NVIDIA Tegra X1 announced, with twice the power of Tegra K1

NVIDIA held its CES press event on Sunday night, introducing its next mobile "super" chip. The 256-core NVIDIA Tegra X1 brings over one teraflop of processing power to mobile devices, which is twice the power offered by the NVIDIA Tegra K1.
The NVIDIA Tegra X1 will be available in the first half of the year, and is designed for "embedded products, mobile devices, autonomous machines and automotive applications."
The NVIDIA Tegra X1 includes a 256-core Maxwell GPU, 8 CPU cores consisting of 4 Cortex-A57 and 4 Cortex-A53 CPUs, 60 fps 4K video (H.265, H.264, VP9), 1.3 gigapixel of camera throughput and the chips are produced using the 20nm process. With the powerful Maxwell graphics power on the NVIDIA Tegra X1, the company says that the chip is the first mobile processor that can hold its own against supercomputers and game consoles.
According to NVIDIA, the Tegra X1 has more power than the fastest supercomputers of 15 years ago. And while ASCI Red took up 1,600 square feet and used 500,000 watts of power (another 500,000 watts was used to cool the room the supercomputer was in), the Tegra X1 is the size of a thumbnail and draws under 10 watts of power.

NVIDIA Shield tablet with LTE receives Lollipop update

The NVIDIA Shield Tablet with LTE is now receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, according to an announcement from the company on Twitter. The update arrives a week after it was released to its Wi-Fi sibling.
In addition to the features and improvements from Lollipop, the update also adds some improvements to NVIDIA's own apps. You can now look forward to layer support, custom color creation, and stencils in NVIDIA's Dabbler app, as well as streaming access to full versions of over 20 PC games via Grid in the Shield Hub app.

NVIDIA Shield tablet receives Android 5.0 Lollipop

As promised, the NVIDIA Shield tablet is now receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop software update OTA (over-the-air). It's also one of the the first non Nexus-branded Android products to be updated to Lollipop.
Besides the new features and improvements from Lollipop, the update also brings some extra features to NVIDIA's own apps. Dabbler, their drawing app used in conjunction with the Shield Tablet's bundled stylus, will support layers, custom color creation, stencils, and drawing uploads directly to Google Drive. It will even tie in with the system's native Twitch streaming, so you can broadcast your artistic skills live to the world.
The Shield Hub is also getting a Material Design update. It will have added a link to Grid games in addition to existing access to Android titles and games stored on a paired PC. You'll also get access to 4K console mode, which is good news for those of us with ridiculously nice TVs, and Y-cable support for those that really need to plug everything into their device. According to reports, the Shield Portable will also be receiving the update in the near future.

NVIDIA SHIELD tablet now available for purchase
The NVIDIA SHIELD tablet was announced last week and immediately offered on pre-order to those who were interested in purchasing the gaming slate. Starting today the new tablet is available for purchase and costs $299 for its 16GB variant. Keep in mind that this is the Wi-Fi only model. An LTE-enabled model with 32GB of internal memory is expected to be released at a later date at a price of $399.

Nvidia Tegra K1 announced with 192-core Kepler GPU, set for H1 2014 release
Nvidia has officially unveiled its new Tegra K1 mobile processor which comes with an impressive 192-core Kepler GPU. The Nvidia Tegra K1 will first come in a combination of that new Kepler graphics chip and a quad-core Cortex A15 (plus one shadow A15 core) in the first half of 2014.Additionally NVidia has managed to replace the ULP GeForce graphics chip it used earlier on its mobile processors with a desktop class GeForce Kepler graphics on its Tegra K1 chip. Nvidia showed a presentation slide making it clear that this means convergence on the graphics front and we can expect its future mobile roadmap to match the desktop one.
While the processor still has the standard 32-bit ARMv7 instruction set, NVidia has actually widened the memory width to 40 bits to avoid the 4GB trap. With a 40-bit memory addressability, devices featuring the first-gen Tegra K1 would have a higher limit for the maximum amount of RAM - 8GB instead of just 4GB.
Technically, the Tegra K1 comes after the dual-core Tegra 2, and quad-core Tegra 3 and 4. Nonetheless, "it's almost inappropriate to call it Tegra 5, because it's simply not linear," CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "It's the most successful architecture we've created."
Interestingly, Nvidia mentioned that the Tegra K1 actually delivers more horsepower than even consoles like the PlayStation 3 at a much lower power consumption of just around 5 watts. We don't know under what load exactly, but this sounds just like a power target for tablets, so expect to see this new chip in tablets rather than smartphones. After multiple delays of the Tegra 3 and 4 chips, we really hope Huang and crew have it all figured out now, and we’ll get to see more OEMs embracing the new chip. After all, the new Kepler is one thing that should really up the ante in mobile gaming, a field where the Tegra K1 really shines.

NVidia Tegra Note 7 receives Android 4.3 Jelly Bean software update
The NVidia Tegra Note 7 is now receiving Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, which is the first major software update for the tablet. The update is being pushed OTA (over-the-air) and includes an enhanced stylus experience, a new camera capability and the regular bug fixes.
With the new update, the 5MP camera on the Note 7 will support AOHDR (always-on high-dynamic range) for "more lifelike images across a range of lighting conditions", and also gains video stabilization. As for the stylus-related novelties, these include: overall response improvements, support for left-handed users, and a DirectStylus help option under the settings menu.
Now that Android 4.3 is available, we hope that NVidia will work on bringing Android 4.4 KitKat to their $199 tablet.

NVidia announces Tegra 4i and Tegra 5 processors
NVidia has announced the upcoming availability of its latest mobile SoCs, the Tegra 4i and Tegra 5. The processors themselves will be available in the first quarter of 2014, and devices powered by them will probably be available no later than the second quarter of the year.The budget Tegra 4i is part Tegra 3, part Tegra 4 system chip, which will be used in mid-range devices. Unlike its bigger sibling (Tegra 4), the Tegra 4i comes with an LTE-Advanced modem on board, but sports fewer GPU cores compared to the Tegra 4. However, the 4i is more power-efficient due to its updated version of the quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU in comparison with the more powerful Cortex-A15, which is used in Tegra 4.
Nvidia Tegra 5, a.k.a. Logan, will not come with LTE modem inside. Nevertheless, the Icera i500 LTE modem, which Nvidia provides with the Tegra 4i, is certified and suitable for the Tegra 5 as well. The Tegra 5 will allegedly have one of the fastest GPUs around – the 192-core GPU Kepler, and will be a direct rival to Qualcomm's Adreno 400, which is also expected to be unveiled next year. Interestingly, Jen-Hsun Huang also admitted that customers will be delighted by the manufacturer that will produce these first Tegra 4i and Tegra 5 devices.
