Google release 'Night Sight' for all Pixel phones with latest camera update

Google Night Sight, which was first announced during the Pixel event last month is now rolling out to all three generations of Pixel smartphones as an update to the Google Camera app. Night Sight allows Pixel users to capture photos in very low lit scenarios by using advanced software processing.

Google uses machine learning to allow Night Sight to adapt to the situation and identify if the camera is being held or propped up. Before you press the shutter button, Night Sight measures your natural handshake, as well as how much motion is in the scene. If Pixel is stable and the scene is still, Night Sight will spend more time capturing light to minimize noise; if Pixel is moving or there’s significant scene motion, Night Sight will use shorter exposures, capturing less light to minimize motion blur.

If your subject moves during the capture, Night Sight can adapt to prevent a modest amount of motion from ruining the shot. Instead of capturing one bright and blurry photo, Night Sight captures an equal amount of light over a burst of many photos that are dark but sharp. By merging this burst, Night Sight prevents motion blur and brightens the photo, giving you a bright and sharp photo.

Night Sight dealing with moving subjects

Night Sight will continue to adapt over time, using machine learning to balance the colors of your photos so that objects show their natural color at night.

How to use Night Sight

Once you have the Google Camera app installed on your Pixel device, it will automatically suggest using Night Slight when you take a photo in low light. You can also manually activate it in your Camera app, by tapping “More” then selecting “Night Sight.” After you tap the shutter button, try to hold still until Night Sight finishes capturing the photo.

Playground for Android is a rebranded AR Stickers for Pixel phones

Playground for AndroidPlayground for Android is now available on the Google Play Store. Formally known as AR Stickers, this app allowed you to add augmented reality stickers onto a photo using your camera on your compatible smartphone.

With the relaunching of the app as Playground, all stickers are now called Playmoji. Also, in addition to the already existing stickers, Google launched four new packs called Pets, Signs, Sports, and Weather.

Playground for Android is currently only compatible with the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL and will be available as a new Pixel camera mode. According to Google, the app will eventually support the first and second generation Pixel smartphones as well.

Playground for Android - Playmoji

Playground for Android was demonstrated during Made by Google event, and allows users to add realistic augmented reality characters (Playmoji) to your photos captured from your Pixel camera. These characters will react with each other and with the subject of the photo. Playground will even try and make suggestions for relevant stickers by analysing the photo.

After months of leaks and speculation, the Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL were finally unveiled today by the company during a special event. DISPLAY

Both new Pixels come with OLED displays, and Google has clearly fixed the blue-tint and burn-in issues found on last year's Pixel 2 XL. The smaller Pixel 3 has a 5.5 inch display with a 1080 x 2160 pixel resolution, while the larger Pixel 3 XL has a 6.3 inch display with a 1440 x 2960 pixel resolution. The only complaint about the Pixel 3 XL is the immense size of the notch Google has added, which has to be one of the largest we have seen on a smartphone.

CAMERA

While Google hasn't followed the trend of dual cameras on the rear, their very capable 12 megapixel camera makes use of the powerful processor and Google's AI algorithms to provide amazing top of its class photos. Google has introduced some new features like AI ‘Top Shot,’ a Google Clips-like service ‘Photobooth,’ and Super res zoom. Google Lens is also now embedded in the camera and many features work even when you are offline.

With Top Shot, the phone snaps a bunch of pictures and then uses AI to select and combine the images into one where all the people have their eyes open and are smiling.

Top Shot lets you pick your favorite photo out of multiple captured photos
Google has improved their Portrait Mode, allowing you to select the level of background blur after you take the shot. You can even switch to what you are focusing on your image.

Google has introduced dual 8MP pixel cameras on the front of both Pixel devices this year - a regular one and a wider shooter for those group selfies. Google is calling these group selfies "groupies" and its sure to be popular.
