The Motorola Droid 2 is the sequel to the original Motorola Droid which defined Android as a serious competitor to the iPhone craze. The Droid 2 unfortunately did not live up to it’s expectation as a successor and quickly gave way to it’ competitors.

Anyone who is still holding onto this device will be happy to know the device has not been totally forgotten and that an OTA update is now available for the Motorola Droid 2




The update which is 14MB in size takes the software to version 4.5.621 and brings some much appreciated bug fixes. One of the issues which have been fixed is the bug which makes the phone turn on without any user interaction and another issue which replicates thumbnails in message threads.

You will receive a notification when the update is available for your device. If you haven’t you can manually initiate the process by heading over to Settings > About Phone > System Updates

The Motorola R2-D2 is unfortunately not in line for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, so any little update for the aging device will be warmly welcome. Especially when it aims at irradicating bugs which can be quite tiresome.

The Motorola Droid 2 Global has been updated with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The update will be made available OTA and adds some new features and bug fixes along with the features you can expect with Gingerbread.

The improvements include a Download Manager app which will help manage your downloads from apps and emails. Under manage applications you will be able to view which apps are running and how much memory and storage space they are using.

Shortcuts will allow you to type numbers and symbols on the keyboard without having to switch to numeric mode. You can now select and copy a word by simply pressing and holding on it (once to select, second time to copy).

The update also brings a new UI and you can now create custom app groups aside from App apps, Recent and Downloaded. The Contacts, Phone and App Launched icons have been changed and the App Launcher is now attached to the dock at the bottom of the homescreen.

The update is around 14MB in size and should take between 25 - 45 minutes to download and install based on your connection speed.

With the HTC DROID Incredible holding the throne as the flagship device for Verizon, it was hard to imagine a device that can dethrone it. Then along comes the Motorola DROID 2. The Motorola DROID 2 doesn't leap far ahead of the original Droid in terms of features with it sharing most of the same features as it's older brother. But it does feature a better keyboard.

It has been about 9 months since the original droid was released, and it already looks to be giving way to it's successor.
