MediaTek Helio P70 announced - A mid range chipset with great energy efficiency and improved AI processing

MediaTek Helio P70 announced
MediaTek has unveiled the Helio P70 processor - a mid-range chipset which "builds on the P60’s global success", as an affordable alternative to Qualcomm's chips in emerging markets.

On paper, the Helio P70 is very comparable to Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 675 mobile platform.

The MediaTek Helio P70 is built on TSMC’s 12 nm FinFET architecture, and promises to deliver "high performance" balanced with "incredible" energy efficiency. You get support for AI applications, impressive camera specifications and a "fast, fluid and fun gaming" experience.

The octa-core CPU consists of A53 cores and performance-focused Cortex-A73 cores clocked at up to 2.1 GHz offering 13 percent more speed than the P60. The graphics processing unit is a Mali-G72 MP3 with a maximum 900 MHz frequency, while an integrated multi-core APU (AI Processing Unit) operating at up to 525 MHz offers 30 percent more AI power.

The Helio P70 can process photographs up to 32GB, as well as capture photos on dual camera setups with up to 24MP + 16MP sensors.

The chipset includes all the “latest connectivity standards” with VoLTE, ViLTE, VoWi-Fi, global eMBMS, HPUE, and 600 MHz (Band 71) frequency.

MediaTek announces two new 64-bit processors for tablets

MediaTek announces two new 64-bit chipsets for tablets

MediaTek, a chipset manufacturer known for building affordable processors for mobile devices, has announced two new chipsets designed for tablets. The MT8163 and MT8736 SoCs both feature four cores and 64-bit architecture.

The MT8163 chipset is designed for tablets that feature Wi-Fi connectivity only. MediaTek promotes the SoC as one that can produce AnTuTu scores in the 30,000 area. It offers four Cortex A53 cores and can support Android 5.1, H.265 video, dual band Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth 4.0. The chip can also handle screen resolution up to 1080p. The chip is expected to retail for as low as $5 a unit for manufacturers.

According to MediaTek, the MT8736 with its 64-bit architecture is 20% faster than the competition while using 10% less power. The chipset can handle high-end camera features including picture-in-picture. It supports FDD-LTE, TDD-LTE, WCDMA, CMDA2000, full-mode 4G tablet TDS, and GSM pipelines. It also carries support for dual-band WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth 4.0.

Both chips are expected to feature an AMD produced GPU and are designed for low-to mid-range tablets.

MediaTek introduces new Helio chipset lineup, due out Q2 2015

MediaTek introduces new Helio chipset lineupAlthough Qualcomm is still the largest supplier of mobile chipsets, its largest rival, MediaTek, is trying hard to shorten the distance between itself and the market leader, inching towards the maker of Snapdragon chips slowly yet steady.

The Taiwan-based chip maker already has the upper hand in the entry-level market and a slight supremacy in the mid-range one, as many representatives of these segments are powered by its chips. But more prominent presence in the high-end segment is still a bit elusive for the manufacturer; however, its upcoming top-tier chipsets might make it a bit more competitive in this regard.

This year MediaTek has announced its new Helio family of high-end mobile chipsets. The new chipsets consist of two sub-families - Helio X and Helio P. MediaTek actually unveiled details about only one chip in the Helio X lineup.

The Helio X10 is a 64-bit chipset with eight Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz. Additionally, the chip supports display refresh rates of up to 120Hz and slow-motion video recording at up to 480fps in undisclosed resolution.

There's no word on the specs or the features of the other chipset lineup, the Helio P, which is described as a family of "premium performance chips". We are pretty sure that MediaTek will provide more details about it as 2015 progresses. What's more, we should expect the first Helio-powered smartphones sometime in Q2 2015.

Undoubtedly, the Helio X and probably the Helio P chipset lines are aimed directly at Qualcomm and Samsung, which are the makers of some of the most powerful smartphone chipsets in the industry right now - the Snapdragon 810 is powers the new HTC One M9, while Samsung is setting a new bar with its 14nm FinFET Exynos 7420 chipset which powers the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge.

MediaTek MT6753 announced, a 64-bit true octa-core chip with full network connectivity

Today, MediaTek has announced the MT6753, a new chip that can help the chip maker gain entry into many new markets. The MT6753 offers eight cores based on ARM’s Cortex A-53 architecture, making it a true octa-core chip with eight independent cores.

This 64-bit SoC also comes with the Mali-T720 GPU for all your graphics related needs. Additionally MediaTek’s new chip offers full network connectivity which means it will work around the world.

The lists of networks supported by the MediaTek MT6753 include TD-LTE, FDD-LTE cat. 4 (featuring data speeds as high as 150Mbps down and up), HSPA+, TD-SCDMA and EDGE. Additionally, the MT6753 is compatible with the CDMA2000 1x / EVDO Rev. A radio frequencies. It also will work with Miracast, Bluetooth 4.0 low energy and dual-band Wi-Fi.

The MT6753 can support a 1080 x 1920 resolution display at 60fps. It also will drive a 16MP camera with certain features including picture-in-picture. In terms of video, the chip will enable H.264 1080p playback at 30fps. It also supports H.265 1080p video playback at 30fps, using less power.

MediaTek expects to start producing the MT6753 by the end of this year’s second quarter.

MediaTek announces first true octa-core processor

MediaTek announces first true octa-core processorMediaTek has announced the world's first true octa core processor. Unlike the Samsung Exynos 5 octa-core processor, which only uses four active cores at a time, MediaTek's processor runs all eight cores at the same time. This results in smoother gaming, web browsing and video playback along with improved battery performance. MediaTek also claims that the eight cores can be used without overheating

MediaTek is known for selling low priced chips to device manufacturers in an attempt to compete in emerging markets. Purchasing chips from MediaTek instead of larger manufactures like Qualcomm allows manufactures to save a lot of money. The company has already managed to acquire more that 50% of the market share for low and mid-range chips for mobile phones. Now with their octa-core MT6592 chip they have the potential to overtake Qualcomm to become the largest chip maker in the market.

The company needs to focus on getting one of the larger OEMs to use their MT6592 chip in one of their flagship devices before their competitors can produce octa core chips of their own. The MediaTek chip is being sent out to potential customers now for them to sample, with mass production scheduled in November.
