HTC 8X to receive Windows Phone 8.1 next month
HTC has sent out a tweet revealing that the HTC Windows Phone 8X will be receiving the Windows Phone 8.1 update starting late next month. This is the latest version of Windows Phone which comes pre-installed on the recently announced HTC One M8 for Windows.
With Windows Phone 8.1 users will get access to features like the Action Center for notifications, the Swype-style Word Flow keyboard, the voice activated personal assistant Cortana and more. A number of Nokia Lumia models have already been updated to Windows Phone 8.1.

Interestingly, last month Microsoft halted the Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview for both the HTC 8X and HTC 8S, due to the lack of drivers required for the update. HTC needs to send out the drivers for both models, and will do so with the official consumer update.
So now we know to expect the HTC 8X to receive the update in late October, which should make owners of the phone excited to know that Cortana is coming soon. At this moment, there is no indication on when the HTC 8S will receive the Windows Phone 8.1 update.

Microsoft halts Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 Developer Preview for HTC devices
Microsoft has stopped seeding out the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 Developer Preview for the HTC Windows Phone 8X and the HTC Windows Phone 8S. The update is in beta, and while it is really available only for those registered with Microsoft as a developer, non-developers can get it without paying the $19 developer fee, from the Windows Phone App Studio website.
According to Microsoft, they have chosen to "pause" the update, as HTC had not provided the drivers required for the update to be installed on their devices.
"There are a small set of devices for which we aren't offering the latest build of the Developer Preview program due to an identified problem that requires mobile operator or OEM driver updates. These will be offered when the official update for your phone is available." - Microsoft
We understand that the HTC Windows Phone 8X and HTC Windows Phone 8S do not represent a large percentage of the Windows Phone market. The HTC 8X had a 4.7% slice of the U.S. Windows Phone pie on July 24th, according to AdDuplex. But its disappointing that developers of the two models should be denied the opportunity to install the latest OS build..

The HTC 8X was launched as a signature Windows Phone 8 device, but has since been overshadowed by several offerings from Nokia. By the time Windows Phone 8.1 starts to hit hardware through updates, the 8X will be nearly two years old. That shouldn't impact the OS at all as 8.1 is optimized to run even on the Lumia 520.

As strong partners of Microsoft, we're working with Microsoft on the Blue update on Windows Phone 8X and will continue to take new products into consideration. Nothing concrete right now, but who knows!”Of course there is no word about the budget friendly HTC 8S or the HTC 8XT on Sprint. At least the HTC 8X will be happy to know that HTC plans on bringing Windows Phone 8.1 (Blue) to users later this year.

Windows Phone 8 Update 3 changelog (OS build 10501, 10512)
There is no word on when other Windows Phone 8 devices are expected to receive the GDR3 update, but we know that Nokia plans to have the update ready by early next year alongside their own Lumia Black update.

HTC 8X for Verizon starts receiving WP8 GDR3 update
After just receiving the Windows Phone GDR2 update, Verizon has already started pushing out the Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update for their HTC 8X. The update brings several new features and improvements to the device. You can find the change-log after the break.

The Windows Phone 8 GDR2 software update has reportedly started reolling out to HTC 8X devices on the AT&T network starting Thursday. The update which is being offered over-the-air (OTA) is around 207MB in size and brings the 8.0.10327.77 software version.
The GDR2 update brings support for LTE bands 2 and 5 along with enabling the FM radio on your Windows Phone 8 device. You will have to plugin your earphones in order to make use of the FM radio. You
You also get access to the Data Sense application which keeps track of your monthly data usage. You can monitor how many days remain on your billing cycle and even find out which apps are consuming the most of your monthly allowance.
Other new features include Sync support for Google Contacts (CardDav) and Google Calendar (CalDav) along with additional enhancements to Bluetooth, music and battery performance.
AT&T refers to the GDR2 update as a staggered at the begining which means that it maybe a few days before it reaches out to all devices. If you have set updates to download automatically you should receive a notification once the update is ready to be installed on your device. Beats Audio which is integrated with HTC Windows Phone 8 devices promises to "provide an exceptional audio experience on your phone".
Attentive Phone allows your device to respond to intelligent commands based on its environment. For example, Pocket Mode uses the proximity sensor to determine if the device is in your pocket, and if so raises the ringer volume so you can hear it. If you place your device face down during a call, speakerphone is automatically switched on. You can also place the phone face down during a meeting and your ringer will be muted. If you set the phone to ring loudly when you are away from it, it will lower the ringing automatically when you pick it up.
Regulatory shows regulatory information for your model.
It may not be great features similar to what Nokia is offering on their Windows Phones, but it is good to know that HTC hasn't totally forgotten their Windows Phones. I would honestly rather see more HTC apps adopt the Windows Phone 'Modern UI' design in these updates as they seem to be ported over from their Android versions.

HTC has announced that they are ready to released updates for their Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S handsets. The update brings new builds for their system apps like Beats Audio which will be updated to version 3.4 to version 3.5, Attentive Phone which will be updated to version 2.5 and Regulatory which will be updated to version 1.3

The HTC Windows Phone 8X for T-Mobile is now receiving its first Windows Phone update, which is known as “Portico”. If you own of these handsets you can download the update on your device right now. The update is being offered OTA (over-the-air) and addresses several known issues.You can check for the update on your HTC 8X by heading over to Settings > Phone Update. It will update your device to software version 1532.20.20004.531 from 1532.20.10006.531 and the OS version will be updated to 8.0.10211.204 from 8.09903.10.
According to the change-log for the Portico update, there are improvements to messaging, text-replies to reject calls, web-browsing improvements and better Wi-Fi connectivity. The update is also expected to fix the random rebooting issue and brings the ability to maintain the Wi-Fi connection while the device is in sleep mode.
There is now news when the update will be made available for the Nokia Lumia 810, which is the other Windows Phone 8 devices on T-Mobile’s network. Nor is there an indication on when the update will be made available to Windows Phone 8 devices on other networks.

HTC 8X receives a Windows Phone 8 software update
The HTC Windows Phone 8X is receiving its first over-the-air software update for Windows Phone 8, which upgrades the software version from 9905 to 10211. The update resolves the random reboot issue and brings a tweak to Wi-Fi connectivity along with other new features and improvements. The HTC 8X looks to be the first to receive this update, which is probably one of the advantages of being a signature Windows Phone device.The Wi-Fi connectivity tweak allows users to have the Wi-Fi connection turned on constantly. Previous versions of Windows Phone would turn off the Wi-Fi connection in an attempt to prolong battery life. The issue with that was that you could lose notifications from apps like WhatsApp unless you have your data connection running while the screen remained locked. We hope this feature will make its way to Windows Phone 7.8 devices as well.
The update also brings several text messaging features, including the option to reject a call with a text. You also get several presets and two slots for your own custom text responses. The update also allows the text messaging app to save draft texts and quickly select all messages for quick and easy deleting.
At this point there is no news on when the update will reach other Windows Phone 8 devices, but we will keep you informed as soon as we find out.

The first app you will notice is HTC app which offers the full-width HTC clock on the homescreen, which is somewhat similar to what we see on the Sense UI on Android devices. You can scale the tile down to three sizes if you wish, were the middle size resembles what we have seen on Windows Phone 7 and a smaller tile with just the HTC logo (which doesn’t really offer much). The full size title also offers the weather and textual location of where you are.
The second app that HTC offers is the HTC Connection Setup which helps you set up all your Internet APNs, proxies and login details from an online database of pre defined network providers and their various configurations. It uses your SIM ID to automatically identify your network and settings.

The HTC Windows Phone 8X features a 4.3 inch touch display, 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, an 8 megapixel camera capable of 1080p HD video capture, the HTC ImageSense technology, a secondary HD camera for video calls, Beats audio and is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.The device is available in the U.S. through AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile and costs $99 with a two-year contract.
The HTC 8X runs Windows Phone 8 but also includes exclusive HTC software which improves the experience in this ‘Signature’ Windows Phone device.
The first app you will notice is HTC app which offers the full-width HTC clock on the homescreen, which is somewhat similar to what we see on the Sense UI on Android devices. You can scale the tile down to three sizes if you wish, were the middle size resembles what we have seen on Windows Phone 7 and a smaller tile with just the HTC logo (which doesn’t really offer much). The full size title also offers the weather and textual location of where you are.Clicking the tile opens the HTC app which has three views. Firs you have the weather screen, which gives you weather in your current location along with other cities you have selected. The second screen shows the stocks which allows you to pin stock tickers on your homescreen and the News feed which ahs predefined news stories.
Another great feature HTC offers through their app is the ability to customize your device lockscreen. The app does this by presenting location specific weather information directly on your lock screen along with the current temperature and estimated highs and lows.

Its not likely that this app will be used much, but if you are a user who travels a lot and needs to switch your SIM often on your device, we are sure that you will use this app quite often.
The third app is the HTC Flashlight for Windows Phone, which allows you to use your device LED flash as a flashlight. You can switch between three levels of brightness and you have options to flash the light automatically or blink SOS if you are in an emergency situation.
The fourth app is the HTC Converter. This app unfortunately hasn’t been updated to match Windows Phone Design language and doesn’t feel at home on the Windows Phone platform. In fact it looks more like an iOS application with its dials which you use to swap between the measures you want to convert. The app works like it should, but its disappointing that HTC chose not to make a Windows Phone esq app here.
Finally we have the HTC Photo Enhancer which allow your to tweak the photos you have captured on your device before you share it online. The app has several filters which can be used to achieve this. The app can be opened directly form the Windows Phone ‘Photos’ app and you can select or scroll through the existing filters. Once you find a filter you like, the newly edited image will be saved separately, preserving the original.
Unfortunately that’s all the app has to offer. There are no tools to crop, resize or edit your images, nor can you rework any part of the image. HTC has also left out any direct method to share the edited photos on your social networks from within the app.
So it doesn’t seem like HTC has put much time or effort into their Windows Phone app catalogue which is lackluster compared to the comprehensive offerings on the Lumia Windows Phones. Despite being tagged a Signature Windows Phone, HTC apps are no reason to select this device and you should only choose the HTC Windows Phone 8X if you prefer its hardware.

Users who have been waiting for a chance to get their hands on Windows Phone 8 devices on the Verizon network can now get a taste of what Microsoft’s newest mobile operating system has to offer.
The Nokia Lumia 822 features features a 4.3 inch WVGA AMOLED touch display, an 8 megapixel camera, 16 GB of storage which can be expanded through microSD, a secondary camera for video calls, and is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM. The device costs $99.99 with a two-year contract and is available in black or white.
You can also get the device for $49.99 if you head over to a Best Buy retail store near you. However keep in mind that this reduced price is not available on the Best Buy website, which matches Verizon’s offer.
