Sony is now releasing the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean software update to the Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia ZL, Sony Xperia ZR and the Sony Xperia Tablet Z.
Sony does mention that the availability of the update “may vary by market and carrier.” So not everyone gets to enjoy Android 4.3 starting today or the next few days, but the update will certainly come eventually.
In case you don’t know, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean brings a nicer graphical experience alongside Project Butter performance and UI optimization. The update also brings Sony’s Smart Social Camera to the four Xperias, plus many enhancements on other Sony-specific apps and services.
All four Sony devices that are receiving Android 4.3 Jelly Bean now will likely also get Android 4.4 KitKat. Sony hasn't given an exact date, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out.

The Xperia ZL is the slightly less capable alternative to the Sony Xperia Z. It lacks the water resistance and probably doesn't look as good as its more expensive sibling, but it may be a good budget option all the same.

For example the Xperia ZL features a matter finish instead of the glossy finish of the Xperia Z, offering a cleaner look between the two. The Xperia ZL also doesn't feature the dust and water resistance of its sibling but offers a dedicated shutter key for quick photos, a front camera which is positioned in the lower right side of the screen and a plastic cover in the rear which covers the microSD and microSIM card slots.
In terms of hardware the Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL are quite similar. They feature a 5 inch 1080p display with Mobile BRAVIA 2 engine, a 13 megapixel rear camera capable of 1080p HD video capture, 4G LTE connectivity, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Sony’s custom UI and is powered by a quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM.
Given that the Xperia ZL doesn’t feature some of the rugged aspects of the Xperia Z, it will be interesting to see if the former is offered at the lower price point than the company’s flagship.

The Xperia ZL has a 2370 mAh battery which is slightly larger than the one on the Xperia Z. The device also features the IR blaster and the accompanying app which allows you to use your phone as a remote control for a wide array of TVs, home stereos and other electronics around the house.
The Xperia ZL is expected to arrive as early as this quarter in select markets and is expected to be available in HSPA+ and LTE flavors. However Sony has still to announce which carriers and locations will get access to this device.
