Nokia Lumia 830 vs Nokia Lumia 1020

Nokia Lumia 830 vs Nokia Lumia 1020

The Nokia Lumia 1020 has a distinct design as a result of its massive 41MP PureView camera protruding from its back. Interestingly Nokia chose a similar design for its camera on the Nokia Lumia 830. But how does the new device compare to the veteran camera champ?

The Lumia 830 is pitched as an "affordable" flagship, and Nokia (and Microsoft) want to give attention to its 10MP Pureview camera with (OIS) Optical Image Stabilization.

Given that the Lumia 830 is is nearly two years younger than the 1020, and it reaps the benefits: a more powerful Snapdragon processor; integrated wireless charging; a larger display with smaller bezels; a removable battery; expandable memory; changeable back covers; a slimmer, more modern industrial design … the list goes on.

The smaller, leaner size of the Lumia 830 also makes it easier to pocket and hold. It even sits more comfortably on the table, while the camera on the Lumia 1020 doesn't allow you to place it comfortably.

But when you compare cameras,  the 41MP sensor on the Lumia 1020, which includes digital oversampling and xenon flash, utterly dominates the 10MP camera on its younger sibling. Also, the so called "affordable" Lumia 830 is actually $100 costlier than the Lumia 1020.

Interestingly the camera app launches much faster on the Lumia 830, thanks to its quad-core processor. It even snaps photos at a much faster speed, despite having only half the RAM of its older sibling. This is also because the older Snapdragon S4 processor has to handle a much larger 41MP camera, while the quad-core Snapdragon 400 has only a 10MP camera to deal with. The Lumia 830 camera will perform even better with the updated Lumia Camera version 5, which is unfortunately not available for the older Lumia 1020.

Still the Lumia 830 does improve on the Lumia 1020 in certain aspects. For example its minimum focal range is 10cm compared to the 15cm on the Lumia 1020, allowing the newer device to get much closer to subjects. Nokia has also greatly improved the software, removing any tinting which shows up on the Lumia 1020.

Interestingly, despite the jump from a dual-core to a quad-core processor, the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 830 perform almost in par, with the newer handset getting only a slight edge in day to day use. When it comes to games however, the four-core power does shine brighter.

At the end of the day, the Lumia 1020 may seem like the better choice with its 41MP PureView camera, Xenon Flash and digital zoom. However you should only pick it up if you are strictly looking for the better camera. The Lumia 830 on the other hand is always going to be the better purchase in every other way. In any case, we would recommend that users consider the more powerful Lumia 930 (Lumia Icon) or Lumia 1520 which offers even better cameras and hardware, and doesn't cost much more than the so called "affordable" flagship.

Leaked images show likely Lumia 1020 successor

Lumia 1020 successor

The Lumia 1020 is a unique looking device with an enormous 41-megapixel camera attached to its back. This photo-centric smartphone was released around 15 months ago, and despite rumors, there hasn't been any physical evidence of its successor - until now.

These recently discovered images show a device with similar dimensions of the Lumia 1020 sporting a combination of aluminum and polycarbonate materials. While its more than likely that the device is a clever fake, the general overall look indicates that it could be the Microsoft's rumored McLaren, which the company decided to canceled in July.

The McLaren was expected to succeed the Lumia 1020 and arrive sometime in December. It was also expected to feature a 3D Touch UI, with Xbox Kinect-like gestures for Windows Phone. Microsoft is continuing to look into 3D Touch for future smartphones, but decided to scrape McLaren's 2014 launch.

A closer look at the alleged prototype shows a few other differences from the Lumia 1020, mainly that an LED flash has replaced the Xenon and the physical hardware buttons on the bezel have been replaced with software buttons.

Get the Nokia Lumia 1020 with its 41MP camera for just $339

Get the Nokia Lumia 1020 with its 41MP camera for just $339

The Nokia Lumia 1020 for AT&T is now being sold at just $339 through the Microsoft Store and through Amazon. Despite being over a year old, the Lumia 1020 has the unique inclusion of a massive 41MP and has still to see a successor take its place.

Other hardware on the Lumia 1020 are quickly getting outdated. It features a 4.5 inch AMOLED display with a 768 x 1280 pixel resolution, 32GB of internal storage with no microSD expansion and a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor from Qualcomm.

Still this is a great deal for $339 and the camera is still one of the best in the market. However with a device over a year old, its important to keep in mind that a successor may very well be in the works... If you are still interested in investing in the Lumia 1020, just keep in mind that this is an AT&T device though it is contract free, so it would only likely work with AT&T and its MVNOs.

Lumia Cyan now available for some Developer Preview devices

Lumia Cyan now available for some Developer Preview devices

As you may know, those running the Windows Phone Developer Preview are not eligible for the Lumia Cyan update and have to revert back to the commercial version of Windows Phone 8.0 in order to receive Nokia's custom update. Fortunately it looks like Microsoft has rectified the issue for some devices.

The Windows Phone Support team has confirmed that the Nokia Lumia 1020 and Nokia Lumia 1520 on AT&T along with the Nokia Lumia 920 on T-Mobile Germany are now eligible to receive the Lumia Cyan update even if they are running the Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview.
Hello Folks,
As part of our effort to resolve the issue with updating to Cyan while on the Preview for Developer program, we have rolled out the Cyan update to three specific device types this afternoon.
Customers on the following devices and participating in the Preview for Developer program can now take the Cyan update:

  • Nokia Lumia 1020 – Branded on AT&T
  • Nokia Lumia 1520 – Branded on AT&T
  • Nokia Lumia 920 – Branded T-Mobile Germany
We continue to work on releasing the other devices to receive Cyan as part of the Preview for Developer program and hope to have more information in the future.
Thank you.
Microsoft's Greg Sullivan (@gregwardo) has also confirmed this on Twitter:
Its likely that Microsoft is making sure they have fixed the issue by issuing the update to a few devices to begin with. We can be sure that the other handsets will also be able to enjoy Lumia Cyan soon. If you own one of the above devices, please leave us a comment and let us know if you have received the Lumia Cyan update. You can also manually check for the update on your device by heading to Settings > Phone Update > Check for Updates.
