Amazon Whisper Mode now available on Echo devices in the US
Accessories Alexa Amazon UpdatesOne of the new features Amazon demonstrated during its September 20 event, was Whisper Mode. As its name suggests, you can have Amazon whisper responses back to you when this mode is enabled. Now it looks like this feature is available to Amazon Echo devices in the US.
Amazon has been working on this functionality for over a year, as it continues to explore various more natural ways for Alexa to interact with users. As you can imagine, getting the AI to intuitively react to advanced conversational cues like whispering isn't an easy task.
Whisper Mode could prove particularly useful for parents worried about waking up their children or simply those looking to keep the noise down in the morning or evening for various reasons. This could work great if you are checking the weather conditions when you are leaving for work or sports scores before heading to bed, without waking up your spouse. Alexa will understand your whispered requests, and respond back with a whisper.
You can enable Whisper Mode on your Alexa enabled device using the Alexa app. Click the menu button on the top left of the app, select Alexa Account > Alexa Voice Responses and enable the 'Whispered Responses' option. Alternatively, you can just tell Alexa to "turn on whisper mode" Keep in mind that this feature will only work on devices in the United States.

Facebook Portal coming to TVs with 'Project Ripley'
Accessories Facebook TVFacebook Portal was the social network's first step into consumer hardware with their introduction of two smart displays that kept you connected to your Facebook account at all times. Now with 'Project Ripley' Facebook plans to take it one step further.
In what is looking to be another bold hardware initiative, Project Ripley hopes to add a Facebook-connected camera on top of your TV. This would in turn allow video calling on your big screen, while supporting Facebook Watch along with other streaming platforms.
The advantage over a device like this over Facebook Portal and Portal+ would be its significantly lower price, due to the fact that it would be using your existing TV display. Currently, Spotify and Pandora are the only big names supporting Facebook's Portal devices. In order for this venture to be successful, Facebook would have to partner with more high-profile content providers like Netflix and Amazon if it wants to compete with Google, Roku and Apple. Project Ripley is "still in development" and is set for a spring of 2019 release.
Facebook is reportedly also working on “Edgefield”, “Innatum”, and “Sequoia” projects. These ambitious, futuristic, revolutionary products include an armband capable of translating sounds into vibrations that can be understood through human skin, a device reading brainwaves to anticipate what the user intends to type, and a virtual object projector supporting advanced AR experiences like displaying virtual board games on a physical table.

Rakuten Kobo Forma announced, a stylish, feature-packed e-reader for $280
Accessories TabletsThe Rakuten Kobo Forma is a new feature packed e-Reader that aims to compete with the Amazon Kindle Oasis, which was upgraded last year. Its marketed as the "largest and lightest 8-inch display eReader".
The Kobo Forma features a "cutting-edge" 8-inch HD E Ink display which feels "lighter than air" with Mobius technology, and manages to weigh just 197 grams (3 grams more than the Kindle Oasis). It has an ergonomic smoothly curved design, which makes it comfortable for holding it for hours, and offers page-turn buttons as a tactile backup if you don't want to use the touchscreen. The company claims the device lasts "weeks" between charges.
Just like Amazon's Kindle Oasis, the Kobo Forma is waterproof, with IPX8 rating allowing it to spend up to 60 minutes in 2 meters of water without suffering any type of damage. The device is also able to withstand hard drops from "more than 2 meters". The e-reader can store as much as 6000 e-books with 8GB of internal storage.
Just like Amazon, Rakuten Kobo is highlighting an adjustable front light as a key selling point here. This comes with proprietary ComfortLight PRO features ensuring a comfortable digital reading experience throughout the day, including right before bed.
The Kobo Forma is clearly packed with features for its $280 asking price, but we are curious if customers will be willing to spend so much on such a niche category.
You will be able to pre-order the Korbo Forma if you are interested starting October 16, and you will be able to purchase the device online or in stores a week later. The device will be available across Canada, the US, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Japan, and Spain.
