Microsoft India sent out a couple of interesting tweets today regarding the Lumia Denim update. Firstly, the company confirmed that Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 with Lumia Denim was rolling out to the Nokia Lumia 520 in India. In another tweet, Microsoft stated that it hopes to complete rolling out the Denim update for all Lumia handsets by the end of this month.
Unfortunately its not clear if Microsoft India, was only referring to pushing out the Denim update to handsets in their region, or if they are speaking on behalf of a global rollout. Previously Microsoft has stated that they hope to have completed pushing out the update by early 2015, and we have also seen signed of the second update to Windows Phone 8.1 lurking around. Hopefully we will have some clarification of this from Microsoft soon.
Lumia Denim is being pushed out to all Lumia handsets with Windows Phone 8.1, but it brings some cool new features to the Nokia Lumia 930, Nokia Lumia 1520 and Nokia Lumia 830. For example, owners of these flagship devices will will be able to use the "Hey Cortana" phrase to awaken the personal assistant from the handset's sleep state. It also adds a number of new features for the camera such as Rich Capture, a version of HDR for Microsoft.
In any case, the Lumia Denim update will have little effect on Windows Phone owners, who are undoubtedly waiting for Windows 10 for phones to arrive later this year.

Microsoft is now ready to release their next update to the Windows Phone platform - Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1. The update will also include Lumia Denim customization for Lumia smartphones. This update has already been rolled out to those using the Preview for Developers program, but the update is now ready for general consumers.

- Cortana – The most personal digital assistant on the market will now be available in the UK and China as a Beta. India, Canada and Australia will have access to Cortana as a public Alpha. For US residents, Cortana now includes an improved natural language, car kit integration via Bluetooth for contacts, snooze reminders and calendar improvements.
- Live folders – If you prefer to keep your apps or games organised, you can now put them into folders. Simply press, hold and drag an app over another to create a new folder on the Start screen. Each folder can be renamed by tapping on the text field above the open folder.
- Apps Corner – Create a customised Start screen, where only specific apps or games are accessible. This could be particularly useful in the workplace if you’re issuing Windows Phones to employees.
- SMS merge and forwarding – Select individual text messages to either delete them out of a messaging thread, or to copy and past them into a new message in order to forward them.
- Snooze Times – It’s now possible to customise the snooze time within the Alarm app.
- Consumer VPN – Maintain privacy and security when using data while connected to public Wi-Fi hotspots or even with your home Wi-Fi.
- Mobile Web Site improvements in IE – Connect and browse even faster with improved downloading speeds on mobile websites.
- Store Live Tile (US only) – The Store Live Tile displays featured apps and games that are the most popular in the Store, or most relevant for you.
Besides the GDR1 update, Lumia users will also get unique Lumia experiences courtesy of the Lumia Denim update, which follows Lumia Cyan. Which was rolled out with Windows Phone 8.1 for Lumia handsets. Lumia Denim brings the following new features and improvements to your Lumia device.

Microsoft's Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 reaches RTM, may arrive next week for developers
GDR1
•
GDR1,Updates,Windows Phone,Windows Phone 8.1

Microsoft's Windows Phone 8.1 update is now rolling out to Windows Phone 8 users. But Microsoft has been hard at work developing the next update to their mobile platform, which is dubbed GDR1. This update has reportedly already reached RTM, which means it has been released to manufacturers in order to be installed in a new generation of devices.
The GDR1 update could eventually be released as Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 to existing Windows Phones and is expected to being many enhancements for OEMs along with a few new features for end users. Before it reaches the general public, Microsoft could push out the update for those using Preview for Developers as early as next week.
The Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 is expected to bring the following new features and improvements:
- Expansion of Cortana to more regions - With Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, Cortana will be rolled out beyond the US, and will be made available to users in UK and China. Meanwhile Microsoft's digital voice assistant will also be released in alpha form to users in Canada, India and Australia.
- Folders on the Start Screen will allow users to grouple multiple Live tiles into a particular category (folder) for better organization of your tiles. You will be able to label and arrange the folders any way you choose. They are created by simply dragging one app on top of another and then naming the folder. This feature is already available on Windows 8/RT so it makes sense that Windows Phone users get to experience it too.
- Support for Interactive Cases will allow manufacturers like HTC to bring their Dot View case to Windows Phones. While the company has still not announced their rumored HTC One W8, the addition of this feature on Windows Phones could indicate a Windows Phone running HTC One M8 could be in our futures.
- Updates to Xbox Music will offer better performance while launching the app along with some returning features like background synchronization, swipe to advance and "quickplay".
- Ability to select multiple SMS messages for deleting or forwarding.
- Voice over LTE support.
- Support for extra resolutions and more devices.
- A medium Live Tile for the native Microsoft Store app which will refresh every 6 hours with the latest updates on content.
- An apps corner for business users, which will allow them to better control how apps can be accessed in certain environments
- Support for NTP (Network Time Protocol).
- Cortana can be added as phonebook entry to enable integration with car’s navigation system.
- Dual-SIM capability for both GSM+CDMA networks.
- “Auto scan for updates” entry can be hidden by OEMs.
- SD-card support no longer required for OEMs.
- OEMs can change the Start screen layout.

Microsoft is working on Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1, will likely arrive this year
GDR1
•
GDR1,Microsoft,Updates,Windows Phone,Windows Phone 8.1

Microsoft has still to rollout the Windows Phone 8.1 update to existing Windows Phone devices, but the company already seems to be working on the first update to their mobile operating system. Microsoft is reportedly in the latter stages of internally testing Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 (General Distribution Release).
Microsoft is reportedly in the "dogfooding" stage, which means the company's developers are currently using the update on their devices internally. While this doesn't necessarily mean the update is ready for public consumption, it does indicate that it is already usable on consumer devices.
Nothing is known about the features expected on the GDR1 update of Windows Phone 8.1. With Windows Phone 8, Microsoft released three GDR updates, which brought several new features and improvements to the platform. While GDR updates don't usually bring big changes, we can expect Microsoft to continue their trend to catch up with iOS and Android, and hopefully overtake the veteran platforms in features.
Once developers have completed internally testing the GDR1 update, it will hopefully be rolled out to the wider developer community. However it is important to note that the Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview was a major update, which required developers to enhance their apps for the release. This may not be the case with GDR1, so we wont be surprised if it skips a Developer Preview release.
