Google Chrome updated (69) for Android and iOS with new look and notch support

Google Chrome updated (69) for Android and iOS

Google Chrome is celebrating its 10th anniversary and the company has launched version 69 of its browser. The new version launched earlier this week for Windows, Mac and Linux and is now available for Android and iOS devices.

The new version of Google Chrome brings Google's Material Theme design, which offers a clean minimalistic interface which makes navigation easier than ever before.

The update also adds support for display cutoffs (notches) which have become a common trend among smartphone manufacturers lately. Developers will be able to expand their websites to fit the entire area of the display on this latest version of Chrome.

Google also states that the new version of Chrome enables secure and easy mobile payments using third-party payment apps. The update also offers improved password generation on more websites.

You can download Google Chrome for Android on the Google Play Store, while Google Chrome for iOS is available through the Apple App Store.

Google Chrome for Android updated (42.0) with new website monitoring feature

Google Chrome for Android updated (42.0)Google Chrome for Android has been updated to version 42.0.2311.107, and while the improvements will not drastically change the way you browse websites on your mobile device, they do include a couple of new features, as well as the usual range of bug fixes and performance improvements.

With the latest version of Chrome for Android, Google introduced the ability to monitor websites for changes in content. Set up the monitoring feature on your favorite website, and Chrome will fire up a notification when the content is changed. Unfortunately, this new feature will not work out of the box, as web developers need to implement the new Google Push API for Chrome. Possible use case scenarios include the ability to be notified when your order status changes. To prevent abuse, the user will have to explicitly set up permissions for these notifications, and the notifications messages themselves include a site setting button.

The other new feature allows is basically a quick way to websites to the home screen, a trick that the Android browser does by monitoring your browsing habits. Once Chrome 42 for Android detects that you regularly visit a website, it will ask for permission to add the website to the home screen. The ability to add a website to the home-screen manually was introduced back in October 2013 with Chrome for Android version 31.

You can download the update directly on your Android device through the Google Play Store or by using the following link

Google Chrome for iOS updated (42.0) with several improvements

Google Chrome for iOS updated (42.0)Google Chrome for iOS has been updated to version 42.0.2311.47 which introduces a new pull down to refresh feature, which makes single handed usage of the web browser much easier. This feature was first introduced on Chrome for Android beta, and later pushed out to the mainstream Android version. Its good to note see that the feature was brought over to the iOS platform.

What's great about the new pull down feature is that it can also be used to close and open tabs - pulling down and left opens a tab, while pulling down and right closes the active tab.

The new version also brings a widget for the Today view of your Notification Center, which allows you to open a new tab or initiate a voice search. Password managers are now also supported, allowing you to easily fill in password fields when required.

Additionally, when you search for weather, stocks, or unit conversions, the new version of Chrome for iOS will provide you with answers in the suggestions drop-down menu. It will also suggest to open any links you might have in your clipboard.

You can download the update directly on your iOS device through the Apple App Store or by using the following link

Google will adopt HTTP/2 support on Chrome 40, will discontinue SPDY by early 2016

Google ChromeIn case you didn't know, SPDY is Google's reimagining of the HTTP protocol, designed to reduce latency, streamline data flow, and generally speed up data transmission from a server to your browser. However, in an attempt to standardize the protocol, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has developed HTTP/2 (originally HTTP 2.0) which is in fact based on SPDY.

Google has made many significant contributions to HTTP/2, which almost completely mirrors the feature set offered by SPDY, including things like multiplexing, header compression, prioritization, and protocol negotiation. Since HTTP/2 will be an official open standard, there's no reason to keep SPDY around anymore.

Support for HTTP/2 will be rolled into Chrome 40 over the next few weeks, but SPDY will remain operational at least until early 2016. This should give developers about a year to migrate to the new protocol, or simply allow their servers to fall back to HTTP/1.1, like they currently do for many other browsers. Alongside the removal of SPDY, Google also plans to remove support for the Transport Layer Security (TLS) extension NPN, and replace it with ALPN. A number of implementations have been recommended to help developers adopt HTTP/2 and ALPN on their servers.

[Chrome app] Hangouts

Hangouts for ChromeGoogle has released a new Hangouts app for Google Chrome. The company already has a Hangouts Extension for the platform, which allows communicating with your Hangouts friends, but the new standalone app works much like Facebook's chatheads feature, but for your desktop.

The new Hangouts app is available for download through the Chrome webstore and can be downloaded on Windows, Mac or Chrome OS. When you install and run the app, a Hangouts bubble floats on the side of your desktop, and subsequent conversations float above that. Users can click and hold to drag the bubble around and manage/participate in chats just like on the web. New messages automatically preview in a word bubble next to their respective chat, and users can hover over each chat to see the last correspondence.

You can download the app directly on your device through the Chrome Webstore or by using the following link:

It's worth noting that - for now - the app has the same contacts and chat tabs as its Android counterpart, but no dialer tab. To dial a contact, you'll need to hit the search bar first, then select the phone icon.

Also of note is that the app is apparently not fully ready for OSX, as some users are experiencing unexpected behavior. For now, it also appears there's no easy way to switch accounts or support multiple accounts - the app will pick up whichever account is your primary on Chrome.

Google Now coming to Chrome very soon

There have been several hints that Google Now is making its way to the Chrome web browser for some time, but we maybe closer than ever to its launch. Most recently we have been seeing a pop-up notification which asks if we would like to "Enable Google Now Cards".

The prompt seems is appearing on both the Windows and Mac version of Chrome. On Windows the card appears in the status bar along the bottom, while on Mac OS X it is in the menu bar up top.

Once Google Now for Chrome is ready for use it should offer notifications, directions, TV shows, sports scores and more, similar to what we have on our Android smartphones and tablets.

Google Now will continue to extend on the rich notification center which was released with Chrome version 28 which allows notifications from services like Gmail, Twitter, Google Calendar, Tweetdeck and more. We also expect Google Now will be integrated into the Google Voice search which came with version 27 of Chrome. The Voice search looks almost identical to the Google Now search on Android and it would make sense to offer voice commands for various Google Now cards.

While we are still unable to see the level of information that will be displayed on Google Now for Chrome, we are definitely excited by how rich the Chrome web browser has become over the last few months.

Google Hangouts update adds support for HD video streaming

Google has recently transitioned from the H.264 video codec to VP8 and with it introduced HD streaming to Google Hangouts. Google started rolling out the change to users in the last few weeks, but it will still be awhile before this rolls out to everyone.

Google introduced VP8 back in 2010 as an open and royalty-free format allowing users to watch video in browsers without the need for any additional plugins. Google claims that streaming HD video to ten participants using the H.264 codec would have required too much processing power. Using VP8 allows them to stream higher definition streams at lower bit rates.

The industry is now moving toward adopting WebRTC, which will allow users to launch video chats in the web browser without the need for apps and plugins. Google isn't the only company to push for the new technology, but it has integrated the necessary bits into the desktop and Android versions of Chrome. Google would eventually want to utilize WebRTC within Hangouts, but the standard needs time to mature before the transition can be made.

Make sure you download the latest version of Google Hangouts for AndroidiOS and Chrome to enjoy the HD video chats with your friends and family.

Google Chromecast announced, allows streaming content to your TV from any device

Google Chromecast announcedToday was a day full of announcements from Google, which included a new Google Nexus 7 and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. But one of the most interesting announcements came in the small form of the Google Chromecast.

The Chromecast is a tiny dongle which you can attach to your TV HDMI port and allows you to control your TV from a range of Android, iOS devices or a Windows or Mac computer which is running Google Chrome.

Once you have found an available HDMI port on your computer and connected your Chromecast to it, ensure your controlling device and Chromecast are on the same network. The YouTube for Android app and the YouTube website will offer options to broadcast content from your controlling device to your Chromecast and allow you to enjoy your media on the larger TV display. Google also demonstrated the ability to enjoy Netflix movies or Pandora music on your TV and surround speakers through Chromecast. You can even enjoy your Google Play content through Chromecast

Google will offer developers the ability to Chromecast their own content. Chromecast will be available for Android and iOS devices and for computers running the Chrome web browser, but Windows Phones and Windows RT tablets are currently left out as Google has chosen not to support these platforms yet.

While apps on Android and iOS will be limited to those developers who add support for Chromecast, the web browser on your Mac and Windows computers offers limitless opportunities. Google will add the ability to stream your Chrome tabs to your TV, which means photos, videos and content you are browsing on your computer can be streamed through Chromecast. Google Cast for Chrome is still in beta, but you can download it using the following link and try it out now.

Download Google Cast

Obviously the most important component is the device itself, which is current priced at an ultra affordable $35 and can be purchased on the Google Play Store starting today by using the following link.

Buy Chromecast

Additionally Chromecast comes bundled with three months of free Netflix, which should allow your to catch up on popular movies and TV shows you like. Chromecast will also be available through most major retailers from July 28th.

Google Chrome updated (28.0) with rich notification center

Google Chrome has been updated to version 28 (28.0.1500.71) for Windows and Mac and brings a rich notification center (only on Windows) among other features and improvements. The Mac version is also said to be receiving the notification center, but for now its reported that “Mac is coming soon” without a specific date.

You can allow the update to be installed automatically in the background  through the browser's built in silent updater or manually check for it by heading to 'About Google Chrome' on your menu or google.com/chrome.

Google Chrome version 28 is also the first build expected to run the Blink browsing engine instead of WebKit. You can head over to chrome://version/ on the browser which will display the Blink engine version.

Google says that they have “... designed these notifications to be beautiful, useful and engaging”. Notifications from apps and extensions can be formatted to display text and images, as well as include actions directly inside the pop-up.

Chrome Notifications for WindowsChrome Notifications for Chrome OS

This extends the ability to Chrome app developers to add these rich notifications to their own applications which allow users to interact directly with the app through the notifications, even if your web browser is closed. Sof if you head away from your computer for some time, you can easily get back to your missed notifications. And if you don’t want to deal with them at all, you can easily disable them from within the settings.

The Linux version of Chrome was updated to version 28 (28.0.1500.45) back on June 17, ahead of the other desktop platforms and likely closer to Chrome OS releases. The minimum requirements for Linux distributions have also been updated and Ubuntu 12.04+, Debian 7+, OpenSuSE 12.2+, and Fedora Linux 17+ are now required to run Chrome.
