Rebranded 'Google Fi' now supports iPhones and most Androids

Google announced today that their Project Fi wireless service will be rebranded to Google Fi and will now work on more devices. Starting today, Google Fi will work with iPhones and most Android devices, including handsets from Samsung, LG, Motorola and OnePlus.

Project Fi was first launched back in 2015 and used the T-Mobile and Sprint network in the US to offer expanded wireless coverage. With Google Fi, you can get unlimited calls and texts for $20 per month; data costs an additional $10 per GB. Any additional data charges are capped at $60/month even if you use more than 6GB of data, meaning you won't get charged over $80/month for unlimited talk, text, and data. Additionally, Google Fi also offers international roaming in 170 countries with the same data usage fees it charges in the use (including the $60/month charge cap).

Google's own Pixel smartphones, along with a select number of handsets are sold on the Google Fi website as 'Designed for Fi'. According to Google, these devices are capable of intelligently shifting between three (T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular) mobile networks and millions of Wi-Fi hotspots, phones designed for Fi give you smarter coverage in more places.

As part of an ongoing promotion, if you pick a 'Designed for Fi' phone from Google, the company is giving you "the same value back in your choice of travel gift cards, which you can spend on flights with Delta and Southwest or lodging with Airbnb and hotels.com,"

While Google now allows you to bring your own phones, certain features like Fi’s unique network switching are only available on phones designed for Fi. However, Google promises that you’ll still have a great experience whatever phone you use. You can check if your device is compatible with Google Fi here.

Fi for iOS is still in beta according to Google. A new Google Fi for iOS app has been released to help customers track their usage, bills or contact support. You will require iOS 11 or higher and one of the following handsets in order to use Google Fi on your iPhone:
  • iPhone XS

  • iPhone 8 & 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7 & 7 Plus

Once you have checked your device compatibility, you can order a SIM kit (for free) from Google. Getting Fi today will make you eligible for $200 of service credit.
