Meizu Blue Charm officially announced – high quality meets low price

Meizu Blue Charm

China is known for its affordable Android smartphones, and Meizu is one of the rising brands trying to make a name for itself in the competitive smartphone market.. Its most recent entrant is the Meizu Blue Charm which brings a decent build quality and hardware at an affordable price.

The Meizu Blue Charm hopes to directly compete with devices like the Xiaomi Redmi (or Hongmi) which retails at just $100 off contract. The newly unveiled Blue Charm is priced slightly higher at å…ƒ699 ($112) but brings even more to the table.

The Meizu Blue Charm (aka Meizu M1) features a 5 inch 720p display, a 13 megapixel rear camera, a 2610mAh battery and a 1.5GHz quad-core Cortex A53-based MediaTek MT6732 processor. On the software side you get Android 4.4 KitKat with the company’s Flyme 4 UI.

Meizu’s lineup, the Blue Charm on the right
Meizu’s lineup, the Blue Charm on the right
Thus the Blue Charm neatly fits into Meizu’s affordable device portfolio, which includes devices like the Meizu M1 Note (Blue Charm Note) priced at å…ƒ999 ($160). This phablet sized device comes with a 5.5 inch 1080p display, 13 megapixel camera and octa-core MT6752 processor.

The Meizu MX4 which costs å…ƒ1799 ($288) comes with a 5.36 inch display, a 20 megapixel camera and a more powerful octa-core MT6595 processor.

Then we have the Meizu MX4 Pro priced at å…ƒ2499 ($400), which is the company’s current flagship, featuring a metal build, a 5.5 inch Quad HD display, a 20 megapixel camera, Hi-Fi audio, a fingerprint scanner and an Exynos 5430 processor.

The Meizu Blue Charm is set to be released on February 5, but unfortunately, initial availability will be limited to China only. While the device will likely find its way into Western markets, expect a slightly marked up price from third-party re-sellers

Meizu MX4 Pro officially announced with QHD display, 20nm Exynos chip, 20.7MP camera, and fingerprint scanner

Meizu MX4 Pro

After months of speculation, the Meizu MX4 Pro was finally made official, as a more powerful variant of the Meizu MX4. The device design is mostly similar to the MX4 but is more powerful, with a slightly larger frame, bigger display and a redesigned home button which houses a fingerprint scanner.

The Meizu MX4 Pro features a 5.5 inch JDI-made display which has a 1536 x 2560 pixel resolution. This results in a 546 ppi pixel density, one of the highest in the world right now. Meizu says that the MX4 Pro can achieve a maximum brightness of 450 nits. The display is also protected by a Gorilla Glass 3 coating.

On its rear we find a 20.7MP Sony IMX220 Exmor RS camera sensor, protected by sapphire glass. The sensor has a 5-element, 300-degree panoramic lens with an aperture of F/2.2 and a fast, 0.3-second autofocus. 4K video recording, dual-tone flash, and a 100fps burst shooting mode. The 5MP front facing camera comes with a 4-element, 84.4-degree wide-angle sensor which should be perfect for video calls and selfies.

The device will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants, but users will have to select a storage that suits them best as microSD expansion is not available. Other specifications include dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz), 4G LTE connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS and a 3350mAh battery.

The Meizu MX4 Pro is powered by a Samsung made, octa-core Exunos 5430 chipset, which is manufactured using the 20nm architecture. This chip has four Cortex-A15 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and four Cortex-A7 cores which run at 1.5GHz, using the big.LITTLE technology. The setup includes a 600MHz Mali T628 MP6 GPU while 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM ensures the device runs its apps and processes smoothly.

One of the highlight of the device is mTouch - a fingerprint scanner which is integrated into the sapphire glass-covered home button. According to Meizu, this module will register and process your fingerprints for 0.5 seconds, allowing you to either unlock the device or purchase something online in less than a second. The fingerprint sensor's sensitivity of 508ppi means that it will do its job even if your finger is wet or a little dirty.

The MX4 Pro also features a TI OPA1612 amplification chip, an advanced DAC master clock architecture, and other Hi-Fi goodies which should keep the audiophiles happy.

On the software side, the handset run Android 4.4 KitKat, which has been customized with the company's Flyme OS version 4. Previous rumors suggested that the MX4 Pro will run either Ubuntu Touch or Alibaba's YunOS.

The Meizu MX4 Pro bears some great improvements over the MX4 and comes with a $410 price tag attached for the Chinese market. The handset will be sold in grey, sand yellow, and white. There is no word on international availability at this time.

Meizu MX4 - Video Review

Meizu has been making it a habit of releasing powerful flagship smartphones into the market, but has had a hard time competing with manufacturers like Xiaomi. Now Meizu is ready to try again with their newest flagship, the .

The Meizu MX4 features a 5.4 inch display, 21MP camera, a 3100mAh and an octa-core processor. All this can be yours for $449, but only if you are willing to spend that sum upfront if you are living in the US. Customers in the US will be able to find the handset on online vendors like Amazon or eBay, or by purchasing it directly through Meizu's international online store, which offers free express shipping and covers any import taxes you might incur. Meizu MX4 to be announced on September 2

MeizuChinese smartphone manufacturer Meizu has just revealed that they will be officially unveiling their next flagship, the Meizu MX4 on September 2. It looks like the first couple of weeks of next month are due to be very, very crowded in terms of new device launches.

The MX4 will run Flyme OS 4.0, the latest incarnation of Meizu's interpretation of Android. The phone has been rumored to come in at least two different versions, a 'base model' and a higher-end version.

The higher end model is expected to feature a 5.4 - 5.5 inch touchscreen with 2560x1536 resolution, and a 20.7 MP rear camera (supposedly the same unit found on the Sony  Xperia Z2). The device will be powered by Samsung's octa-core Exynos 5433 processor and have around 3GB of RAM. It's also been rumored that all of the MX4 variations will come with support for 4G LTE, though that will probably only work for Chinese networks.A

The base model will retail for CNY 2,499 ($406 or €303), so we can expect the high end version to cost more.
