Microsoft's Xbox Live cross-platform gaming coming to iOS and Android

Xbox Live cross-platform gaming coming to iOS and Android

Microsoft is expected to unveil a new Software Development Kit (SDK) during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2019 which will allow developers to include Xbox Live features on their iOS and Android games.

The conference will take place between March 18 and March 22, and Microsoft is scheduled to make a presentation about cross-platform gaming during the event.

Microsoft's SDK will allow developers to include Xbox Live features on a compatible game across iOS, Android, Windows, Xbox, and even a Nintendo Switch. Additionally, players on these platforms will be able to carry on their phone information like their list of friends, gaming accomplishments, clubs they belong to and more.

Microsoft says that by adding Xbox Live capabilities to the top two smartphone platforms, the number of devices that support it will soar from 400 million gaming consoles to more than 2 billion devices.

"Xbox Live is one of the largest, most engaged gaming communities on the planet with decades of experience providing managed game services to developers that save you time and unlock all of the social and engagement features that players love...Now Xbox Live is about to get MUCH bigger. Xbox Live is expanding from 400M gaming devices and a reach to over 68M active players to over 2B devices with the release of our new cross-platform XDK...Get a first look at the SDK to enable game developers to connect players between iOS, Android, and Switch in addition to Xbox and any game in the Microsoft Store on Windows PCs."

-Microsoft

Microsoft already offers similar support for Minecraft, where players can sign into their Xbox Live accounts and play across iOS and Android.

Get the Microsoft Surface Pro (5th Gen) with keyboard bundle for only $635

Microsoft is running a sale on the Surface Pro 5th Gen from 2017, offering it bundled with the Platinum Signature Type Cover for only $635. The deal will be available until February 8 or “while supplies last.”

The deal is available to customers from the US Microsoft online store, as well as physical retail locations. The tablet usually retails for $749 with the keyboard priced at an additional $160. That makes the discount for this bundle a massive $275.

The Surface Pro on sale features a 12.3-inch display with a 2736x1824 pixel resolution, 128GB of SSD storage, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, full-size USB 3.0 port, a microSD card reader, a 3.5mm headphone jack and is powered by a 7th Gen Intel Core M processor with 4GB of RAM. Microsoft promises that the Surface Pro is capable of 13.5 hours of battery life in continuous video playback.

This Surface Pro bundle is an excellent alternative to the Apple iPad Pro, which has a smaller display and costs more for its 64GB variant with no bundled keyboard.

If you are looking for a solid portable tablet with productivity in mind, make sure you take advantage of this Surface Pro deal while stocks last.

What's new in Windows 10 19H1

What's new in Windows 10 19H1

Microsoft is currently working on their next big feature update to Windows 10, codenamed 19H1 which adds some exciting new features and improvements to the platform. With this build, Microsoft is primarily focussed on the end user experience, improving the already existing features and offering a more stable OS experience for their customers.

Let's dive into the update and look over some of the key new features and improvements customers can expect from Windows 10 19H1 when it arrives.

A new light mode for Windows

A new light mode for Windows

While companies like Apple introduced a Dark Mode for the first time on macOS with Mojave, Microsoft is introducing its customers to a light mode. This visual change switches the usual dark taskbar, Start menu, Action Center, touch keyboard, popups, and related menus and buttons from dark to light. This is a refreshing change to the overall look of Windows, giving it a more modern feel. This also makes Windows more consistent across its interfaces, which in the past were a hybrid of dark and light.

Microsoft will make the new light mode default for Windows 10 Home devices that come with Windows 10 19H1 pre-installed. Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise PCs will have the dark mode on default, but customers will always be able to switch between the mode they like better.

An improved Start Layout

An improved Start Layout

Microsoft has also updated the default Start Layout on Windows 10 19H1, by making it simpler. In previous versions, the Start Menu would appear cluttered with several unnecessary apps when the user set up their accounts for the first time. Starting with 19H1, this default layout has been simplified to just two groups of six apps in one column, placing the essentials first and foremost.

Microsoft will still continue to push third-party apps through the Microsoft Store by default, but these apps and games will be packed away in a folder on the Start Menu.

This new Start Menu is much more approachable by the user, offering a great starting point for using your new Windows device.

A more fluent design

A more fluent design

Microsoft Fluent Design language has been adopted in even more places across Windows 10 19H1. Certain system elements like context menus and popups now feature a wonderful drop shadow effect, which looks excellent with the new light theme. In addition, jump lists and context menus in Start, Taskbar and modern apps now feature Fluent Design reveal and acrylic effects, which provide a nice blur aesthetic to many areas that uses modern context menu controls.

Microsoft is also adding acrylic blur to the login screen, which makes things look more modern and clean.

Improved quick actions in Action Center

Improved quick actions in Action Center

Quick Actions are being updated in Windows 10 19H1, with improvements to the edit mode for quick actions in a major way. No longer will the user be thrown into Settings to edit what shows up in quick actions, instead of being entered into a dedicated edit mode that lets the user configure what quick actions are available directly from within the Action Center.

Additionally, Microsoft has changed the brightness quick action from a button to a dedicated slider that can be pinned to quick actions in the Action Center. Users have been requesting Microsoft add a dedicated brightness slider to quick actions for years, and Microsoft is finally doing it with 19H1.

Windows Sandbox

Windows Sandbox

Microsoft is adding a new feature to Windows 10 called "Windows Sandbox," that gives users the ability to run a virtualized instance of Windows 10 on top of their live install. This is great for those who want to run a program that they're not so sure about, without putting their entire system at risk. Windows Sandbox is off by default, but once enabled will run a clean version of Windows 10 in a virtual machine every time you go to use it.

This feature is only available for Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise editions, as it's a feature aimed primarily at power users.

Improvements to Windows Update

Improvements to Windows Update

Windows Update is receiving further improvements in 19H1, most of which are designed to make Windows updates less annoying. To begin, Microsoft is bringing the ability to pause updates for 7 days to Windows 10 Home, a feature that was previously only available on Windows 10 Pro.

In addition, a new feature called "intelligent active hours" will automatically adjust Active Hours so that Windows updates don't interrupt the user when using their PC when outside of Active Hours. For example, if you've set your Active Hours between 8am and 9pm, but one night you're working on something past 9pm, Windows will now automatically adjust Active Hours so that a pending update won't install while you're using your PC outside of Active Hours.

Finally, Microsoft has changed up the Windows Update UI slightly so that many configurable options and settings are available at the forefront of Windows Update. Features like the ability to pause updates is now available to the user without having to dive into advanced options.

A new Office hub app

A new Office hub app

The pre-installed Office for Windows app has a new look, which emphasizes recent documents and Office web apps. It's a much cleaner looking app and makes jumping into your recent documents very easy, as well as creating new documents on the fly.

These are just a few of the features you will come across when Microsoft releases Windows 10 19H1 this year. Besides that expect several minor improvements and underlying changes to the platform as Microsoft polishes the latest version of Windows ahead of its release. Windows Insiders will be the first to experience some of these features, and if you are part of the program, your feedback could help shape the future of Windows.

Microsoft Windows 7 reaches final year of extended support

Microsoft Windows 7 reaches final year of extended support

January 14, 2020 marks the final day of support from Microsoft for Windows 7. The date marks the first Patch Tuesday of 2020, after which Windows 7 will no longer receive updates, fixes, and security fixes.

Windows 7 was first introduced by Microsoft in July 2009 but it usually takes enterprise customers several months into its lifecycle before they implement it to their user base. Microsoft's newest version, Windows 10 launched in July 2015 and has since reached more than half of all Windows devices in the enterprise.

Windows 7 and older versions of Windows are still run by the rest, but the support clock is slowly ticking down. Microsoft officials have announced two ways that Windows 7 users can continue to get security updates beyond the January 14, 2020 date. Both of these ways are designed for business customers, not consumers.

Microsoft will sell paid Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESUs) on a per-device basis, with the price increases each year. These ESUs will be available to any Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise users with volume-licensing agreements, and those with Windows Software Assurance and/or Windows 10 Enterprise or Education subscriptions will get a discount. These ESUs will provide Windows 7 Extended Security Updates through January 2023.

Microsoft also will provide ESUs for no additional cost to customers who buy the Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop service, which is designed to allow users to virtualize Windows 7 and 10, Office 365 ProPlus apps and other third-party applications by running them remotely in Azure virtual machines. Those wanting to virtualize Windows 7 after Microsoft support ends in January 2020 will be able to do so for three years by using WVD. WVD still is not available in public preview but is expected to be sometime this calendar quarter. Microsoft has not yet announced a final availability date or pricing for WVD.

End of "mainstream" support for Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 installed occurred on January 13, 2015. Mainstream support includes no-charge incident support and paid incident support; security update support; and the ability to request non-security updates. End of extended support for the product, on January 14, 2020, means the end of paid support; free security update support; and Extended Hotfix Support.

Windows 8.1 customers will continue to get security updates from Microsoft for free until January 10, 2023. Windows 10 users get free support based on the date when their version of Windows 10 was introduced. (See this Windows lifecycle support page from Microsoft for details.)

Windows 10 October 2018 Update is now available for download

Windows 10 October 2018 Update is now available for download

After resolving all of the issues and bugs, Microsoft has released the October 2018 update for Windows 10. You can download the update to your device through Windows Update, or wait for Microsoft to automatically push it to your device during the company's monthly Patch Tuesday.

Some of the issues the update faced include compatibility issues with iCloud, VPN clients, and Trend Micro’s security software. Microsoft has been very transparent in detailing all of the issues over at the company’s support site, and it has now noted that Windows 10 October 2018 Update can be installed on your device reliably.

What's new in Windows 10 October 2018 update

Windows 10 October 2018 Update includes a number of new features. Perhaps the largest change is a new cloud-powered clipboard that will allow Windows 10 users to copy content across machines, and store a history of copied content in the cloud. It’s particularly useful if you use a desktop PC at home or work, and then a laptop on the go.

cloud-powered clipboard on Windows 10

The Timeline feature on Windows 10 is also getting some new features with the October 2018 Update. Microsoft is building new extensions for both Chrome and Firefox that will allow the rival browsers to plug into the Timeline feature and sync tabs. This will make Timeline a lot more useful for Chrome users, even though some third-party extensions already exist and offer this functionality.

The update also includes the Your Phone app which is designed as a companion app to more closely align Android and iOS to Windows 10. Currently, most of the features are Android exclusive, allowing users to quickly sync photos taken on an Android device, or send and receive text messages with Windows 10 connecting to your Android phone.

Microsoft Launcher on Android will also gain access to Timeline, allowing you to sync more actions and content from an Android phone to a Windows 10 device. Timeline support is also coming to Microsoft Edge in a beta version due to debut in early November, allowing you to quickly access your tabs whether they were open on a PC or the mobile version of Edge.

Now with the Windows 10 October 2018 Update is rolling out, Microsoft will now shift towards the next major release Windows 10 version 1903 (also known by the “19H1” codename) will be the seventh major refresh to the platform. The update will include a new desktop experience, updates to the Start Menu, improvements to Search and more.

Fortnite updated (7.10) with “14 Days of Fortnite” event and a rotation of limited-time modes

Fortnite updated (7.10) with “14 Days of Fortnite” event and a rotation of limited-time modes

Fortnite continues its holiday-themed content with the release of patch 7.10 which brings the “14 Days of Fortnite” event, allowing you to relive the game’s greatest moments, whether you’re a fan of enormous team battles or smaller skirmishes.

The “14 Days of Fortnite” event will kick off on Wednesday, December 19, at 9 a.m. ET, and bring a rotation of limited-time modes to play. Smaller modes will change out every single day, while larger modes will swap out every two days — they’ll be a mixture of players’ favorite modes as well as brand new ones. Alongside the modes, you’ll also be able to complete a challenge for a free item every day, and holiday outfits will be available to purchase in the item shop.

Other changes in battle royale mode include reduced hip-fire effectiveness on the Heavy Assault Rifle, as well as improved balloon controls. Ground vehicles will now slide on ice, and Stormwings will now take more damage when hitting objects or running through structures. Vehicles with four wheels will no longer damage the driver when landing correctly, and it should now be easier to pick up items near turrets.

The Fortnite Creative Mode has received several winter-themed additions. Four new winter-themed islands are available, as are six prefabricated winter villages. You’ll find special holiday prop packs to set throughout your levels, and logs and tree stumps for getting everyone in the cozy Christmas spirit. A number of other fixes and tweaks have been made to Creative as well, including fixes to player animations, fixes for editing issues, and a fix for Switch players getting kicked from a server after players maxed out their island memory.

The Save the World is also getting the new “Frostnite” event. You must keep a burner filled with BluGo in order to keep the heroes from being frozen solid, and you’ll have to deal with enemies like the Krampus Smashers. Weekly challenges related to the mode will be added later.

Fortnite is a cross-platform video game available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android. The updates will be available directly on your devices through their respective app stores.

Microsoft is building a Chromium-based version of Edge for Windows and Mac

Microsoft is building a Chromium-based version of Edge for Windows and Mac
Microsoft Edge made its debut on Windows 10 back in 2015, built from the ground up with a new rendering engine known as EdgeHTML. Edge replaced Internet Explorer and was designed to be fast, lightweight and secure. However, it launched with several issues resulting in users rejecting it. Now it looks like Microsoft may be taking a different approach to web browsing on Windows.

According to Windows Central, Microsoft is building a new web browser based on Chromium, which uses the Blink rendering engine as Google Chrome. Microsoft's new web browser is codenamed "Anaheim" and will reportedly take the place of Edge as the default browser on Windows 10. However, instead of replacing Edge itself, the change will happen under the hood.

This will allow Microsoft to release the Chromium-based Edge for Windows 7, Windows 8 and even Apple's macOS according to Windows Corporate VP Joe Belfiore. This will be the first time Microsoft has supported an internet browser for Apple computers since Internet Explorer for Mac got its final update in 2003.

The Chromium-based Edge is a big deal for Windows users, who are in-in with the Microsoft ecosystem. The new Microsoft web browser should be able to compete head-to-head with Chrome, Opera and Firefox.

This also means that Microsoft will be joining Google, Samsung, Intel and other big Chromium contributors to improving that browsing engine. The Chromium project will also gain from all of Microsoft's innovations, like its smoother text scrolling, its laptop battery life optimizations, and security innovations.
Microsoft Edge on Android and Microsoft Edge on iOS should not be affected by this change, as they already use rendering engines native to the platform they are on.

Microsoft is expected to introduce 'Anaheim' during the first half of 2019, and Windows Insides on the Fast Ring should be among the first to test it out. However, this new web browser will no longer be a part of Windows 10 updates and instead will be pushed out via Windows Update across all Windows platforms.

How to download Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 ISOs

How to download Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 ISOs

In the past Microsoft only offered Windows 10 ISO downloads on their website, removing access to download older versions of Windows. However, according to a new report Microsoft now has ISO downloads available for Windows 7 and 8.1, alongside Windows 10.

Paul Thurrott reports that previously Microsoft allowed downloading Windows 7 and Windows 8 ISOs through Digital River. But later restricted downloads to Windows 10 only. Fortunately, it looks like they have had a change of mind, by making ISO files for Microsoft’s other supported Windows versions from the Microsoft Software Download site. Check out the links below:
You will require a valid 25-digit product key before you can download the Windows 7 ISO. Once you download the ISO file, you can copy one to USB or DVD disc to install Windows or mount the ISO (on Windows 8 or newer) and use it as a virtual disk.

Microsoft releases battery life update to Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4

Microsoft releases battery life update to Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4

Microsoft has released a UEFI firmware update to the Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4 which will include a new Battery Limit feature designed to extend the life of the lithium-ion batteries that power the tablets.

Once this update is installed, users will be able to toggle an option that will stop the battery on these tablets from charging when it reaches 50% of its capacity. If the battery is already charged to more than 50% capacity when the tablet is plugged in, Battery Limit will force the battery to discharge until it is down to 50% of capacity.

According to Microsoft, this Battery Limit feature is made for Surface Pro models that are plugged in most of the time. The company used Surface Pro unit could be constantly hooked up to an outlet at retail stores as an example of where this feature can be used. While the feature is currently available for the Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4 only, Microsoft plans on adding it to other Surface Pro models in the future.

On the Surface Pro 4, you can toggle Battery Limit by booting into Surface UEFI (Power and Volume up when turning on the device). Select Boot Configuration > Advanced Options and toggle Enable Battery Limit Mode to On. Surface Pro 3 users can access their Surface UEFI by heading to Kiosk Mode > Battery Limit > Enabled.

You can learn more on Battery Limit by heading to Microsoft's support page in the source link below.

Microsoft Surface Studio 2 officially announced

The Microsoft Surface Studio 2 is now official and according to the company, is the most powerful Surface device they’ve ever built. This all-in-one (AIO) system like its predecessor has the unique ability to transform into a massive drawing tablet, making it a niche device with unique uses.

With the new Surface Studio, Microsoft has made several improvements claiming it is 38% brighter and with 22% more contrast than before. The new Surface Studio also has 4,096 levels of pressure for its display, 50% more graphics power thanks to its new NVIDIA chip, and comes with 2TB of SSD storage.

What's strange is that Microsoft has chosen not to adopt 8th gen Intel processors for the Surface Studio 2, despite adding them to their Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop 2. Instead the Surface Studio 2 features 7th generation Intel Core processor.

The Surface Studio 2 is now available for pre-order at a starting price for $3500. The AIO is expected to be released on November 15, later this year and is currently only available for online purchase.

Microsoft Office 2019 now available for Windows and Mac

Microsoft Office 2019 is now available for Windows and Mac, bringing updated versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Video, Project, Access, and Publisher. Office 365 subscribers should note that this is not an update to that platform, and is instead a version meant for non-subscribers.

Currently, Office 2019 is being made available to commercial users, and Microsoft says the consumer versions will arrive in the “coming weeks,”. Office 2019 ships with “classic versions” of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Essentially by purchasing Office 2019, you get features already available to Office 365 users. However, these versions will not be updated regularly with new features. Microsoft Surface Go officially announced

Microsoft Surface Go

The Microsoft Surface Go was officially unveiled today as the company's latest productivity-oriented tablet. This new slate from Microsoft aims to directly compete with the Apple iPad, offering portability and versatility. The Surface Go is set to enter the market right in time for the back to school season, and Microsoft made sure to point out how ideal it's form factor was to read school textbooks in portrait mode.

Design

The Surface Go is visually a smaller version of the company's flagship tablet, the Microsoft Surface Pro. The tablet weighs in at 1.15 pounds and has an 8.3mm thickness. The Surface Go has slightly larger bezels and slightly rounder edges compared to the Surface Pro, further complementing its portability. The body is still made up of the magnesium chassis, building on top of the solid design that the Surface line is known for.

Specs

Surface Go with Surface Pen and Surface MouseThe Surface Go has a 10 inch PixelSense display, which is compatible with the Surface Pen (sold separately), allowing 4096 levels of pressure. The tablet is powered by a 7th generation Intel Pentium Gold processor with either 4GB or 8GB of RAM. You get 64GB of eMMC storage in the base model, but you can go as high as 256GB if you wish.

The tablet seems ideal for reading books, productively on Microsoft Office or consuming media, and boasts up to 9 hours of battery life. Charging up your tablet can be done through its USB Type-C 3.1 port.

Software

The Surface Go comes with Windows 10 Home pre-installed in S-Mode. This means that by default you can only run pre-installed apps like Microsoft Edge and anything you download through the Microsoft Store. While users can unlock the full functionality of Windows 10 Home for free, it is important to point out that the hardware is optimized for apps downloaded through Microsoft's ecosystem.

If you are planning to replace your regular computer with this tablet, you will likely face some performance issues and lags.

Pricing and Availability

The Microsoft Surface Go is the cheapest in Microsoft's Surface lineup, priced at only $399. The base model which arrives on July 10th comes with Wi-Fi only, but expect an LTE version later in 2018.

If you want to add the Surface Pen to your purchase, it will cost you an additional $99, while the Surface Go Signature Type Cover will cost you between $99 and $129 depending on the color you choose.

The Surface Go will be available in US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain starting July 10. It will reach more markets in the coming weeks.
