After a full week with My Hero Academia: United Survival, I ended up enjoying it more than I expected. I eventually built a team strong enough to push through two chapters, learned when Auto Play was useful, and took manual control when bosses exposed how unreliable Auto could be.

The problem is that getting there felt far more confusing than it needed to. United Survival gives free players a surprising amount of upgrade material, but it throws too many progression systems at you at once and rarely explains which one matters next. I eventually figured it out by experimenting with Team upgrades, Trust, character levels, equipment, Collections and rank-ups. The game should have taught me that progression path instead of waiting for me to stumble into it.

First Impressions

My first impression of United Survival wasn't particularly strong. The opening battles required little more than moving my character around the screen while attacks happened automatically. Periodically, I was presented with several power-ups of different star levels and asked to choose one, but the game did very little to explain how those choices fit into the larger combat system.

There was dialogue explaining some of the mechanics, but the opening throws information at me quickly enough that I ended up skipping through some of it. That became a recurring problem outside combat as well. The Home screen quickly filled with buttons, notification markers, currencies, missions and menus, with very little indication of what actually deserved my attention.

The bright yellow, black and white presentation fits My Hero Academia, but it also makes an already crowded interface harder to read. After unlocking the Home, Team and Enlist screens, I found myself deliberately ignoring most of the available buttons because the game wasn't giving me a reason to interact with them.

Gameplay

Combat is built around movement, automatic attacks and regular power-up selections. Auto mode can move the character and choose those power-ups for you, so routine stages can become almost completely hands-off. The Assist ability still requires manual input, but for a while I was mostly watching the game clear stages for me.

That changed once the difficulty increased. I hit stages where Auto Play repeatedly got the team killed, and manual control made a real difference. I could avoid damage, keep the team alive longer and make better decisions during boss fights. I eventually cleared a boss manually after Auto had failed.

That gave the combat more purpose, but it also exposed the trade-off. Manual play is more effective, yet the battles are long enough that constantly moving, dodging and stopping for power-up selections can become tedious. Auto is the more convenient way to play, even when it isn't the smarter one.

Characters & Team Building

I started with a basic three-character team and initially relied on Auto Set to choose what the game considered strongest. As I progressed, Enlist gave me several higher-rarity pulls, including SR versions of Katsuki Bakugo and Tomura Shigaraki. Those pulls looked like the obvious answer to my progression problem because the game puts so much emphasis on rarity.

But simply having three SR characters did not suddenly solve the problem. One of my early all-SR teams was only around 47K strength, and Auto Set actually produced a mixed-rarity team around 58K. Later I built a three-SR team around 63K. Character rarity mattered, but it was only one part of the progression system.

Progression & The Grind

This is where my opinion changed the most. Early in the week, I was stuck far below a stage recommendation of roughly 67K. I kept using the upgrades I understood, still died, and assumed the game was pushing me toward stronger characters.

The breakthrough came when I stopped treating progression as one system. I started ranking up the characters I was actually using, spending coins and upgrade materials, improving equipment and Collections, and using Trust progression to unlock additional character upgrades. I had accumulated plenty of blue upgrade resources, but some of them were unavailable to Todoroki until I raised the relevant Trust level.

Once I started combining those systems, the numbers moved quickly. Hawks went from Level 11 toward Level 19, Todoroki gained access to additional upgrades, equipment and Collections increased, and the same general core team eventually reached more than 105K strength.

The important part is that I did not need to buy my way through that wall. The game had already given me many of the resources I needed. I just didn't understand where they belonged. That is both encouraging for free players and a criticism of the onboarding. A progression system this layered needs to tell a struggling player what to improve next instead of presenting six different upgrade paths and hoping one of them gets clicked.

Monetization

United Survival constantly keeps Enlist currencies, banners and store prompts within reach, and after clearing a major stage I was offered a limited "Surprise Sale" for 300 premium currency. That is standard territory for a gacha game, but the timing matters.

My concern is less that spending exists and more that the game makes it easy to think spending is the solution. When I was underpowered, recruiting stronger characters seemed like the obvious move because I did not yet understand how much unused progression material I already had. A player who hits the same wall could reasonably start buying or pulling for characters before realizing that Trust, rank-ups, levels, equipment and Collections may do more for the team they already own.

During this review I stayed free-to-play. The free tickets and resources gave me multiple SR characters and enough upgrade material to progress through two chapters. That is a better free-player outcome than my first few days suggested.

The Daily Routine

For most of the week, my routine was simple: log in, collect whatever the game had made available, spend resources on the current team, then see how far Auto Play could take me. The free daily Continue gave me another attempt when the team was underpowered, so I used that as a natural stopping point.

By the end of the week, the routine became more deliberate. Instead of automatically chasing a new character whenever I got stuck, I checked the team itself first: character level, rank-ups, equipment, Collections and Trust. That was the rhythm the game should have established from the beginning.

UI and Onboarding

The game has five main navigation areas: Agency, Team, Home, Trust and Enlist. Each one adds more systems, currencies and notification markers. The game often explains what an individual feature does when it unlocks, but it does not do a good job of establishing hierarchy.

That became the central frustration of the review. I knew my team was weak, but the game gave me too many ways to make it stronger at once. I could level characters, train them, rank them up, improve Trust, equip items, upgrade equipment, improve Collections, change the team or recruit new characters. What I needed was a progression recommendation based on why I had just lost.

Instead, I learned by experimentation. That works eventually, but it makes the early game feel more complicated than it actually is. Once I understood the relationship between the systems, progression became much easier.

Updates & Events

During this review, events and banners were constantly visible around the main game, but they were not the deciding factor in whether I could progress. The more important discovery was that ordinary free progression resources were already enough to strengthen my core team substantially.

How It Compares

United Survival sits in familiar mobile gacha territory: character recruitment, layered progression, daily resources, event banners and enough automation to turn routine stages into background activity. What stands out less is the structure itself and more how quickly it introduces all of those systems.

I would rather see progression arrive in clearer stages. Teach me character leveling first, make me use it, then introduce rank-ups, equipment, Trust and Collections as the difficulty demands them. United Survival instead gives me several answers before I understand the question.

Does It Hold Up?

At the four-day mark, I was close to giving up. I was badly underpowered, Auto Play kept failing, and manually playing long stages did not feel rewarding enough to justify the extra effort. The last few days changed that.

Once I found the progression rhythm, the game became easier to understand and I moved through more content without spending money. Bosses also gave manual control a reason to exist. I still don't think the core combat is strong enough to carry the game on its own, but I ended the week in a much better place than I was halfway through it.

That does not erase the onboarding problem. If a game gives me enough free resources to succeed but makes me think I need to recruit my way out of every wall, the progression design is working against the player. United Survival became more enjoyable after I figured it out. I just wish the game had been the thing that taught me.

My Hero Academia: United Survival finished the week stronger than it started. I went from watching Auto Play fail against a progression wall to building a 100K-plus team, manually beating bosses and clearing more than two chapters without paying.

I can recommend giving it a try if you're a My Hero Academia fan and don't mind learning a busy mobile progression system. I would not recommend spending money just because the first major wall makes your current roster look weak. Check the progression systems you already have first. In my case, the resources were there. The instructions were not.

Living Review. August 2026: I subscribed to Sunbird as a paying customer and documented what happened as it happened. Three weeks later, the result is clear: I never reached the part where I could actually use it.
An email from Sunbird made me pause. Months earlier, when iMessage support was first announced, I tried the service's free trial. I wanted to know whether Android users had finally found a way into Apple's messaging world. I never made it through setup. The iMessage connection kept getting stuck, and I eventually deleted the app and moved on. But I could not honestly answer a question Android users have asked for years. Is iMessage on Android actually worth paying for? So instead of unsubscribing from another marketing email, I subscribed to Sunbird. What happened next became the story.

Week 1: The Journey Begins

Day 1: Becoming a Sunbird Customer

The first surprise came before I even subscribed. I was using a Pixel 10 Pro XL. I could not complete the purchase while connected to Wi-Fi. I tried a few times, turned Wi-Fi off, and switched to cellular data. The purchase completed immediately. I do not know whether that was my network, Google Play, or Sunbird. I only know it was the first thing that happened when I tried to become a paying customer. It is a small detail, but first impressions are usually made of small details. Round two with iMessage While preparing to try again, I learned something that may explain why my first attempt months ago went nowhere. Back then, I had created a brand-new Apple ID specifically for testing. This time, I used my existing Apple account instead. I entered my Apple ID and password. The result does not explain what happens during a normal connection attempt, but it shows that Sunbird can recognise credentials that are not accepted. The second attempt I started another sign-in attempt at around 12:12 PM. This time the early progress was quicker: 76% at 12:21 PM, 94% at 12:34 PM, 99% at 12:45 PM. That was encouraging for a moment. But by 1:18 PM, after more than an hour in total and over 30 minutes at 99%, the attempt ended without connecting. A faster start, the same result. A clearer answer from support Later that day, Sunbird gave me a more definite answer. After reviewing my account, support said its message engine could not connect with my existing Apple Account because it falls into a "rare connection edge case" the service does not yet support. The recommended workaround was to clear Sunbird's cache and data, restart the phone, then try again with a different Apple Account, either another existing account or a new one.

But the bigger question is not about a stalled progress bar. Sunbird's own documentation says you do not need an Apple device. That makes sense for the Android user who simply wants blue bubbles. Creating a separate Apple Account may feel straightforward in that situation. But what about somebody who already owns an iPhone and wants to try Android without walking away from the Apple identity their friends and family already know?

Can a service like this really become a bridge between Apple and Android without asking people to split their digital identity in two?

That question is what Week 2 is actually about.

Week 2: Living With the Workaround

Day 1: The Workaround Starts With Another Barrier

Week 2 was meant to test Sunbird's official workaround. Support had confirmed my existing Apple Account falls into a connection case the service does not yet support, and recommended trying again with a different Apple Account. Because Sunbird says no Apple device is required, I began the process directly on my Android phone. I created a new account in Brave on Android and completed Apple's email verification. But at the final phone-verification stage, Apple stopped the process with the message: "Account cannot be created at this time." That is not a Sunbird failure in itself. It may be an Apple security or rate-limit issue. But it is still part of the practical experience of following Sunbird's recommended workaround. Before I could test whether a new Apple Account would solve the iMessage connection problem, creating that replacement identity became another obstacle.

Day 2: A Different Browser and Network, the Same Result

I tried again using Chrome rather than Brave and cellular data rather than Wi-Fi. I also tried the phone number assigned to my Android phone, and a secondary VoIP number. Apple again stopped the process during phone verification with the same message. My Gmail address may already be associated with an Apple Account, and I cannot rule out having used my Android phone number with Apple in the past. To avoid either possibility, I attempted the new account with a Proton Mail address and a secondary number. The result did not change. That does not establish why Apple is rejecting the account, and it is not a Sunbird failure by itself. But it does show that the new-Apple-ID workaround is not straightforward in practice.

Day 3: Apple Support

I reached out to Apple Support for help. Support was able to review my situation and allow me to complete creating a new account. I verified the newly created Apple Account directly with Apple before trying Sunbird again. The account and password work there. Sunbird, however, still reported that the credentials were incorrect. Because the account was brand new, I allowed a short activation window before drawing any conclusion. But the immediate result was clear: creating the replacement identity was difficult, and even once Apple accepted it, Sunbird could not yet use it.

Day 4: The New Account Reaches Validation

After allowing time for the new Apple Account to activate, I tried again. Apple still accepted the account details directly, but Sunbird again reported that the account information was incorrect. I sent a new support request. As with earlier contact, Sunbird's support flow immediately asked for my UID rather than appearing to identify my existing account or carry forward the previous conversation. From the customer side, this creates a fragmented experience: each follow-up begins by supplying account information again, while earlier questions about my subscription and the recommended workaround remained unanswered. At 1:11 PM, a later attempt finally moved beyond the "account information is incorrect" error and into Sunbird's validation process. I do not have the exact account-creation timestamp, so I cannot say how long the new Apple Account needed before Sunbird began accepting its credentials. That suggests the earlier error may have been tied to the activation state of the new account rather than an incorrect password. Validation was still in progress. The next step was to confirm whether the connection completed and whether iMessage actually worked in real conversations.

Day 5: The Subscription Catch-22

Sunbird Support finally replied about a promo code. It said the extension could not be applied because I had already subscribed, and suggested I cancel my subscription if I wanted to use the code instead. That does not resolve the problem. Cancelling a subscription normally prevents a future renewal. It does not refund a payment already made or restore the time spent testing the service. I declined that option and asked again whether a refund was possible, this time including my UID in the email to avoid another request for the same account information. Meanwhile, the new Apple Account did not complete its validation attempt on Day 4. On Day 5, I am trying the connection again.

Week 3, Day 1: The Final Connection Attempt

At 8:00 AM, I started one final attempt to connect the replacement Apple Account. This was not the account Sunbird originally failed to support. It was the new account Support had recommended, created specifically to test whether its workaround could get me into the service.

The attempt initially looked more promising than earlier ones. It moved past the “account information is incorrect” error and reached 77% within ten minutes. But it eventually stalled at 99% again.

At 6:40 PM, more than ten hours after the attempt began, Sunbird was still displaying its 99% validation screen. The app said that, if the attempt was unsuccessful, it would send a notification within 25 minutes to try again. No connection completed and no notification arrived.

I have now paused further connection attempts. For the past two weeks, I have mostly been repeating connection attempts rather than receiving new troubleshooting from Sunbird. Its Support team identified my original Apple Account as unsupported and told me to create another one, but the replacement account has reached the same 99% dead end. I will wait for specific new guidance, but I will not keep repeating the same setup process without it.

Week 3, Day 2: A Possible Cause That Does Not Fit

After I sent a follow-up, Sunbird Support finally came back with a more specific explanation. It said the connection is failing at the two-factor authentication step and asked whether the Apple Account used with Sunbird is also signed in on an iPhone, iPad or Mac with Advanced Data Protection enabled. Sunbird said that feature is not currently supported.

That could matter for someone connecting an Apple Account already used on an Apple device. But it does not explain the replacement account I am testing. I created that account on my Pixel 10 Pro XL after Support told me my original Apple Account was unsupported. It has never been signed in on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, so Advanced Data Protection is not enabled.

I replied with that information, along with my UID again. The replacement account works when I sign in directly with Apple, but Sunbird has repeatedly stalled at 99% while validating it.

The reply is the first new troubleshooting lead I have received in two weeks, but it has not yet provided a path forward for the account currently failing to connect. It also continues to show how fragmented the support process feels: even inside an existing email thread, each contact begins by supplying the same account information again rather than building on the previous attempts.

Conclusion: Sunbird Is Not Ready

Verdict: I cannot recommend Sunbird right now. It may work for some users, but after three weeks, two Apple Accounts, repeated 99% stalls, and a paid subscription I could not use, it did not work for me.

I started this review hoping to spend a month living with Sunbird. I wanted to find out whether iMessage on Android was finally practical enough to justify paying for.

Instead, I spent most of that time trying to get through setup.

My established Apple Account could not connect. Sunbird Support called it a rare connection edge case and told me to create a different account. Creating that new Apple Account on Android required help from Apple Support. Once it existed, Sunbird first rejected its valid credentials, then eventually accepted them only to stall at 99% again.

That is useful information for people using an Apple Account on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. But it did not apply to the replacement account I created for this test, because that account had never been signed in to an Apple device.

I do not think my experience proves Sunbird fails for everyone. I have seen that it can work for some people. But that is not enough for a service charging a monthly subscription. Customers need to know whether they are likely to be compatible before paying, and they need a clear path forward when setup fails.

Sunbird gave me neither. It gave me a paid subscription, a string of 99% progress bars, and Support conversations that repeatedly began by asking for the same UID instead of building on the account history already in front of them.

For now, I am pausing active testing and cancelling my autorenewal. I will update this review if Sunbird provides a workable fix, resolves the refund request, or materially improves the connection process. But I will not keep repeating the same setup steps without new guidance.

And if it is, is anyone actually watching? I want to be clear upfront. This is not a conclusion. It is an observation, a theory, and an open question. I could be completely wrong. But I've been using four paid AI subscriptions, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude, long enough and consistently enough to notice something that I can't quite explain away. And when I started looking at how these platforms actually make money at scale, the pattern started to make a different kind of sense.

What I've Actually Noticed

This isn't a free tier complaint. I'm paying for all four of these platforms. I'm not hitting usage walls and getting bumped to a weaker model. I'm a paying customer on each one, and what I'm describing is a quality shift I've observed over time on platforms I've been using long enough to know what they used to feel like. ChatGPT is where it's most pronounced for me. I used it extensively to build this site, and I know what it felt like when it was working at its best: direct, decisive, implementing rather than discussing. More hedging at the end. The output is longer. The usefulness per word has gone down. Gemini has been a similar story, and honestly a more frustrating one. The back and forth required to get a clean output has increased significantly. What should be a single exchange becomes three or four, not because the task is complex but because the first response over-explains, qualifies, and then asks for confirmation rather than committing to an answer. Copilot and Claude sit differently in my experience, but I'm not here to hand out free passes. The question I'm asking applies to the whole industry, and readers should draw their own conclusions based on their own use.
Why This Matters Beyond Annoyance
Overexplaining feels like a minor frustration when you're an individual user. But when you understand how these platforms bill at scale, the pattern starts to look less like a quality control issue and more like a structural incentive. That's the part I want to dig into.

Most people using consumer AI subscriptions pay a flat monthly fee and don't think much beyond that. If a model is trained on human feedback and human raters consistently score longer, more thorough-sounding responses as higher quality, the model learns to be verbose. That's not a conspiracy. That's a training artefact. But the question of who defines "thorough" and what the downstream billing consequences of thoroughness happen to be is worth asking. If the people defining quality metrics are working for companies whose enterprise revenue scales with token output, the incentive to define quality as verbosity is at least present. Whether it has been acted on, deliberately or otherwise, is something only the companies involved can answer honestly. The bloated response also has a second effect beyond token billing. It fills the context window faster. Every AI conversation has a limit to how much text it can hold in memory at once. A model that uses twice as many words to say the same thing fills that window in half the time. Once the window fills, older context drops out. The conversation degrades. The user starts a new session. In a usage-based system, more sessions mean more billing events.

Not because transparency proves innocence, but because the absence of it in an industry billing at this scale is itself worth noticing.
The question I'm really asking: In an industry where output length is directly tied to revenue at scale, who is verifying that the AI you're paying for is optimised for your benefit rather than for the number of words it generates?

Final Thoughts

I've been building things with these tools. I've watched them evolve. And I've noticed a drift in some of them toward a style of response that feels less like intelligence and more like performance. More words, less substance. More process, less output. More of what looks like helpfulness without quite delivering it. Maybe that's model regression. Maybe it's safety overcorrection. Maybe it's the chaotic side effect of shipping new versions too fast. Or maybe, in an industry where every output token has a price attached to it at scale, the incentive to produce more of them is baked so deep into the economics that it doesn't need to be a conscious decision to shape the product. I don't know which of those is true. I suspect the people running these companies don't fully know either. As Nokia's phone making business completes its transition into Microsoft, we witness the birth of one company's last Lumia handsets — the Nokia Lumia 830. The Lumia 830 is a beautifully crafted device, with a premium metal build combined with the colorful personalization of the Lumia range. But the highlight is clearly its 10MP PureView camera, which allows the device to offer high quality photography at an affordable price.

Despite being marketed as a flagship device, Microsoft packs the Lumia 830 into a modest box with only the basics — a charger, a microUSB cable and the usual manuals. There is no bundled headset. While the handset supports wireless charging out of the box, you will have to purchase the wireless charging plate separately.

HARDWARE

The Lumia 830 design is clearly inspired by the flagship Lumia 930 and originates from the Lumia 925. You feel it exude Nokia's premium build quality as soon as you pick it up. The display curves slightly, almost seamlessly blending into the aluminum frame that runs around the sides.

Having reviewed the Lumia 925 previously, I notice the Lumia 830 frame is sharper to the touch while the 925 was smooth and curved comfortably. I am also not a fan of the silver metal color, which looks a little cheap. An issue I found on both the Lumia 930 and the Lumia Icon, though I do prefer the AT&T variant which features a dark metal band.

Nokia has slimmed the frame down to 8.5mm from the 9.8mm of the Lumia 930, making the Lumia 830 the thinnest Lumia ever.

The removable rear panel comes in orange and is available in green, white and black. The polycarbonate material is easy to grip and resistant to fingerprint smudges. The noticeable cutout in the rear houses the main attraction — the 10MP PureView camera — with PureView and ZEISS logos clearly visible.

Overall the handset has a generously sized display but remains usable with one hand. The sharpness of the side frame can get irritating at times, but not overly so. The Lumia 830 is easily one of the best designed smartphones from Nokia.

Display

The Lumia 830 comes with a 5 inch ClearBlack display at a 720 x 1280 pixel resolution. It's not the 1080p display found on the flagship Lumia 930, but its 294 ppi pixel density provides excellent sharpness and great image quality.

Nokia continues to make the displays super sensitive, allowing users to interact with the Lumia 830 even with gloves on. The ClearBlack technology helps minimize reflectivity during outdoor use, however the relatively low brightness does hurt outdoor performance.

Design

Above the display is the 0.9MP front camera, the earpiece and a couple of sensors. The front camera choice is somewhat disappointing — the Lumia 830 is clearly not designed for great selfies.

Below the display are the traditional Windows Phone capacitive buttons — Back, Start and Search. Holding the Back button brings up the multitasking menu, while holding Search summons Cortana or the Bing Search app. The primary microphone is located just below the Start button.

The left side is completely bare, while the right side houses the volume rocker, power/lock key and the camera shutter.

The 3.5mm headphone jack is found at the top center of the device, next to the microUSB port. The bottom of the device is completely bare.

On the back you will find the 10MP camera with LED flash and the speaker grill on the bottom. Removing the panel reveals the hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 128GB) and the nanoSIM bed. The battery can also be user-replaced if needed.

Connectivity

The Nokia Lumia 830 supports quad-band GSM, 3G, and LTE Category 4 (up to 150Mbps downlink / 50Mbps uplink, carrier-dependent). Local connectivity includes dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n (2.4GHz and 5GHz), DLNA, stereo Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS with GLONASS support.

NFC lets you share content with other NFC-enabled devices or use the Wallet app to pay at participating retailers. You can also cast content wirelessly to a TV, monitor or projector via the settings menu, and the internet sharing feature lets you share a connection with a custom broadcast name and password. The rear panel is wireless charging-enabled — just pair it with a compatible charging plate.

Camera

The highlight of the Lumia 830 is its 10MP PureView camera with a ZEISS lens. It also features optical image stabilization (OIS) for both still images and video, allowing shots at lower shutter speeds than regular cameras.

The Lumia Camera app offers white balance, focus, ISO, shutter speed and exposure settings. Expanding the top menu activates Pro mode with a real-time slider interface. Camera Lenses add further functionality — highlights include Lumia Cinemagraph, Panorama, and Refocus, with many more downloadable directly from the Lenses interface.

The 10MP samples are of high quality with accurate exposure and color. Both daylight and low-light photos appear crisp and detailed with very little noise. Using the Lumia Panorama Lens you can capture high-res panoramas in both portrait (30+ MP) and landscape (35+ MP) modes.

The Lumia 830 captures 1080p video at 30fps. By default, videos use dual-channel AAC audio at 256 Kbps, but you can enable Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 at 384 Kbps in six channels (AC3 codec). The OIS greatly improves video quality, dampening hand shake and making camera movement look smooth and professional.

SOFTWARE

The Nokia Lumia 830 runs Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, which also includes the latest Lumia Denim software expansion package. Update 1 adds folder support, customizable snooze alarms, Cortana in more regions (UK and China) and various under-the-hood improvements.

The Lumia 830 features a lockscreen with time, date and important notifications. When idle, Nokia's proprietary Glance Screen takes over, providing latest notifications while preserving battery life.

Start Screen and Live Tiles

Unlocking the screen reveals a collection of resizable live tiles providing up-to-date information from the apps they represent. With Windows Phone 8.1 you can set a background image for transparent tiles. Update 1 introduces folder support — drag tiles onto each other to create folders that continue to show live updates.

Action Center

The Action Center is Microsoft's notification center, accessed by pulling down from the top of the screen. It manages alerts from calls, messages, emails and more, and provides four fully customizable quick-action toggles. Available options include Airplane mode, Bluetooth, brightness, camera, internet sharing, location, quiet hours, rotation lock, Wi-Fi and more. Notifications can be customized per-app for banners, sounds and vibration.

Multi-tasking

Press and hold the back button to view a list of open apps. Swipe through to close or resume them. Certain apps — Navigation, Cortana and Battery — continue running in the background unless specifically killed.

Quiet Hours

Microsoft's Do Not Disturb mode blocks calls and messages over pre-defined intervals, or automatically during calendar events. An Inner Circle feature lets priority contacts break through, and repeat callers within three minutes can also be allowed through.

Internet Explorer 11

IE 11 brings private browsing, Reader mode, unlimited tab support, password saving, tab and bookmark sync across devices and inline video playback. Back and forward gestures are added via left and right edge swipes. Reader mode strips articles down to text and images for clean, distraction-free reading with configurable background color and font size.

Microsoft Office

Word, Excel and PowerPoint viewing and editing is free and integrated into the OS. With OneDrive integration, documents sync automatically between your phone and computer. OneNote supports multi-level lists, photos, voice memos and OneDrive sync.

MSN Apps

Microsoft includes its Bing app suite: Travel, Sports, Finance, Food & Drinks, Health & Fitness and News. The Weather app is also Bing-powered and offers a live tile and lockscreen widget.

HERE Apps

Nokia Lumia smartphones come with an exclusive selection of Nokia apps including Storyteller, Creative Studio, HERE navigation and Nokia Camera lenses.

HERE Drive+ offers free lifetime voice-guided navigation worldwide with offline map downloads. HERE Maps acts as a city exploration tool with place discovery, photos, reviews and Lonely Planet guides.

Xbox Apps

Xbox Music and Xbox Video offer content from the Xbox marketplace directly on your device. Your Xbox Games hub brings over your profile, avatar, friends and achievements from your console.

Other Apps

The Calendar app supports color-coded sub-calendars with day, agenda and weekly views including weather forecast icons. Storage Sense tracks internal memory and configures where content is saved. Battery Saver tracks battery usage and allows per-app background controls. Files for Windows Phone provides full file management. The Microsoft Store supports automatic app updates over Wi-Fi or cellular.

CONCLUSION
The Nokia Lumia 830 is sadly the last Lumia to carry Nokia's branding, but Nokia is going out with a bang. Despite being pitched as an "affordable" flagship, Nokia has done an excellent job with a solid metal frame, curved protective glass, a matte finish rear and a 5 inch ClearBlack IPS display. Its flagship credentials are anchored by the 10MP PureView camera with ZEISS optics and OIS. The mid-range Snapdragon 400 and 720p resolution keep costs down, but like all Windows Phones, performance is smooth and lag-free. The Lumia 830 is the best designed Lumia to date.

This is not the end for Nokia. We have already seen the Nokia N1 tablet with Android, and we hope to see much more when the company's non-compete clause expires on December 31, 2015.

ALTERNATIVES

Nokia's flagship offers a similar yet bulkier build with more powerful hardware — a Snapdragon 800 CPU and a full 1080p HD display. It costs only about $50 more and delivers better performance and still camera quality, though you lose the microSD card slot.

Android Alternatives

Notable alternatives include the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini, Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and the HTC One mini 2. The most notable competitor is the Motorola Moto G 2014 — a 5 inch 720p Snapdragon 400 device running Android 5.0 Lollipop at roughly half the price of the Lumia 830, though it can't compete on camera quality.
