NOTE - Before proceeding please make sure you have backed up up your data on your device.

• enable a wifi connection ('Settings' app > 'Wireless & networks' > 'Wi-Fi settings')
• set up your Google account in settings ('Settings app' > 'Accounts & sync' > 'Add Account')

One you have completed these steps you can proceed with the guide

1. Open the 'Market' app (from the Home screen or app launcher)
2. Leaving the Market app running, return to the Home screen and open the 'Settings' app again
3. Within Settings select 'Applications' > 'Manage applications' > 'Running' (from Tab at top)
4. Scroll to select the 'Market' app > press the 'Clear Cache' button > then press the 'Force Stop' button (Do not press the 'Clear Data' button)
5. Press the back button (to go back to the list of running apps)
6. Scroll to select 'Google Services Framework' > press the 'Clear Data' button > 'OK' (to confirm) > then press the 'Force Stop' button
7. Return to the Home screen
8. Launch the 'Market' app again, which will give an error "Attention an error has occurred..." > 'OK' button
9. Shutdown by holding power button > 'Power Off' > 'OK'
10. Restart, wait for wi-fi to reconnect, open 'Market' again
11. (You may have to reboot several times and check 'Market')
12. The opening 'Market' screen should no longer be blank, and many more apps (free & paid) should now be available

The Nokia N900 is an amazing device. We know it is capable of dual booting either Meego or Android alongside it's resident Maemo OS.
The device features a 3.5 inch touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded with microSD, a full QWERTY keyboard and is powered by a 600 MHz processor.

Google released Android 2.3 Gingerbread alongside the Google Nexus S, which was the first Android device to officially receive the new version of the OS.

So it came as a surprise that the Nokia N900 received Android Gingerbread through NitDroid before many actual Android devices.

We have already seen Android 2.3 running on the N900, and now you can try it on your own device.

Prerequisites

• Wi-Fi or cellular data connection
• microSD card, 2GB or higher, preferably 8GB
• Enable all repositories from App Manager:
  • Extras-testing
  • Extras-devel
  • Extras
  • Nokia official repositories
• Install rootsh from App Manager
• Install Leafpad from App Manager

Install NitDroid Installer

Open X-Terminal and enter the following commands:

root
apt-get update
apt-get install nitdroid-installer

Confirm the installation when prompted. If asked again, confirm once more. Close X-Terminal after the package has installed.

Copy the required files

• Download the NitDroid Gingerbread package
• Copy the downloaded file to:
  /home/user/MyDocs
• Download the NitDroid kernel
• Copy the kernel file to:
  /home/user/MyDocs

Install Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Open X-Terminal again and enter the following commands:

root
cd /home/user/MyDocs
bzip2 -d gingerbread.tar.bz2
cd /home
mkdir /and
cd /
mount /home /and
cd /and
tar xvf /home/user/MyDocs/gingerbread.tar
dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-06_final1_armel.deb

Next, open the multiboot configuration file:

leafpad /etc/multiboot.d/11

Configure the boot option

Once the .item file opens, check the device entry.

If you are using an MMC card, use:

ITEM_DEVICE=${INT_CARD}p2

If you are not using an MMC card, use:

ITEM_DEVICE=mmcblkop2

Optional Gingerbread updates

There are two additional updates available for the Gingerbread port:

• Download Codec Update
• Download VOIP Update

To install the updates, use the following commands. Replace x with 1 or 2, depending on the update you are installing.

root
mount /home /and
cd /home/user/MyDocs
bzip2 -d gingerbread_updatex.tar.bz2
cd /and
tar xvf /home/user/MyDocs/gingerbread_updatex.tar

Boot into Android

Reboot your device and open the physical keyboard. You should be prompted to choose between NitDroid and Maemo.

Select NitDroid, and your Nokia N900 will boot into Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The Nokia N900 remains one of the most unique devices Nokia ever released. It was the only handset to run Maemo 5, and while that made it powerful, it also meant limited app and game support.

With Nokia shifting focus to MeeGo shortly after, Maemo users were left with very little in terms of official software support.

That said, Maemo’s Linux foundation opens up some interesting possibilities.

Running Palm WebOS games on the N900

Because Maemo is a Linux-based system, similar in spirit to Palm’s WebOS, developers and enthusiasts have found ways to run unmodified Palm games on the N900.

Games like Need for Speed Undercover and The Sims 3 have been demonstrated working using this method.

Step-by-step guide

• Download a Palm IPK file of your choice (you may need a Palm device to obtain this)
• Download 7-Zip from here
• Use 7-Zip to extract the contents of the IPK file
• Locate the compressed file that contains “data” in its name
• Extract that file (ignore any warning messages during extraction)
• Navigate through the extracted folders until you find a file with a .json extension
• Connect your N900 in Mass Storage Mode
• Copy the extracted folder to your device
• Open X-Terminal and type:
  sudo gainroot
• Install required tools:
  apt-get install preenv
• Follow any prompts in the terminal
• Move the game folder to:
  /home/user/
• Navigate to the folder:
  cd /home/user/(gamefolder)
• Set permissions:
  chmod +rwx gamename
• Generate launcher entry:
  desktopgen appinfo.json

Final thoughts

This is a great example of what made the N900 special. Even years later, its flexibility allows it to run software never officially intended for the platform.

Now that it has been officially released lets see what this version has to offer:

• New games join the veritable arcade already on offer in Ovi Store. Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Zen-bound, Angry Birds (level pack), Sygic, Kroll, Weatherbug, and GoGadget are all available to keep you entertained. Important to note though that Ovi Store will do a full switchover this week Thursday, May 27, so these games and other for-purchase apps will show up then.

• Improvements to communication. Email has been improved with the ability to accept or decline an event invitation right there in your inbox, and Facebook IM chat has also been bundled in. The release also brings with it video calling, allowing users face-to-face chatting anywhere.

• Portrait browsing on the internet is a-go on the N900. Ovi Maps also gets the update treatment with changes to the UI, improving the experience of finding your way around. And finally, there’s also a change to the menu system UI with the first level now customizable.

The disappointing news for all N900 users is that Meego will not be officially ported to N900 even though the N900 is being used to test the Meego platform. However Nokia promises to continue to support Maemo on the N900.
Even though Nokia hadn't officially promised to port Meego to the N900, the community was more than just expecting to see Meego introduced to their devices.
