Toshiba Encore Mini officially announced at an affordable price with Windows 8.1

Toshiba Encore Mini officially announced at an affordable price with Windows 8.1

The Toshiba Encore Mini was officially announced today as the cheapest tablet to date to run Windows 8.1. The slate was developed following a "close" collaboration with Microsoft, and it’s obviously the Redmond giant’s attempt to compete with the army of ultra-affordable Android tablets available all around the world.

The tablet has been priced at just $199 and can be purchased through Toshiba's online store and through major retailers. This price is possible as the tablet runs a special version of Windows called, "Windows 8.1 with Bing" which is given to OEMs at an affordable cost. For the end user, you still get a full Windows experience which includes a 1-year subscription to Office 365 Personal and 1 TB (one terabyte) of OneDrive storage space

The Encore Mini features a 7 inch display with a 1024 by 600 pixel resolution, 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, a 2 MP rear camera, a VGA front-facing camera “with microphone” and a 1.83 GHz Intel Atom Z3735G processor with 1GB of RAM. Currently only the white version of the tablet is available, with no word on other color availability.

Would you consider purchasing a Windows tablet for $119 or would you rather purchase an Android tablet instead? Remember that since this runs Windows 8.1, you can run any Windows desktop or Modern app.

Toshiba introduces affordable Encore 2 Windows tablets, starting at $199

One of the biggest obstacles for Windows tablets to grow in popularity is their price. Luckily Microsoft plans to change this by introducing a special version of Windows to its manufacturers which will in turn allow them to drastically drop the prices of their tablets. Toshiba is one of the first companies to take advantage of this offer with their brand new Encore 2 tablets, which run full Windows 8.1 and start at just $ 199

The base model features an 8 inch display with a 1280 by 800 pixel resolution, 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, a 5MP rear camera, a 1.2MP front facing camera and a quad-core Intel Atom processor with 1GB of RAM. There is a larger 10.1 inch model with nearly identical specs, which is priced at $269. Both tablets boast around 10 hours of battery life, which is decent for entry level tablets.

To achieve these low prices, the Toshiba Encore tablets run a special version of Windows known as Windows 8.1 with Bing. To the consumer, Windows 8.1 With Bing isn't much different from Windows 8.1. In a blog post, Microsoft claims Bing will be the default search engine for Internet Explorer on those devices, but that's true of any Windows tablet. The OS is installed by the OEM; consumers won't be able to buy or download Windows 8.1 With Bing directly.

More importantly, the tablets include a one-year subscription to Office 365. Previously bundling Office with Windows was an exclusive to Windows RT devices, and we are interested to see what the future holds for Windows RT with this move.

The Toshiba Encore tablets are just the first of many upcoming tablets to feature Windows with Bing. We expect several more manufacturers to announce their tablets over the next couple of weeks leading up to the big Computex trade show, which is expected to begin on June 3.

Download Windows USB Drivers for Samsung, HTC, ASUS, Sony, LG and other Android devices

Download Windows USB DriversAndroid is a derivative of Linux, and therefore natively works with any Linux-based system without requiring extra configurations. This also includes Mac OS X which is also a variant of Linux. However, for Windows – the most widely used PC operating system – things are little different. In Microsoft’s operating environment, any hardware component that you have attached to your system, requires proper drivers to be configured, whether it’s an internal piece of hardware or a peripheral. This becomes a problem for Android users.

Generally when your Android device is connected to your Windows computer, Windows Update will find and serve a generic USB driver from reputable OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). Then these Android devices can be connected to through USB (mass) storage mode. There can be other cases where the manufacturer will release an accompanying PC Suite or software suite for your Android device, with the proper drivers.

However users generally face issue when they place their Android devices in USB debugging mode, an essential requirement for application development in Windows, and for modding and customization of your phone or tablet. It also provides a bridge for ADB connection between the droid and the computer. In these scenarios, the automated solutions mentioned above might not always work, and for that reason, most OEMs provide configurable driver packages for Windows based setups, so that you can get your device connected and communicating with the PC in an easy manner.

Unfortunately locating these Android drivers can be a tedious process as they are scattered all over the internet. Fortunately we have a list of Android USB drivers for Windows download links for several popular OEMs (ADB and Fastboot), so finding your drives can be much easier in future

Generic Android Drivers for Windows

Nexus Drivers

Note that if you have a Nexus device, you will need to use the Google USB driver, and not the one from the manufacturer of the device.

Android Flagship Drivers

The following list of drivers are for the latest flagship Android smartphones. You can use the above mentioned drivers unless you own one of the following flagship smartphones

Apart from the above mentioned USB drivers, you can grab the fastboot drivers from the ever-popular XDA-Developers community. Need something more? Found a link that we've got wrong? Leave a comment below and help this list get better

Toshiba announces dual 5MP camera module with stereo-3D photos and digital focus

Toshibas has announced a dual 5MP camera, along with a companion chip for smartphones and tablets. The new product is touted to be quite unique, and it'll incorporate twin 0.25-inch optical format 5-megapixel CMOS camera module, capable of simultaneously recording both image and depth data.According to the press release, sampling availability starts on January 31st 2014

The accompanying companion chip will use the recorded depth data and then apply it to objects in the image, in order to produce something of a stereo-3D shot. Furthermore, functionality such as digital focus tweaking and extracting or erasing entire objects from the image has also been thrown into the mix, making the “TCM9518MD” twin camera unit quite interesting.

the twin 5-megapixel cameras will generate a 13-megapixel image, through upscaling. Toshiba claims this as advantageous, as this allows for the camera to be made thinner than currently available 13-megapixel solutions on the market. This, in turn, should allow for slimmer smartphones, though Toshiba hasn't actually given a particular timeframe as to when we can expect to see the new module enter mass production.

You can check out the full specifications of the new unit here.

Upcoming Windows 8.1 tablets with Intel's Bay Trail processors

Alongside the release of Windows 8.1 next week, there will also be a new lineup of tablets powered by Intel's latest Atom chip code-named Bay Trail. These tablets which will be priced between $299 and $350, include the Dell Venue 8 Pro, Toshiba Encore, and the Asus Transformer Book T100. More models are expected to ship in the coming months.

These tablets are mainly aimed at consumers looking to browse the web and consume media, much like the iPad, and offer more than eight hours of battery life with screen sizes starting at 8 inches. Manufacturers will include accessories with these tablets allowing them to be transformed into laptops for various productivity tasks. Since they are full Windows tablets, they will be able to run both legacy Windows desktop applications and modern Windows 8 applications.

These tablets are thinner and lighter than last generation Windows 8 tablets, thanks to the advancements on Intel's processor architecture. You could always consider the Microsoft Surface 2, if you are willing to put up with the lack of legacy desktop app support in the ARM based Windows RT. ARM processor is expected to be comparable on battery life and performance to Bay Trail.

The initial batch of Bay Trail tablets will have processors with up to four cores and 32-bit versions of Windows 8.1. Software issues have prevented the immediate release of 64-bit Windows 8.1 Bay Trail tablets, but they should come early next year.

Toshiba Encore

The Toshiba Encore was the first tablet to be announced with Windows 8.1 and Bay Trail. The tablet has an 8-inch screen, weighs about 17 ounces and is 0.4 inches thick. The screen displays images at a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, and the company says the tablet is good for Skype videoconferencing with features that include dual-array microphones.

Toshiba hasn't shared the battery life yet, but Intel claims Bay Trail tablets will offer more than eight hours of run time and weeks of standby.

The Encore has an 8-megapixel back camera and a 2-megapixel front camera. Other features include Micro USB 2.0, Micro HDMI, and MicroSD slots. The tablet also comes with Office Home and Student 2013.

Encore starts at $329.99 with 32GB of storage, though the Windows OS will take up a large chunk of the storage. It will be available in November through Toshiba’s website and retail stores.

Dell Venue 8 Pro

The Dell Venue 8 Pro features an 8 inch display with a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, is 0.35 inches thick and weighs about 14 ounces according to the company.

The tablet starts at $299.99 with 32GB of storage, and includes a 1.2-megapixel front camera and 5-megapixel back camera, and a Micro USB 2.0 and MicroSD slots.

The Venue 8 Pro  has a unique feature with LTE connectivity in the U.S. and 3G in other countries. Dell expects the tablet to start shipping in November, and will sell optional keyboard, case and stylus accessories for the device.

Asus Transformer Book T100

The Asus Transformer Book T100 features a larger 10.1 inch display compared to the other Bay Trail tablets, and is heavier at a little more than 19 ounces.

Asus claims the tablet offers 11 hours of battery life, which should beat the 8-inch rivals with smaller batteries.

The T100 will be sold as a tablet, but come with a detachable keyboard for laptop functionality. As a laptop, the T100 weighs just under 2.5 pounds. The T100 is priced at $349 with 32GB of storage, and $399 for 64GB of storage.

The screen displays images at a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, and the other features include MicroSD card and Micro USB 2.0 ports. The bundled keyboard has a USB 3.0 port.

If you are interested in the Asus Transformer Book T100, you can purchase it using the following link through Amazon. The tablet will start shipping on October 18.

Hp Omni 10

Last but not least we have the HP Omni, which has a 10.1 inch display and a 1920 by 1200 pixel resolution. This makes the Omni 10 the best screen among Bay Trail tablets so far.

HP is claiming a nine-hour battery life, and the company is offering accessories such as a charging dock and Bluetooth keyboard with the device. It will become available in November, and the company has not announced prices. But with the high-resolution screen, you should expect it to be priced above $400.

Toshiba Encore unveiled with 8 inch display priced at $330

The Toshiba Encore is a Windows 8.1 tablet which features an 8 inch IPS display with a 1280 by 800 pixel resolution. You also get 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded through the microSD slot and you have an 8 megapixel camera on the rear of the device to capture your photos with a front camera for video calls. The Encore is powered by an Intel (Bay Trail) Atom chipset, which works well with Windows 8 and offers a reasonably long battery life.

Toshiba has used a light and durable polycarbonate material to build the Encore, giving it a nice feel to hold and use. A micro HDMI port has been included to allo you to stream your device content to your TV.

Microsoft is said to have provided input into the construction of the device which hopes to be popular with its $330 pricing. It additionally has dual-microphones to enhance your Skype experience and you have Office Home & Student 2013, Xbox SmartGlass app, Norton Anti-Theft and Xbox Music with a free streaming pass are among the apps pre-loaded for added value.
