Microsoft Windows 7 reaches final year of extended support
January 14, 2020 marks the final day of support from Microsoft for Windows 7. The date marks the first Patch Tuesday of 2020, after which Windows 7 will no longer receive updates, fixes, and security fixes.
Windows 7 was first introduced by Microsoft in July 2009 but it usually takes enterprise customers several months into its lifecycle before they implement it to their user base. Microsoft's newest version, Windows 10 launched in July 2015 and has since reached more than half of all Windows devices in the enterprise.
Windows 7 and older versions of Windows are still run by the rest, but the support clock is slowly ticking down. Microsoft officials have announced two ways that Windows 7 users can continue to get security updates beyond the January 14, 2020 date. Both of these ways are designed for business customers, not consumers.
Microsoft will sell paid Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESUs) on a per-device basis, with the price increases each year. These ESUs will be available to any Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise users with volume-licensing agreements, and those with Windows Software Assurance and/or Windows 10 Enterprise or Education subscriptions will get a discount. These ESUs will provide Windows 7 Extended Security Updates through January 2023.
Microsoft also will provide ESUs for no additional cost to customers who buy the Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop service, which is designed to allow users to virtualize Windows 7 and 10, Office 365 ProPlus apps and other third-party applications by running them remotely in Azure virtual machines. Those wanting to virtualize Windows 7 after Microsoft support ends in January 2020 will be able to do so for three years by using WVD. WVD still is not available in public preview but is expected to be sometime this calendar quarter. Microsoft has not yet announced a final availability date or pricing for WVD.
End of "mainstream" support for Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 installed occurred on January 13, 2015. Mainstream support includes no-charge incident support and paid incident support; security update support; and the ability to request non-security updates. End of extended support for the product, on January 14, 2020, means the end of paid support; free security update support; and Extended Hotfix Support.
Windows 8.1 customers will continue to get security updates from Microsoft for free until January 10, 2023. Windows 10 users get free support based on the date when their version of Windows 10 was introduced. (See this Windows lifecycle support page from Microsoft for details.)

How to download Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 ISOs
In the past Microsoft only offered Windows 10 ISO downloads on their website, removing access to download older versions of Windows. However, according to a new report Microsoft now has ISO downloads available for Windows 7 and 8.1, alongside Windows 10.
Paul Thurrott reports that previously Microsoft allowed downloading Windows 7 and Windows 8 ISOs through Digital River. But later restricted downloads to Windows 10 only. Fortunately, it looks like they have had a change of mind, by making ISO files for Microsoft’s other supported Windows versions from the Microsoft Software Download site. Check out the links below:
You will require a valid 25-digit product key before you can download the Windows 7 ISO. Once you download the ISO file, you can copy one to USB or DVD disc to install Windows or mount the ISO (on Windows 8 or newer) and use it as a virtual disk.

This news was revealed at the 'Windows 10: The Next Chapter' event which took place today, where the software giant showcased the progress they had made on the platform since it was unveiled for the enterprise back in September.
However, there is a catch to the free offer. Those who wish to upgrade to Windows 10 for free will have to do so within 12 months of the Windows 10 launch - a date yet to be determined by the company. While Microsoft is being generous with the upgrade, they also want consumers to make the switch to Windows 10 quickly.
Windows 10 will unify Microsoft's desktop and mobile platforms, and it makes sense that the company will want as many customers as possible to run one version of Windows. This will also ensure that users get software updates quickly and developers can also reach a new generation of Windows users. Once Microsoft has its strong Windows user base on Windows 10, they will have a compelling marketing platform for their mobile OS as well.
During the event, Microsoft pointed out how it oversaw the "seamless" transition of some 600+ million users from Windows 7 to Windows 7 SP1, and is clearly looking to replicate that feat with Windows 10. Clearly the minimum requirements in hardware on a Windows 10 machine will match the requirements Microsoft placed for Windows 7 users.
Unfortunately Microsoft wasnt ready to reveal how much a Windows 10 license will cost after the 12 month grace period. While it may not be excessive as it has been in the past, the thought of getting something for free should be a sufficient pull factor to get more customers to upgrade to the latest version of Windows.

Internet Explorer (IE) comes preinstalled with Windows and has been the go-to browser for PC users for years. Now with Google’s Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox growing in dominance, IE finds itself quickly falling down to third place. But Microsoft has continued their work in bringing back their web browser to its once high held glory and they have begun their journey back with Internet Explorer 10.
Even though the preview version has been released as planned, there is no word on when the final build of IE 10 will be available for Windows 7 users. Meanwhile, developers will have the opportunity to get themselves accommodated with what they can expect.

Unfortunately, this service will remain exclusive to the above-mentioned platforms and will not be available to users of Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 devices.

Xbox Music will not be available for Windows 7 or Windows Phone 7
Microsoft recently unveiled their Xbox Music service for Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and Xbox 360. which will offer free music streaming on Windows 8 based PCs and tablets. Unfortunately, this service will remain exclusive to the above-mentioned platforms and will not be available to users of Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 devices.Microsoft has stated that Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 users can continue to use the Zune music service, which will provide the same catalog of songs as Xbox Music. Jerry Johnson, General Manager of Xbox Music had the following to say:
"Windows 7 will still have the old Zune client. That client will have access based on the subscriptions and the content that anyone purchased and that content can flow forward to Windows 8 but we're not touching that client just now," "It's a very different feature set but you'll have access to the same content," says Johnson. "We're not going to update the [Windows Phone 7 client]. There might be some iconography upgrade from what I've seen but it will continue to be a Zune product because it's not going to take on the Zune features we're going to walk through today."
Microsoft also plans to add a cloud storage service to Xbox Music next year, which will allow users to scan-and-match their own music and have them stored in the cloud. legacy Windows products will not have access to these features either, as Microsoft looks to adopt a more Apple-like mentality with their upgrades moving forward.
However what's strange is that Microsoft plans to offer their Xbox music client to Android and iOS, while they try an isolate themselves from their own Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7. It seems Microsoft wants to isolate their existing customers on legacy platforms to force them into upgrading to the newest versions of Windows and Windows Phone.
