Motorola Moto X (2014) for AT&T receives Android 5.0 Lollipop

Motorola Moto X (2014) receives LollipopIt looks like the Motorola Moto X (2014) on AT&T is now being updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Motorola was repeatedly soak testing the update recently, and the fact that the update is rolling out may indicate that the soak test has ended successfully. The update is being pushed out to handsets OTA (over-the-air) and is reportedly around 652.5MB in size.

With Android Lollipop, your second-generation Moto X will gain the new Material Design inspired user interface, an improved notification tray with a swipe down for quick Settings, Lock Screen notifications, the new 64-bit ART compiler, a redesigned multitasking screen, improved battery life with Project Volta, and more.

Because of the size of the update, it is recommended that you connect to WiFi to save on your data allowance, and ensure your battery is appropriately (at least 50%) charged before installing the update. According to the report, it looks like the update has just started rolling out, so it may be a few days before it is available for all handsets. In any case you should receive a notification when the update is available for your device. You can also try manually checking for the update under Settings.

Motorola Moto X (2014) receives Android Lollipop in Canada

Motorola Moto X (2014) in Canada receives LollipopMotorola has launched the Android 5.0 Lollipop software update to the second-generation Motorola Moto X units in Canada. The update brings Android 5.0.1 along with the 22.11.6 software version and is headed to the Moto X (2014) owners on WIND, after a small number of devices were affected from the initial Lollipop update.

Motorola is also pushing out Android 5.0.2 to first-generation Moto G owners in Canada. This leaves only the first-generation Motorola Moto X and the Motorola Moto E without the Lollipop update.

The update will be pushed out to the handsets OTA, and it is recommended that users are connected to WiFi and have their batteries appropriately (at least 50%) charged before installing the update. If you have not received the OTA notification, you can try manually checking for the update under Settings on your device.

The Motorola Moto X (2014) with Lollipop has the following new features and improvements:

Material Design - You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device - from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.

Notifications UI & Priorities - In order to alert you to the most timely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
  • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
  • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
  • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
  • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
  • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
  • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).

New Interruptions & Downtime Settings - You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions. You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify. The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify. e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.

Recent Apps (Multi-tasking) - The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications. For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards. This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.

Moto Display and Ambient Display  - While your phone’s display is off, Moto Display will continue to surface relevant notifications to you using the low-power Contextual Computing Processor. It will also intelligently react when you use the Approach gesture under Moto Actions.
  • Android Lollipop now includes a similar feature, called Ambient Display, that displays notifications like those shown on the lockscreen. If you prefer to try the new Ambient Display feature, you can uncheck the Moto Display setting in the Moto app. Note: Ambient Display does not use Motorola’s low-power core and will turn on more of the display, so battery life may be impacted. The Moto Actions Approach gesture will not wake Ambient Display.
Moto Assist and Downtime - Moto Assist integrates the new Downtime feature within Android Lollipop to control when you don't want to be disturbed. Moto Assist also now uses the new Interruptions settings so that you can customize exceptions, such as letting only people on your starred contacts list get through.

Flashlight - Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).

Share your Device - You can now set up multiple user accounts on your phone. Guest mode is enabled by default. You can give calling and text privileges to other users of your device, or restrict them as you like in the Users menu under Settings.
  • Note that the personalized Moto experiences (Moto Assist, Moto Voice, Moto Display, Moto Actions) and Motorola Connect are for the owner account only.
  • The Motorola Camera and Gallery applications support multiple user accounts.
Pin a view/app - Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.

Battery - The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging. You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.

Smarter Internet Connections - With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.

Performance - Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance. After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process. Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.

Smart Lock (Trusted Devices) - Android Lollipop adds native support for allowing trusted devices to keep your phone unlocked (such as your Moto 360, a Bluetooth car kit or headset, etc.). Smart Lock replaces the prior trusted device capability in your Motorola phone. Note that you will need to add your trusted devices back after the transition to Lollipop in the Security settings menu under Smart Lock.

Motorola Moto X (2014) for Verizon and AT&T receive Soak Tests

Motorola Moto X (2014)Motorola is sending out Soak Test invites to Verizon customers have registered their second generation Motorola Moto X in the Motorola Feedback Network. Its very likely that the build that is being tested is Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Interesting, Verizon posted the availability of the Lollipop update along with a detailed changelog of the new features for the Moto X way back in November 2014.

Moto X soak test inviteLast week Motorola sent out similar invites for the Motorola Moto X Pure Edition and the second-generation Motorola Moto G.

But the first generation Moto X is still facing delays in receiving Lollipop due to issues with its processor.

Motorola handset owners can head over and register on the Motorola Feedback Network if they want to join in on future Soak Tests. This process is where Motorola employs a select group from the Network to test a software update by sending it out at first to a small number of handsets. If things go as planned, Motorola then disseminates it to all owners of a particular model. By keeping the Soak Test small, Motorola is able to keep a better handle on things; the Soak Test also limits the manufacturer's exposure in case the update bricks some phones.

To be eligible to participate in a Soak Test, you must register with the Motorola Feedback Network. You also need to promise that you won't leak information about the test to anyone.

[UPDATE] AT&T customers who own the Motorola Moto X (2014) are also reportedly receiving invites to partake in a soak test.
