Google Pixel 2 XL gets $400 discount on Best Buy's Doorbuster Deal of the Day

Google Pixel 2 XL gets $400 discount on Best Buy's Doorbuster Deal of the Day

Best Buy recently kicked off their '20 Days of Doorbusters' event, offering various items on discount every day. Today marks day 4 where the retailer was supposed to highlight discounts on big screen smart 4K TVs. However, they have also discounted the Google Pixel 2 XL by $400.

Unfortunately, this isn't a direct discount. Instead, you will have to commit to a device payment plan on Verizon. This means that you will be paying $18.74 per month (instead of $35.41) for 24-months for a total cost of $450 (instead of $850) for your Pixel 2 XL. The model comes with 64GB of storage and is available in black or panda (black and white). If you would rather pick the 128GB model it will cost you $21.99 monthly. There are no bill credits involved, as your savings will be directly reflected in reduced monthly payments.

While the Pixel 2 XL has been succeeded by the Pixel 3 XL, it's still a powerful device with access to the latest Android Pie update from Google. Its specs include a 6-inch POLED display with a 2880 x 1440 pixel resoltion, a very impressive 12MP rear camera, a 3520mAh battery and a Snapdragon 835 chipset with 4GB of RAM.

Google release 'Night Sight' for all Pixel phones with latest camera update

Google Night Sight, which was first announced during the Pixel event last month is now rolling out to all three generations of Pixel smartphones as an update to the Google Camera app. Night Sight allows Pixel users to capture photos in very low lit scenarios by using advanced software processing.

Google uses machine learning to allow Night Sight to adapt to the situation and identify if the camera is being held or propped up. Before you press the shutter button, Night Sight measures your natural handshake, as well as how much motion is in the scene. If Pixel is stable and the scene is still, Night Sight will spend more time capturing light to minimize noise; if Pixel is moving or there’s significant scene motion, Night Sight will use shorter exposures, capturing less light to minimize motion blur.

If your subject moves during the capture, Night Sight can adapt to prevent a modest amount of motion from ruining the shot. Instead of capturing one bright and blurry photo, Night Sight captures an equal amount of light over a burst of many photos that are dark but sharp. By merging this burst, Night Sight prevents motion blur and brightens the photo, giving you a bright and sharp photo.

Night Sight will continue to adapt over time, using machine learning to balance the colors of your photos so that objects show their natural color at night.

How to use Night Sight

Once you have the Google Camera app installed on your Pixel device, it will automatically suggest using Night Slight when you take a photo in low light. You can also manually activate it in your Camera app, by tapping “More” then selecting “Night Sight.” After you tap the shutter button, try to hold still until Night Sight finishes capturing the photo.

Google releases October Android security patch for Pixel devices

Google releases October Android security patch

Google has started rolling out the October Android security update for their Pixel smartphones. Along with the security patches and fixes you can expect from such an update, it also brings some features and improvements. The last security update was released on September 4th.

For example, the update improves the fast-charging experience on the Pixel and Pixel XL. The update also brings improvements in performance for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL handsets for certain protected media formats, and improved stability when using Android Auto. All Pixel handsets had their Call Screening behavior when using Maps Navigation, modified.

Pixel 2 XL update comes in at 54.4MB
On the security side, the patch dated October 1st takes care of 23 issues ranging in severity from critical (8) to high (14) and moderate (1). The October 5th patch deals with three issues all rated high. None of the four Pixel phones required any security fixes, and no Android user was reported to have been negatively impacted by the security issues.

The most potentially serious issue, according to the monthly Android Security Bulletin, was one that could have allowed a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code using a specially crafted file.

On the Pixel 2 XL the update is reportedly around 54.5MB in size. Users should get a notification when it is available for their handsets, at which point they can initiate the over-the-air update. As the month progresses, we expect more Android handsets will receive this security update.

How to install Android 9 Pie on your Google Pixel phones

How to install Android 9 Pie on your Google Pixel phones

Google recently released the final version of Android 9 Pie to all its Pixel handsets. While installing the update on your Pixel (XL) or Pixel 2 (XL) is relatively easy, we've put together a step by step guide on how to install Android 9 Pie on your Google Pixel phones right now.

Step 1

Download the correct OTA file for your Pixel phone on developers.google.com/android/ota
It is extremely important that you select the correct OTA file, as installing the wrong one could permanently damage your device.

Step 2

Download and install ADB and Fastboot on your computer. Windows users may also want to get the Universal ADB Drivers from ClockWorkMod.

Step 3

Set your Pixel in recovery mode by:
  • Turn off your device
  • Hold down the Power button and Volume Down button together until you see the Bootloader screen.

Step 4

Select Recovery Mode by using the Volume Up/Volume Down buttons to scroll to it and the Power Button to select it.

Step 5

The screen will change to a smaller Android with an exclamation mark. Now hold down the Power button and then press the Volume Up button for a second in order to get into Recovery mode.

Step 6

Use the power buttons to scroll down to Apply update from ADB and select it with the Power button. You’ll be left with a blank screen with some text at the bottom.

Step 7

Connect your phone to your computer. Open Terminal on Mac and navigate to the folder that ADB is located in. On Windows you can open a Command Prompt directly from the ADB folder.
  • Windows users type the following in Command Prompt and press Enter:
adb sideload [Insert OTA file name]
  • Mac users type the following in Terminal and press Return:
./adb sideload [Insert OTA file name]

If you've following the steps correctly, you should see some text appear on both the computer and your phone confirming the update is in progress. Once the update is complete, you will return to Recovery Mode. Reboot your device, and you should boot into Android Pie.

Google has released the June Android security path for Pixel and Nexus devices starting today. The patch, dated June 1st, 2018 fixes 20 vulnerabilities while the June 5th, 2018 patch fixes 38.
