The most severe of these issues is a “critical security vulnerability in Framework that could allow a remote attacker using a specially crafted PNG file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process.”

Google releases January Android security patch for Pixel smartphones
Google has started rolling out the January Android security patch for their Pixel smartphones. These security patches are used to exterminate security bugs, but also act as a way to send out improvements and specific features to Google's smartphones.
For example, the December update included 13 functional patches to the Android platform, along with a fix for RAM management and camera performance on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. With the January update improves the quality of audio recorded while making a video on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.It looks like the January update is smaller than some of the previous monthly patches. It also looks like Google will be releasing the update at the same time for the first-gen Pixel and Pixel XL, which in the past couple of months was updated a little later than the 2017 and 2018 Pixel models.
The update will be pushed out to all three generations of Pixel smartphones OTA (over-the-air) and you will receive a notification when it is available for your device. Once you receive the notification, make sure your battery is fully charged, and that you are connected to Wi-Fi before initiating the update.
Such updates are usually sent out in waves so you may not receive the notification immediately. If you haven't received the update in a few days, you can try manually checking for it under Settings > System >Advanced > System update.
Google discontinues security updates for Nexus 6P and Nexus 5x
The Huawei Nexus 6P and LG Nexus 5X are the last two smartphones in Google's Nexus lineup, and over the past year have received security updates alongside their Pixel replacements. But it looks like Google will be discontinuing these updates with the release of January's Android security patch.
Both smartphones were commercially released back in the fall of 2015 and were guaranteed two years of Android version updates and three years of security patches. Both handsets receive their Android 8.0 Oreo update and were set to receive their last security update in November. Google, however, would include both handsets in their December update too.
Come January however, Google seems to have left its aging handsets out of this month's security update. With your devices becoming less secure in the coming months, it may be finally time to bid your aging Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X goodbye.

Google releases December Android security patch for Pixel and Nexus devices
Today Google is releasing the December Android security patch for Pixel and Nexus devices, and detailed the number of issues the update is set to fix. Besides the security improvements, the update is also expected to fix RAM management and camera performance on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.
The Pixel / Nexus Security Bulletin for December 2018 notes 13 "functional patches," in addition to one security update. One of the most important issues addressed by this month’s patch is aggressive memory management that would prevent some apps from running simultaneously. For example, snapping a picture with the camera app stopped background audio playback for some users.
Last month, Google confirmed that the fix would "keep background apps from being prematurely closed," referring to it as "Improved memory performance in certain circumstances" and "Improved camera capture performance" in the December security patch. It applies to both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 devices.
According to Google, other improvements to the camera include "Adjusted autofocus behavior" and "Improved camera shutter performance" for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. You also get "Improved contouring on HDR color on certain media apps" for the new phones. Meanwhile, the Pixel Stand benefits from "Improved notification visibility" and "Improved hotword performance."
Additionally, the update brings "Improved Android Auto compatibility" for the second and third-generation Pixel devices, as well as "Improved audio performance for when using Android Auto in certain vehicles" on the Pixel 3.
Another issue which involved flickering on the Ambient Display is likely fixed with "Improved Always On Display triggering." Other fixes include "Improved USB-C Audio accessory detection" on the Pixel 3 XL, while all Pixel phones benefit from "Adjusted volume behavior when toggling Bluetooth" and "Improve unlocking performance when using Bluetooth."

LG G7 One receives Android Pie software update
The LG G7 One is the first handset from the manufacturer to receive the Android 9 Pie software update. According to a report from XDA, the update which is around 821MB in size brings all the new features from Android 9.0, the November Android security patch and new functionality for the camera.
The LG G7 One is a member of the Android One family, which indicates that it runs a near stock version of Android which allows the manufacturer to disseminate the update out faster than they would for a customized version of Android.
With Android 9 Pie, the LG G7 One will gain a new gesture-based navigation, various battery specific improvements, camera tweaks, Wind Down and an updated Do Not Disturb, improved volume controls and more.
The update will be pushed out to handsets over-the-air, and you will get a notification when it is available for your device. At this point, you can download and install the update, after making sure your battery is fully charged and that you are connected to Wi-Fi.

BlackBerry KEYone for AT&T receives software update with October security patch
BlackBerry KEYone for AT&T is now reported to be receiving a software update marked ABI975 which comes with Android 8.1 and includes the Android October security patch. The update has not been listed on the AT&T website yet, so we don't know what changes it offers.
Since updates like these are rolled out in waves, you may not see a notification appear immediately. You could head to your device settings and check for it manually. Once you receive the notification make sure your battery is fully charged and that you are connected to Wi-Fi before initiating the update.Besides the AT&T variant, unlocked versions of the BlackBerry KEYone and the BlackBerry Motion are also reportedly receiving a new ABI087 software update.
While no official changelog has been released by BlackBerry, the update is said to be 530MB in size and include the October security patch from Google along with several bug fixes and speed improvements to the platform.

Google releases November Android security patch for Pixel devices
Google is ready to roll out its November Security Path for Android and the first devices to receive the software patch include the first, second and third generation Pixel smartphones, along with some Nexus devices and the Essential Phone.
According to Google's security Bulletin, the update which is dated November 5, 2018, resolves 17 issues identified on Pixel devices including enhancements made to the picture-in-picture feature found with the Android 8.0 update. This allows users to watch video while multitasking with another app on the screen.
Additionally, the update now includes an Assistant Logo to the Google Search bar on the first and second general Pixel smartphones. Customers clicking on this logo will be taken to the Google Assistant immediately from the Home screen, a feature which was available by default on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. The update also brings stability improvements to notifications.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 receives October security update
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is receiving a software update which brings the Android October security update to the handset along with improvements from Samsung. The update is said to be around 67.5MB in size and has the N960FXXS2ARJ4 version number.
According to Google, the October security update resolves 12 Android OS critical vulnerabilities. Samsung has included fixes for an additional 11 vulnerabilities found in its own software, including important fixes for an invalid free vulnerability in the fingerprint trustlet that allows an attacker to perform arbitrary code execution, a buffer overflow vulnerability in the esecomm trustlet.
Galaxy Note 9 users in Central and Eastern Europe are the first receiving the update as it makes its way across the globe. You should receive a notification on your device before you can download the OTA (over-the-air) update, but you can manually check for its availability by heading to Settings > Software Updates. Just make sure that your device is fully charged and that you are connected to a strong WiFi network before initiating the update.

Google releases October Android security patch for Pixel devices
Google has started rolling out the October Android security update for their Pixel smartphones. Along with the security patches and fixes you can expect from such an update, it also brings some features and improvements. The last security update was released on September 4th.
For example, the update improves the fast-charging experience on the Pixel and Pixel XL. The update also brings improvements in performance for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL handsets for certain protected media formats, and improved stability when using Android Auto. All Pixel handsets had their Call Screening behavior when using Maps Navigation, modified.
On the security side, the patch dated October 1st takes care of 23 issues ranging in severity from critical (8) to high (14) and moderate (1). The October 5th patch deals with three issues all rated high. None of the four Pixel phones required any security fixes, and no Android user was reported to have been negatively impacted by the security issues.
The most potentially serious issue, according to the monthly Android Security Bulletin, was one that could have allowed a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code using a specially crafted file.
On the Pixel 2 XL the update is reportedly around 54.5MB in size. Users should get a notification when it is available for their handsets, at which point they can initiate the over-the-air update. As the month progresses, we expect more Android handsets will receive this security update.

Essential Phone receives September Android security patch
The Essential Phone is also receiving the Android security update for September. The update which has the PPR1.180905.036 software version brings audio and accessibility fixes to the Essential Phone along with the security patches addressed by Google.
Just like with the Pixel and Nexus devices, the update will be pushed the Essential Phone OTA and can be downloaded when the notification arrives. The update should be around 82MB in size.

Google releases September Android security patch
Google has prepared its Android security patch for September and will be sending out an update to its Pixel and Nexus devices. The last security patch was released on August 6th. The new update, which is dated September 5th addresses 59 vulnerabilities while improving the Retail Mode battery charge for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
The Retail Mode battery charge feature is only applicable to Pixel smartphones that are displayed at retail stores and not useful to end users. Besides that, the update also improves Software Version Reporting, and the audio quality over car speakers (using a Bluetooth connection) for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
The security update will be pushed out to compatible devices OTA (over-the-air) and once you receive a notification for the update you should make sure your battery is fully charged and that you are connected to a strong Wi-Fi connection before initiating the update.

The update is being pushed out over-the-air and will reach all handsets in waves, This means it may take a couple of days before the OTA notification arrives on your device. You can try checking for the update manually by heading to Settings > Software update > Download updates on your handset.
Once you get the OTA notification, make sure you are connected to a strong Wi-Fi signal, and that your battery is fully charged before downloading and installing your update.

BlackBerry KEY2 receives August Android security patch
The BlackBerry brand is known for keeping its devices secure, so it's always a welcome sight to see the manufacturer release updates focussed on security. In line with this expectation BlackBerry has started pushing out the August Android security update for the BlackBerry KEY2.
The update is around 400MB in size and comes with the ABE181 software version. The update will be pushed to handsets over-the-air and you should receive an update notification when it is available for your device. You can try manually checking for the update by heading to Settings > Systems Updates > Check for updates now on your KEY2.
Before installing the update, make sure you are connected to a strong Wi-Fi signal. Also, make sure your battery is fully charged before you download and install the update.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 receives August security patch
Samsung has started to push out the August security patch for Android to its Galaxy Note 8 which includes all the latest security patches from Google, and likely includes a few bug fixes and improvements from Samsung.
Samsung started off by pushing the security update to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ in record time, showing the company's commitment to quick update rollouts. The update to these devices also included improvements to Samsung's Game Launcher app, and we assume those improvements will also find their way to the Galaxy Note 8.
Samsung actually started pushing the update out to the Note 8 last week, but had to recall it after discovering several bugs in the release. With the new release, we assume the South Korean company has taken the time to smoothen out the update for public consumption.

Verizon is pushing out the July Android security update for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Samsung Galaxy S9+ on its network. Besides the security patches, the update also brings a few bug fixes and improvements to the handsets.
The primary goal of the update is to add all the security patches which were a part of the July Android security update. However, it also contains multiple bug fixes and improvements to the overall voice quality on calls.
Among the fixes, Samsung has addressed the issue which caused the phone to reboot when the user unlocks the device using the iris scanner. Samsung has also fixed the issue with causes inter-carrier video calls to fail, and the bug that prevented outgoing calls from connecting under certain conditions.
The update is being pushed out over-the-air, and should arrive in waves. This means that it may take a couple of days before you get a notification for the update. Once you get the OTA notification, make sure your battery is fully charged, and that you are connected to a strong Wi-Fi or Verizon cellular signal before initiating the update. The BlackBerry KEY2 is currently receiving its first OTA update in the form of the Android security patch for July. The handset comes with the latest version of Android 8.1 Oreo pre-installed out of the box, which means the update will mostly be patching any vulnerabilities on Android.
Besides the improvements to security, the only notable change is the removal of Wi-Fi calling from the KEY2, but we expect that feature will be added back in a future update.
Before installing the OTA update, make sure your device battery is fully charged and that you are connected to a strong Wi-Fi network. Since OTA updates are pushed out on a staggered basis, it may not appear on your device immediately. You can try manually checking for the update by heading to Settings > Update on your KEY2.
