Virgin Mobile offers new $20 plan starting today through Walmart; customers can choose unlimited calls or text

Virgin Mobile
Starting today, Virgin Mobile will offer a new $20 monthly payLo plan through Walmart. Customers who choose this plan will have to decide whether they primarily use their device for calling or texting.  If you choose calling, you can customize your plan with unlimited calls (and fifty monthly texts) or unlimited texts (and fifty monthly calls)

The plan is available only for those with the feature phone ($31.99), or the even more basic Kyocera Kona ($15.99). You can still connect to the internet if you need, but it will cost you an additional $1.50 per MB. This is quite expensive, so you would likely want to hold off on going online unless it is a real emergency.

If you're looking for a simple, basic plan for either making/taking calls or for texting, the $20 payLo plan will get the job done. Add an additional $10 a month and you can get 1500 minutes of voice, 1500 texts and 30MB of data. Go to $40 a month and you're getting unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 50MB of data. MMS messages are 25 cents each.

Apple iPhone 5s discounted on Virgin Mobile

Apple iPhone 5s
Various U.S. wireless carriers and retailers have been providing different types of discounts and incentives to get people to purchase the new Apple iPhone 5s and the Apple iPhone 5c. Now Virgin Mobile is stepping it up a notch with the cheapest deal I've seen on an unsubsidized phone.

Virgin Mobile has discounted the iPhone 5c to $359.99, while the iPhone 5s will cost $459.99 (both prices are for the 16GB base models). This is the lowest unsubsidized price I can recall seeing on Apple's latest phones. As a point of comparison, an unlocked 16 GB iPhone 5c purchased directly from Apple will cost you $549 while an unlocked 16 GB iPhone 5s costs $649.

Virgin Mobile is a prepaid wireless carrier that is owned by Sprint, and the devices they sell are accordingly locked to Sprint's CDMA network. The company offers what it calls "Beyond Talk" plans with unlimited messaging and 2.5 GB of 4G data starting at $35 per month.

You can find Virgin Mobile's products on store shelves at big box retailers like Best Buy, but the deals on iPhones appear to be web exclusives.

Do these low prices of Virgin Mobile's iPhones and their monthly rates make you consider switching? Or is Sprint's network still too spotty in your area? Let me know what you think in the comments.

The Apple iPhone 5 has been selling extremely well and Apple has stated that they have been “blown away” by the demand on their sixth generation smartphone. In fact the demand  has not only been limited to the United States with a couple of Canadian carriers reporting that they have stopped taking orders for the new iPhone.

Bell Canada reported that they have had “overwhelming success” and Virgin Mobile Canada have both reported that there has been a “huge demand” for the device.

While pre-order are sold out on both carries, the phone will be available for purchase online and through operator’s retails stores on September 21st, when the iPhone launches.

Meanwhile the three major U.S. carriers have also seen overwhelming demand for the new iPhone with sold out inventories and pre-orders delayed by 2-3 weeks.
