Get up to $450 off the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL with monthly installments

Best Buy has a great deal on the Google Pixel 3 and the Google Pixel 3 XL, offering the flagship Android smartphone at $450 off its usual retail price with "qualified" activations.

This means that you will be required to commit to a two-year device payment plan with Verizon in order to walk away with Google's top device. You'll save $150 "instantly", as well as 300 extra bucks in the form of bill credits.

Save $450 on a Google Pixel 3 on Verizon from Best Buy

The Pixel 3 starts at $14.58 instead of $33.34 a month, for a total of only $350 for the 64GB model. The 128GB model is priced at $18.74 a month for two years for a total of $450 (compared to its $900 retail price). The Pixel 3 specs include a 5.5-inch display, an impressive 12MP rear camera, dual 8MP front cameras, a fingerprint scanner, wireless charging, IP68 water and dust resistance, a respectable 2915mAh battery and a Snapdragon 845 chipset with 4GB of RAM.

The larger Pixel 3 XL will cost $18.74 per month for a total of $450 for its 64GB configuration, while the 128GB model will cost $22.91 per month for a total of $550. With the Pixel 3 XL, you get a 6.3-inch display with a wide-notch housing the dual front-facing cameras.

Both smartphones can be purchased in "Just Black", "Clearly White", and "Not Pink" color options.

You can now buy Google Fi SIM cards from Best Buy

You can now buy Google Fi SIM cards from Best Buy

Back in November, Google dropped the "Project" branding from their wireless service and relaunched it as Google Fi with support for most Android phones and iPhones. While customers were previously only able to purchase the service from the company's website, Google is now also offering Google Fi through Best Buy.

The announcement was made on the Google Fi subreddit, where the company stated that Fi SIM cards will be available in "500+" Best Buy locations across the U.S. Google's not saying which stores will have the cards, and the number refers to about half of all Best Buy stores, so be sure to check before making the trip.

The SIM cards will cost $10, but you'll get that back as a service credit so they ultimately end up free. Best Buy will only be offering Google Fi SIM cards for full service, not data-only.

It is important to note that while you can buy Google Fi SIMs at Best Buy, the staff will not be able to help you activate the SIM. In order to get your Google Fi service up and working, you still have to make sure you have a compatible phone, sign up via the website and activate using the Google Fi app. Google does have online chat help available, but if you're someone who prefers in-person help, Google Fi probably still isn't the option for you.

Google releases February Android security patch for Pixel smartphones

Google releases February Android security patch for Pixel smartphones

Every month, Google releases security bulletins for Pixel devices and the Android ecosystem. This is followed by Google releasing updates for its own device portfolio. While many Android devices do not receive monthly security updates, the Essential Phone is one of the few non-Google smartphones to keep up-to-date with the Pixel lineup.

February's security patch doesn't include any security patches, but contains various functional updates and improvements to various parts of the Android platform and supported Pixel devices. The most severe of these issues is a “critical security vulnerability in Framework that could allow a remote attacker using a specially crafted PNG file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process.”

Some of the functional changes to Android were detailed in a post by 9to5Google - "About phone" lists Device name, primary Google Account, Phone number, and Emergency information, in addition to other hardware details like IMEI, IP, Wi-Fi MAC, and Bluetooth address.

This page was previously the first entry in the System menu but is now its own item in Settings just above Tips & support. This listing happens to also note your device model inline for quicker access.

Meanwhile, About phone has a section for Legal information and Regulatory labels. The February security patch adds a “Safety & regulatory manual” section that is essentially a copy of the printed Safety & Warranty booklet that’s included with devices. This web view includes safety warnings, regulatory information by country, and details related to accessibility.

The update also includes some visual tweaks, including new icons, layout, and organization.

You also will find improvements with the update installation process, where it will take into account whether your phone is in use, including when you visit the System updates page. If so, the process — including the download — will be paused. Of course, users can manually “Resume” the download. Once your device is finished installing and optimizing apps, a reboot is required to complete the process. Users now have the option to restart the phone when they are sleeping, to complete the update.

The OTA files and factory images for the Pixel devices can be found at the links below. Find the Android security files for your device and click "Link" to start the download. XDA Developers has a guide on how to install this patch on your Pixel.

YouTube for iOS updated with iPad Pro 2018 support

YouTube for iOS updated with iPad Pro 2018 support

Google has released an updated version of YouTube for iOS which adds support Apple's 2018 iPad Pro lineup. The updated YouTube has been optimized for both the 11-inch and 12-inch iPad Pro displays.

You can download the updated version of YouTube for iOS directly on your iPad through the Apple App Store or using the link below:

Requirements iOS 10.0 or greater

Interestingly the official changelog on the App Store doesn't reveal the iPad Pro optimization, with Google instead opting for a generic changelog like they usually do.

We added shinier bells and whistles. Because who doesn’t like a good upgrade??

Unfortunately, it appears that the update isn't without its flaws, as the navigation bar on the iPad Pro now sits on top of some of the app's UI elements as you will notice in the image below.

Google is going to have to rethink their overall iPad UI or tweak it on their next release.

Google Assistant will soon check into your flights

Google Assistant will soon check into your flights

Google Assistant is receiving an update which will let you check into your flights just by saying "Hey Google, check in to my flight." You will no longer have to dig through emails or screenshots to find your confirmation number in front of the kiosk. Google Assistant will work with airlines to seamlessly complete your check-in for you.

The service will first launch on United Airlines' domestic flights. Google Assistant will also be able to retrieve and save your boarding pass, and proactively remind you to check into your flight when it's ready. You don't have to install separate airline apps to get these features, either.

Additionally, Google Assistant will also book you a hotel room via Choice Hotels, AccorHotels, InterContinental Hotels Group, Priceline, Expedia, Mirai, and Travelclick. You can also keep your itinerary, restaurant shortlists and group expense notes under Assistant's purview, as it's getting support for Google Keep, Any.do, Bring! and Todoist.

Google has still to reveal an exact timeline for the rollout of this feature but has plans to expand it to other airlines and hotel booking services in the future. Fortunately, users who frequently travel domestically via United Airlines will be able to experience the convenience of having Assistant handle most of the hassle of travel.

Google releases January Android security patch for Pixel smartphones

Google releases January Android security patch for Pixel smartphones

Google has started rolling out the January Android security patch for their Pixel smartphones. These security patches are used to exterminate security bugs, but also act as a way to send out improvements and specific features to Google's smartphones.

January Android security patch for PixelFor example, the December update included 13 functional patches to the Android platform, along with a fix for RAM management and camera performance on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. With the January update improves the quality of audio recorded while making a video on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

It looks like the January update is smaller than some of the previous monthly patches. It also looks like Google will be releasing the update at the same time for the first-gen Pixel and Pixel XL, which in the past couple of months was updated a little later than the 2017 and 2018 Pixel models.

The update will be pushed out to all three generations of Pixel smartphones OTA (over-the-air) and you will receive a notification when it is available for your device. Once you receive the notification, make sure your battery is fully charged, and that you are connected to Wi-Fi before initiating the update.

Such updates are usually sent out in waves so you may not receive the notification immediately. If you haven't received the update in a few days, you can try manually checking for it under Settings > System >Advanced > System update.

Google discontinues security updates for Nexus 6P and Nexus 5x

The Huawei Nexus 6P and LG Nexus 5X are the last two smartphones in Google's Nexus lineup, and over the past year have received security updates alongside their Pixel replacements. But it looks like Google will be discontinuing these updates with the release of January's Android security patch.

Both smartphones were commercially released back in the fall of 2015 and were guaranteed two years of Android version updates and three years of security patches. Both handsets receive their Android 8.0 Oreo update and were set to receive their last security update in November. Google, however, would include both handsets in their December update too.

Come January however, Google seems to have left its aging handsets out of this month's security update. With your devices becoming less secure in the coming months, it may be finally time to bid your aging Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X goodbye.

Google Pixel 2 XL gets $400 discount on Best Buy's Doorbuster Deal of the Day

Google Pixel 2 XL gets $400 discount on Best Buy's Doorbuster Deal of the Day

Best Buy recently kicked off their '20 Days of Doorbusters' event, offering various items on discount every day. Today marks day 4 where the retailer was supposed to highlight discounts on big screen smart 4K TVs. However, they have also discounted the Google Pixel 2 XL by $400.

Unfortunately, this isn't a direct discount. Instead, you will have to commit to a device payment plan on Verizon. This means that you will be paying $18.74 per month (instead of $35.41) for 24-months for a total cost of $450 (instead of $850) for your Pixel 2 XL. The model comes with 64GB of storage and is available in black or panda (black and white). If you would rather pick the 128GB model it will cost you $21.99 monthly. There are no bill credits involved, as your savings will be directly reflected in reduced monthly payments.

While the Pixel 2 XL has been succeeded by the Pixel 3 XL, it's still a powerful device with access to the latest Android Pie update from Google. Its specs include a 6-inch POLED display with a 2880 x 1440 pixel resoltion, a very impressive 12MP rear camera, a 3520mAh battery and a Snapdragon 835 chipset with 4GB of RAM.

Google releases December Android security patch for Pixel and Nexus devices

Google releases December Android security patch for Pixel and Nexus devices

Today Google is releasing the December Android security patch for Pixel and Nexus devices, and detailed the number of issues the update is set to fix. Besides the security improvements, the update is also expected to fix RAM management and camera performance on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

The Pixel / Nexus Security Bulletin for December 2018 notes 13 "functional patches," in addition to one security update. One of the most important issues addressed by this month’s patch is aggressive memory management that would prevent some apps from running simultaneously. For example, snapping a picture with the camera app stopped background audio playback for some users.

Last month, Google confirmed that the fix would "keep background apps from being prematurely closed," referring to it as "Improved memory performance in certain circumstances" and "Improved camera capture performance" in the December security patch. It applies to both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 devices.

According to Google, other improvements to the camera include "Adjusted autofocus behavior" and "Improved camera shutter performance" for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. You also get "Improved contouring on HDR color on certain media apps" for the new phones. Meanwhile, the Pixel Stand benefits from "Improved notification visibility" and "Improved hotword performance."

Additionally, the update brings "Improved Android Auto compatibility" for the second and third-generation Pixel devices, as well as "Improved audio performance for when using Android Auto in certain vehicles" on the Pixel 3.

Another issue which involved flickering on the Ambient Display is likely fixed with "Improved Always On Display triggering." Other fixes include "Improved USB-C Audio accessory detection" on the Pixel 3 XL, while all Pixel phones benefit from "Adjusted volume behavior when toggling Bluetooth" and "Improve unlocking performance when using Bluetooth."

Google Photos update features Express backup to save mobile data

Google Photos updated with Express backup to save mobile data

Google is releasing an updated version of their Photos app, with a feature called Express which will make sure you don't exceed your monthly data cap when you upload high definition photos or video over cellular data.

Express is coming to Google Photos to save your data
Obviously, the best solution to your data issues is to upload your content when you are connected to Wi-Fi, but this solution is for those moments you don't have access to a Wi-Fi network. According to a report, Express will allow your photos to be backed up using reduced photo sizes.

In fact, photos will be compressed to 3MP and videos to Standard Definition. Express will join the two previous options offered for storage with the app, High Quality, and Original Resolution.

The update will also allow users to set a limit on the amount of data that Google Photos can use daily, offering 5MB, 10MB, 30MB, and unlimited options. The 'Express' setting will be found in the 'backup settings' of Android devices.

The report also suggests that Express is currently being tested for a select number of Android users in India before it is offered throughout the country, and later to other markets. Download the latest version of Google Photos using the link below and look out for Express backup in an upcoming update.

Rebranded 'Google Fi' now supports iPhones and most Androids

Rebranded 'Google Fi' now supports iPhones and most Androids

Google announced today that their Project Fi wireless service will be rebranded to Google Fi and will now work on more devices. Starting today, Google Fi will work with iPhones and most Android devices, including handsets from Samsung, LG, Motorola and OnePlus.

Project Fi was first launched back in 2015 and used the T-Mobile and Sprint network in the US to offer expanded wireless coverage. With Google Fi, you can get unlimited calls and texts for $20 per month; data costs an additional $10 per GB. Any additional data charges are capped at $60/month even if you use more than 6GB of data, meaning you won't get charged over $80/month for unlimited talk, text, and data. Additionally, Google Fi also offers international roaming in 170 countries with the same data usage fees it charges in the use (including the $60/month charge cap).

Google's own Pixel smartphones, along with a select number of handsets are sold on the Google Fi website as 'Designed for Fi'. According to Google, these devices are capable of intelligently shifting between three (T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular) mobile networks and millions of Wi-Fi hotspots, phones designed for Fi give you smarter coverage in more places.

As part of an ongoing promotion, if you pick a 'Designed for Fi' phone from Google, the company is giving you "the same value back in your choice of travel gift cards, which you can spend on flights with Delta and Southwest or lodging with Airbnb and hotels.com,"

While Google now allows you to bring your own phones, certain features like Fi’s unique network switching are only available on phones designed for Fi. However, Google promises that you’ll still have a great experience whatever phone you use. You can check if your device is compatible with Google Fi here.

Fi for iOS is still in beta according to Google. A new Google Fi for iOS app has been released to help customers track their usage, bills or contact support. You will require iOS 11 or higher and one of the following handsets in order to use Google Fi on your iPhone:
  • iPhone XS

  • iPhone 8 & 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7 & 7 Plus

How to launch Google Assistant on iPhone with voice, using Siri Shortcuts

How to launch Google Assistant on iPhone with voice, using Siri Shortcuts

One of the features Apple debuted with iOS 12 was Siri Shortcuts, which allowed third-party apps to make use of Apple’s voice assistant by tying trigger phrases to certain functions within the app. Now according to Verge, the latest update to Google Assistant lets you trigger it using Siri.

So for example, you can record a phrase like "Where's Google" into Siri shortcuts, link it to the Google Assistant, and use your voice to trigger the app by saying, "Hey, Siri, Where's Google". This, in turn, will trigger Google Assistant allowing you to follow up with a request from Google's voice assistant.

While this is sure to annoy Apple, we are curious to see if the Cupertino based company responds in any way. While the Android platform is more open to allowing competitors to add their own services in place of Google's Apple isn't known for sharing.

In any case, many users prefer using Google Assistant over Siri, for its ability to better understand voice commands, and execute tasks. This new way to quickly activate Google's Assistant will be a welcome addition to many users and we hope Apple won't do something petty like disabling this functionality.
