BBM for iOS (beta) updated (2.9.0.6) with message retraction and timed messages

BBM for iOS (beta) updated (2.9.0.6) with message retraction and timed messagesBBM for iOS beta has been updated to version 2.9.0.6 with several new features and improvements. After installing the update, users will be able to retract a message that has been sent hastily. This will be useful in case you have accidentally sent a message you wish you hadn't. With the new update, you can rescind the message as long as it wasn't already read. The message can be then edited (to replace the word "hate" with "love") and re-sent.

BBM for BlackBerry 10 (beta) updated with custom PIN and no ad options

In addition to the BBM for iOS beta update, BlackBerry is also releasing an updated beta version of BBM for BlackBerry 10, which brings the app in line on both platforms. The changelog on both releases are nearly identical, with BlackBerry 10 users now having to option to create a custom PIN, remove ads and have a special badge on their profile picture in BBM.

The update is live right now in the BlackBerry Beta Zone, though it does appear to be a limited beta so you might have to wait this one out until it actually goes official. Keep in mind that updating will wipe all your current BBM chats.

BBM is BlackBerry's proprietary messaging app and it is now available across Android, iOS and Windows Phone along with the company's own BlackBerry OS. BlackBerry hopes that by offering their popular messaging solution across their competitors platforms, they will get the world to once again take notice of their own platform and devices.

Still certain BBM features have still not made their way across iOS and Android, including BBM Video, which allows BBM members to conduct a video chat with another member. BBM Video is highly regarded on BlackBerry OS, so it ideally would make sense for BlackBerry to try and coax customers to use this service on competing platforms rather than allow them to get comfortable with what they have.

[Windows Phone app] BBM no longer in 'beta'

BBM for Windows PhoneBBM for Windows Phone has been and has been released as a stable version on the store, dropping the 'beta' from its title. BlackBerry opened their proprietary messaging service BBM to Android, iOS and Windows Phone in order to raise the value of the platform.

You can download the latest version of BBM directly on your device through the Windows Phone Store or by using the following link:

BBM for Windows Phone version 1.0.1 also brings bug fixes and other performance improvements. The updated app also loads faster and an issue where the app would display in English even though the device was set for Spanish has been fixed.

BBM for Windows Phone has been built in the native Tile based user interface on Windows Phones. It offers users the ability to pin specific chats to their Start Screens for quick acces.

Unfortunately it is still in a private beta state, so you will require an invitation in order to use the app. However given that it is in beta, it likely won't be long before the public will get to enjoy BBM on their Windows Phones.

Password. That’s all you need to get started on BBM! For those of you already on BBM today, this change won't impact you at all.

  • Easier Friending
The update also improves how you add new BBM contacts through email. Today, it’s a somewhat cumbersome and complicated process. This new release will simplify the process so that when you receive a BBM invite by email - all you have to do is click the link and presto, you’re BBM contacts. No need to send a PIN invite back.
  • New Emoticons & more
You’ll also find 16 new BBM emoticons in this release - from a hotdog, and maracas, to a hacker and a pair of hot lips. What you know today has been renamed as the ‘Updates’ tab…‘Feeds’ has been renamed to better represent what you find there – the latest statuses and profile photos from your BBM contacts and the newest posts from the BBM Channels you follow.

BlackBerry Messenger for Android and iOS coming this weekend

Following today's announcement of the BlackBerry Z30, the Canadian company has also announced that BlackBerry Messenger for Android and iOS will be launching later this week. The BBM for Android app is expected to be available starting at 7:00 a.m. Eastern on Sept. 21, while BBM for iPhone will hit the App Store at 12:01 a.m. local time on Sept. 22.

BlackBerry notes that BBM for Android will require  or higher, while BBM for iPhone will be available to users on iOS 6 and iOS 7.

BBM for Android and BBM for iOS will feature many of the same features available on BBM on BlackBerry. These include basic chat, BBM Groups multi-person chats, delivery and read receipts, photo sharing and a unique PIN that'll be assigned to each user. BlackBerry promises that it's planning to add features like BBM Voice and BBM Video calling as well as BBM Channel communities in the future.

The BBM Messenger has been one of the BlackBerry platforms greatest appeals allowing its users a quick, free and reliable way to keep in touch with their friends without having to use text messaging. While there are many alternative messaging services available today, BBM has had a strong fanbase who solely rely on the service for their communication.

Now with many past BlackBerry fans having switched to new platforms, it will be interesting to see if the introduction of the messenger on their new platforms will bring back their BBM pride. We are looking forward to see how many users download BBM for Android and iOS, but we are more interested to see how many of them continue to use the service on their devices.

BBM for Android APK leaks, though not for everyone

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is headed to both iOS and Android platforms. The company announced their plans to port their messaging platform back in May and have been reportedly testing the service on both iOS and Android. Recent rumors have suggested that BlackBerry could be relaunching BBM as a cross-platform messaging solution within the next few days, with the scheduled media event expected to be used as a platform for the launch.

However it looks like APK file for the Android platform has prematurely leaked out to the public.

Unfortunately the leaked APK comes with a catch. Users who intend to get involved with the new BBM will first of all have to have their BlackBerry IDs authenticated with BlackBerry’s servers before the product will work. Unless you are an official beta tester of this port, then it’s unlikely that your ID will be able to sign into the leaked app.

So even though you get to enjoy the esthetically pleasing BBM Messenger for Android, it serves as nothing more than a visual example until the service is available to the public after its launch. If you are interested in checking it out or already have a valid BBM account you can download the APK below or by following the source link below.

We are very curious to see what the future holds for BlackBerry and is their decision to offer BBM as a cross platform messaging solution has the desired results. If the September 18th launch becomes a relaity, we wont have long to find out.
