How to get the Opera web browser and Opera Mobile store on your classic Nokia device

Late last year, we learned that Microsoft had signed a deal with Norwegian software maker Opera, to help manage their Nokia device portfolio. While Microsoft will continue to maintain and manage the Lumia lineup, Opera would replace the Nokia Store and Nokia Xpress Browser with their own solutions on older Nokia handsets.

Starting this month, owners of class Nokia handsets running Series 40, Series 60, Symbian, Asha and Nokia X will be alerted to switch from using Nokia Store to Opera Mobile Store; and from Nokia Xpress Browser to Opera Mini.

Store

The Nokia Store will be discontinued on 31 March 2015 on devices running Series 40, Series 60, Symbian, Asha and the Nokia X platform. You may have already received an in-app notification from Nokia Store that it will soon become Opera Mobile Store. Lust like Nokia Store, Opera Mobile Store has thousands of games and apps, both free and paid, for Series 40, Series 60, Symbian, Asha, and Nokia X family phones. Developers on the Nokia Store are also being alerted to transfer their products to the Opera Store.

On Series 40, Asha, and Series 60 phone when you open Nokia Store, you will be redirected to the Opera Store mobile website. On a Nokia X family phone you are asked to download the new Opera Store app, which replaces Nokia Store on your phone. Apps purchased from Nokia Store continue to work after the transition, but apps that have been paid for are not available to re-download.

The process of migrating customers from Nokia Store to Opera Mobile Store is expected to be complete in the first half of 2015, at which point Nokia Store will be closed.

Browser

Nokia Xpress Browser for Series 40, Series 30+ and Asha devices is getting discontinued at the end of this year and will replaced by Opera Mini. Just like Xpress, Opera Mini is also a proxy browser, which compresses your Internet data, making mobile web browsing faster and highly efficient.

Depending on which Nokia device you use, when you launch Nokia Xpress Browser on your phone, you will be asked if you want to upgrade your browser to Opera Mini in a few simple clicks, or you can choose to continue using Xpress Browser until the next set of reminders. If that doesn’t work, try visiting m.opera.com on your phone to download it manually.

Upcoming Nokia device codenames leaked

Upcoming Nokia device codenamesA new report suggest that Nokia has a huge lineup of devices planned for the future. The Finnish phone maker is in the final stages of its acquisition deal with Microsoft, and one would think that Nokia will slow down until Microsoft has worked out Nokia's future under its leadership

According to a leak from popular tipster @eveleaks the Nokia Ara, Leo, Moonraker, Onyx, Peridot, Superman, Tesla, and Vantage are code names of devices in Nokia's roadmap.

It's not entirely clear if those eight upcoming handsets will be from the Asha and feature phone line that will keep carrying the Nokia logo, the Lumia line that will eventually be renamed by Microsoft, or a mixture of both, which might have been in the planning before the acquisition.

In any case, we expect to see Nokia and Microsoft release many new Windows Phone down the line, and we cant wait to see how the first device from their partnership will look like.

Nokia Asha 503 - Video Review

The Nokia Asha 503 is an affordable device meant to compete against affordable Android devices from both well-established manufacturers and new Chinese phone companies that now sell phones in mainstream outlets

In an age of smartphones, the Asha 503 sometimes feels underwhelming with its $99 (€99 in Europe) pricing. But its colorful design, unique style and decent 5 megapixel camera should continue to appeal to die-hard Nokia fans.

Nokia Asha 501 receives WhatsApp Messenger

WhatsApp for Asha SeriesThe popular WhatsApp messaging service is now available as a free download for the budget friendly Nokia Asha 501. However in order to use the app you will first have to download an OTA (over-the-air) update, which should be available for Asha 501 sometime this week.

WhatsApp is extremely popular, because it is a cross-platform messaging app that uses your data or Wi-Fi connection in order to send free messages to other WhatsApp users. Yet, annual subscription to the service will cost you $0.99 after the first year, which is free. Apart from this fee, messages sent via WhatsApp are free, provided you have an adequate mobile data plan and don't exceed any data limits. WhatsApp supports not only simple text messages, but picture, video and voice ones as well. When installed, the app will integrate itself in the Nokia Asha software platform and will push notifications when a message is received.

The full, over-the-air software update with WhatsApp is ready now. The standalone WhatsApp client will also be published on the Nokia Store very soon.
WhatsApp will come pre-installed on the Nokia Asha 500, Asha 502 and Asha 503 Dual SIM when those phones start selling later this year.

Nokia Asha 501 receives firmware update

The Nokia Asha 501 is now receiving a new software update which brings several new features and improvements to the device. The device will receive all the new enhancements demonstrated on the recently announced Nokia Asha 500, 502 and 503.
Among the enhancements is the addition of WhatsApp for Asha devices, which was announced during Nokia World 2013 in Abu Dhabi. After installing this update on your Nokia 501 or Dual SIM, you will be able to connect to your friends through the WhatsApp network.

Another feature of the update is the ability to access your phone's camera by swiping up from the lockscreen, and then capturing the image by touching anywhere on your camera screen. After you've taken the shot, it’s another single swipe into the gallery, and you can edit your photos directly from there, with a range of new filters and effects. You can then show off your photos with just a few taps to share it on your favorite social networks.

The Asha Fastlane will also receive a significant update with a livelier more personalized experience, more closely integrated with your social networks. This software update also features improved privacy features. On the Lock screen you can opt to see full notifications or notification icons (so that others can’t see message content). And you can also easily personalise your Fastlane content, configuring which applications can show updates. The choice is yours. You can also get more granular and hide any content you want, item by item. A long press on anything you don’t want visible, and it’s gone.

You will also find more services show notifications in Fastlane, including: Odnoklassniki, Sina Weibo, and Renren. So if you use these services, you’ll get live updates on Fastlane when there’s new activity to check out.

The update also has an API for Voice over IP, which makes it possible to take calls over your data connection using social messaging apps like Nimbuzz.

You also get support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, allowing you to stay connected to you work email on your Asha 501.

How to install the update

You may have already received a notification to update your Asha 501’s software, but if not, we’ve got a quick to-do list so you can get going right away:
  1. Go to "settings" then "phone update".
  2. Use mobile data to check for the update. Make sure you’re on Wifi to make the process as fast and smooth as possible.
  3. Press "update" and presto – you will see the download progress, which takes just a few minutes.
  4. When the update is done, a WhatsApp launcher will appear on your home screen. Press this to download and install the full app.

Nokia Asha 500, Asha 502 and Asha 503 officially announced

Nokia announced three new members of the Asha family at today's Nokia World keynote in Abu Dhabi - The Nokia Asha 500, Nokia Asha 502 and Nokia Asha 503. The new Asha phones come in a wide variety of vibrant colors, but that's not all they have to stand out with visually. They feature something called a crystal-clear design, with a bright, colorful body covered by a transparent layer.

The new Asha Series like its predecessors are not meant to wow you with their specifications. They are entry level devices aimed at emerging markets and don't claim to be otherwise. The Nokia Asha 500 comes with a 2.8-inch 240x320 pixel touchscreen, a 2MP camera, and the option to have the handset in either single- or dual-SIM flavor. The slightly superior Nokia Asha 502 offers a 3-inch touchscreen, and a better, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. Again, the phone supports dual-SIM functionality, which is a feature often demanded by the consumers Asha phones are targeted at.

The Asha series has a new flagship in the form of the Nokia Asha 503 which features a 3-inch 240x320 pixel touchscreen protected by Gorilla Glass 2 and a 5MP camera with LED flash. Interestingly, this is the first 3G-capable phone in the Asha series. Expect seeing it in both single- and dual-SIM configurations.

The Asha devices are based on the same Asha platform which was demonstrated on the Nokia Asha 501. It offers both a traditional icon-oriented home screen and a secondary list, called Fastlane, where frequently used features are organized. This allows users to instantly access their favorite apps and social networks.

The WhatsApp application will also be headed to the Asha platform in the coming weeks, bringing all the the features its current users know and love.

The Nokia Asha 500 will be released in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, priced at about $69 before taxes. The slightly more expensive Nokia Asha 502, priced at around $89 unsubsidized, will launch in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Middle East. Last but not least the Nokia Lumia 503, expect it to carry a price tag of roughly $99 unlocked will be made available in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
