Huawei Mate 20 Pro officially announced

Huawei, the third largest phone maker, after Samsung and Apple, has newly announced the Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Huawei Mate 20 X during a media event in London. All three smartphones pack powerful hardware and unique features that set them apart from their competitors.

Design

Huawei Mate 20 Pro - Display

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is built with glass and metal, but Huawei is using what it calls its ‘Hyper Optical Pattern’ to make the phones less slippery in the hand than smooth glass and offering traction if you are using them without a case. Unfortunately, it is only available on the Midnight Blue, Emerald Green and Twilight color options, while the Black and Pink Gold versions don’t have it. Huawei’s now familiar gradient colors let their new handsets stand out in a crowded market of options.

The OLED display on the Mate 20 Pro uses a plastic substrate and is curved on the sides similar to Samsung’s flagships, giving it a aesthetically pleasing impression. On the top of the display is Huawei’s own notch which includes all the 3D-sensing and flood illuminator components needed to reliably unlock the phone or authorize payments with your face, plus have some fun with animated emojis.

The Mate 20 Pro also has an in-display finger scanner as an added layer of security and as an option for those who prefer it over face scanning. Since the Mate 20 Pro is thinner and shorter than the Mate 20, its slightly more comfortable to carry around.

The handset is also IP68 rated, which offers it water and dust resistance without the fear of accidental spills splashes and dunks.

Display

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a 6.4 inch AMOLED display with a 1440 by 3120 pixel resolution. It has a 119.5:9 aspect ratio and 538ppi pixel density. The display also supports the DCI-P3 color gamut, and is certified HDR movies on Netflix.

Camera

The Huawei 20 Pro features three cameras on the rear, improving the design in debuted on last year’s P20 Pro. The primary 40MP sensor has an f/1.8 aperture and a new technology called “FusionMind” which does 4-in-1 pixel-binning in a new way that is supposed to improve low-light shots even further. The 20MP camera has a wide-angle lens which lets you fit more of the landscape, and more of the people at a wedding in the frame, and also helps to produce some amazing inch-high macro photos. The third telephoto camera has an 8MP resolution and 3x “optical” zoom, paired with digital for up to 5x magnification

You can also combine the info from all sensors to form ultra-macro shots, and Huawei promises you will be able to get clear images from a distance of just an inch or so.

HARDWARE

Huawei Kirin 980
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is powered by the company’s own Kirin 980 chipset, build using the 7nm process and promising superior performance in the Android space. The Mate 20 Pro will be available in 6GB and 8GB RAM versions with 128GB of storage and with up to 256GB of special nanoSD card support.
The handset also packs Huawei’s fastest cellular modem capable of Cat. 21 LTE download speeds of up to 1.4Gbps. The modem uses plenty of aggregation technologies, making it one of the fastest downloaders we’ve seen this year.
The Mate 20 Pro packs a 4200mAh battery and the package will include an ultra-fast 40W charger. This will allow you charge your handset’s battery to 70% in 30 minutes, and will probably take less than an hour to charge it fully.
