Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR

Apple's 2018 iPhones all feature e-SIMs (digital SIM) which enable customers to add a second line of service without using a physical SIM card. This allows owners of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR to easily switch to a local carrier when they travel internationally or have two different plans on the same phone.

Besides China, which is the only country to offer two physical SIMs on their 2018 iPhones, there are only 10 countries that offer eSIM through 14 wireless carriers.

Currently, if you are living in the US, your choices are limited with only Verizon and AT&T offering eSIM capabilities. T-Mobile is expected to enable eSIM support for the iPhone later this year, while Sprint who promises to add eSIM support doesn't have a specific date just yet.

[UPDATE] On Dec 17, 2018, T-Mobile announced that it will be offering iPhone users the option to enable eSIM support.

There are a few things you have to keep in mind before you setup eSIM on your iPhone. This won't be free service, as you are essentially adding a second line to your iPhone. Also, you will have to be running iOS 12.1.1 or later in order to use this feature. Last but not least, your phone will need to be completely unlocked, or both your SIMs will have to be from the same carrier.

Firstly you will have to purchase your eSIM account from the AT&T website. You will need your device IMEI number, which you can find under Setting > General > About on your iPhone. Scroll to the Digital SIM IMEI, and copy it by tapping and holding.

Once you have purchased your eSIM plan, you need to set up your iPhone for dual SIMs.
  1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan
  2. Scan the QR code from your carrier using your phone.
  3. Look at the bottom of your screen, and tap Enter Details Manually
  4. Select Add Cellular Plan and you will see both your plans displayed
  5. Label them as you wish (for example, 'Home' and 'Work')
  6. Hit Done, and select your default line on the next screen
Keep in mind that while both numbers can be active at the same time, which means you can receive a call on your second line while you are talking on your first one. However, you can only use data on one plan at a time. You can switch to the data plan you want to use by going to  Cellular > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Switching.

For first responders who use AT&T's FirstNet service, the carrier warns that the second SIM may interfere with the first SIM’s connectivity.

Verizon customers can perform the entire process using their My Verizon app on the iPhones. You can download the app directly on your iPhone through the Apple App Store or by using the following link:

Download
Price Free
Requirements iOS 10.0 or greater

Once you have installed the app, Open it and select Join Now and then Get Started. You will have to locate and register your IMEI which you can find under Setting > General > About on your iPhone. Scroll to the Digital SIM IMEI, and copy it by tapping and holding.

Now head back to the My Verizon app, select the field which reads Digital SIM IMEI Number, and past in the IMEI by tapping and holding and selecting Past. Then click Check Eligibility. (Note: Pre-pay plans will not work with the eSIM.)

If you are eligible, you will be led through a series of steps to activate your new service, including selecting a phone number (or porting your number), creating a PIN, and entering your billing information. Once completed, you will receive an email with a QR code. On your iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, and Add Cellular Plan, and then scan the QR code from the email so you can do the final account setup.

T-Mobile has released a new eSIM app enabling users to add a secondary prepaid line to any unlocked iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR. The new app is available to travelers coming to the US, existing T-Mobile customers, but also to anyone who wants to try the carrier's services.

You can download the T-Mobile eSIM app directly on your iPhone through the Apple App Store or by using the following link

Download
Price Free
Requirements iOS 12.1 or greater

Once you have installed the app, you will need to enter your email and follow the activation steps to select your plan. Also, if you're a T-Mobile customer, you'll have to enter a new email address if it's already connected to a T-Mobile account.

At the moment, T-Mobile offers customers three prepaid plans for eSIM activation, but the carrier said it will soon support postpaid plans with eSIM as well:

  • Tourist Plan with 1000 minutes, unlimited text, and 2GB of LTE data for $30; 21-day expiry;
  • Simply Prepaid with unlimited voice, text, and 10GB of LTE data for $40; 30-day expiry;
  • T-Mobile ONE Prepaid with unlimited voice, text, and data for $70; 30-day expiry.

Keep in mind that you will require an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR in order to use this app.

The Ellen Show audience members receive free iPhone XR

Ellen's 12 Days of Giveaways
The Ellen Show is currently running their 12 days of Giveaways promotion, where the celebrity talk show host gives her audience different gifts on each of the twelve days. On Day 5 of the giveaway, every audience member was given a free Apple iPhone XR for attending.

The gift was given after host Ellen and guest Julia Roberts played the popular Heads Up game, where two people face each other, one with a smartphone on their head, and the other giving clues to help the person with the smartphone guess what's on their phone screen. Depending on the category being played, it could be the name of a song, movie, television show or celebrity. In this case, the theme was Christmas.

After the game ended, the two headed over to the front to take a selfie with the iPhone XR. They followed up by promoting the device, citing that it is available in six different colors and touting that it offered the longest battery life on an iPhone. Following that Ellen announced that all the audience members would be walking away with a brand new iPhone XR, much to their joy. You can relive that moment in the video embedded below.

Apple increases trade-in credit on old iPhones for a limited time

Apple GiveBack is a service provided by the manufacturer, which pays customers credit towards a new iPhone when they trade in their existing one. For a limited time, Apple has increased the amount of credit they are giving towards certain older devices when you purchase a new iPhone.

As part of this promotion, Apple is giving customers up to $300 in store credit when they trade in an iPhone 8 or older and purchase a brand new iPhone from Apple. The iPhone 8 Plus and newer devices are not affected by this promotion, The exact amount of trade-in credit is determined by the phone you’re handing over:

iPhone 6s Plus $150 $250
iPhone 7 $175 $250

The promotion is reportedly set to run through the rest of this year and end on January 31st, 2019.

Apple releases iOS 12.1 build 16B94 for iPhone XR

Apple releases iOS 12.1 build 16B94 for iPhone XR

Apple released iOS 12.1 last week for all compatible iOS devices, including the newly released Apple iPhone XR. However, it looks like the company has now released a slightly updated version of iOS 12.1 solely for the iPhone XR.

The new build carries the 16B94 build number compared to the 16B93 build number on the original iOS 12.1 release. What's interesting is that the update is only showing up for customers who haven't already updated to iOS 12.1, indicating that it likely wasn't meant to replace the original build.

If you are running an older version of iOS on your iPhone XR, you can now download the iOS 12.1 build 16B94 on your device by heading to Settings > General > Software Update. You can also manually download the IPSW file from Apple and install it using iTunes.

While Apple hasn't shared any specifics on the changelog for this build, you can expect all the improvements from iOS 12.1 including eSIM support, Group FaceTime and more.

So why exactly is Apple offering the iPhone XR at a lower price than its premium iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max ?  - The iPhone XR has an LCD screen, while the XS and XS Max feature OLED displays. The iPhone XR has no 3D Touch, unfortunately, and its bezel is slightly bigger.  Apple has also opted to use stainless steel on their premium iPhones, while the iPhone XR features uses 4000 series aluminum. Additionally the iPhone XR features a single rear camera instead of dual cameras, but it is still capable of Portrait Mode photos by digitally applying the background blur (bokeh) effect.

Apple iPhone XR officially announced

Apple announces iPhone XR

Besides unveiling two new flagships in the form of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, Apple also took the covers off an affordable iPhone XR. This variant of the iPhone will be available in a range of colors, feature and edge-to-edge display, FaceID and gesture based navigation.

Design

iPhone XR - Colors
Just like its costly siblings, the iPhone XR borrows heavily from the design of the iPhone X offering a modern, bezel-free design,  and glass panels on the back and the front. Apple has replaced the higher quality stainless steel with 7000 series aerospace-grade anodized aluminum. The handset also comes with IP67 water and dust resistance, slightly lower than the IP68 protection found on the XS devices. The iPhone XR will also be offered in 6 vivid colors:  white, black, blue, coral, yellow and (Product) Red.

The front of the device, much like the iPhone X is all display, with the notch on the top housing a True Depth camera and Face ID functionality. Since there is no home button the device will use the gesture based navigation available on all new iPhones.

Display

The iPhone XR comes with an LCD display instead of an OLED one. The 6.1 inch panel has a 828 x 1792 pixel resolution. Apple is calling this their "Liquid Retina" display and claims it is "the most advanced LCD ever put in a smartphone".

iPhone XR - Display

Apple has replaced 3D Touch on the iPhone XR with haptic touch, similar to what the company uses on its ForceTouch trackpads on its MacBooks. While haptic touch can be used to quickly launch the camera or the flashlight from the lockscreen, it is not known if it will fully replace the functionality provided by 3D touch on these devices.

HARDWARE

Apple A12 Chipset

Apple A12
The iPhone XR is powered by the same Apple A12 Bionic chipset found on its flagships. This chip also happens to be the first 7nm chip to reach the market, featuring a six-core CPU based on Apple's Fusion architecture. The new processor is said to be 15% faster and 40% more efficient than its predecessor.

Apple has also improved its custom quad-core GPU on the A12 promising a 50% increase in speed. Considering how well the iPhones last year performed against its competitors, we can expect even better output from this year's iPhones.

Additionally the A12 Bionic chipset has an improved neural engine, which has been upgraded to an eight-core setup compared to the dual-core design from last year. The neural processor on the A12 is capable of handling up to 5 trillion operations per second compared to the 600 billion on the A11.

RAM

While the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max offer 4GB of RAM, the cheaper iPhone XR comes with 3GB, much like last year's iPhone X and iPhone 8 models.

Camera

iPhone XR - CameraApple has given the iPhone XR a single 12MP camera on the rear with a 1.4-micron pixels (previously 1.22) sensor. Even though it doesn't have the secondary camera, Apple still allows the device to capture Portrait mode with bokeh (blurred background) effect.

Just like the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max, the iPhone XR camera features Smart HDR with faster sensors, an enhanced ISP and advanced algorithms.

The larger sensor also allows for better low-light photos with improved image fidelity allowing more light to hit the sensor.

You also get sharper action shots thanks to the faster sensors, Smart HDR and zero shutter lag that Apple promises with their iPhone XR. The iPhone XR is also capable of capturing 4K video and wider stereo playback with improved low light performance, stereo recording and extended dynamic range in videos up to 30 fps.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone XR will be available for pre-order starting October 19th, with shipping set to begin on October 26th. The handset will be available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB variants and in  white, black, blue, coral, yellow and (Product) Red. Pricing is as follows:
