The Samsung Chromebook 2 was officially announced today. The device comes in two forms - a 11.6 inch model and a 13.3 inch model. The new Samsung Chromebooks come with an “elegant stitched design”, which is the same faux-leather styling that we can see on Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy NotePRO and TabPRO Series tablets.

The new Chromebooks are developed with students and teachers in mind, the new Chrome OS-based Samsung netbooks come in two sizes, one sporting a 11.6-inch display (1366 x 768 pixels), and another one offering a larger 13.3-inch screen (Full HD, 1920 x 1080 pixels). Both feature HDMI, USB, MicroSD card reader, 720p web cameras, 4GB of RAM, and 16GB iNAND Flash drives. The 13.3-inch Chromebook 2 is powered by a 2.1GHz Exynos 5 Octa processor, includes a battery that can last up to 8.5 hours, and is "optimized for Google+ Hangouts messaging and video calling" - since it boasts high-power speakers with enhanced audio quality, plus a "noise reducing array microphone". The 11.6-inch model has a 1.9GHz Exynos 5 Octa processor and a battery good enough for up to 8 hours of work.



Both the 11.6-inch and the 13.3-inch Chromebook 2 will be released in the US in April. The small model comes in white and black, and has a suggested retail price of $319.99, while the 13.3-inch one will be a bit more expensive - $399.99 - coming in “luminous titan gray.”

The video shows a new Chromebook called Chromebook Pixel, which is aimed at the high end computer market which is currently dominated by the Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display.


The video suggests that this Chromebook maybe designed by Google's own engineers instead of the company's manufacturing partners. It may in fact be the first successor to the Google CR-48 which first introduced Chrome OS. However Google has always focused on web technologies with their Chromebooks and Chrome OS. So it will be quite a leap forward if they make it a desktop operating system like Windows or Mac OS. Additionally the video shows touch interactions which may indicate that Chrome OS would be integrated with Android sooner rather than later.

In any case we aren't certain if this video indicates something we will see in the coming months or something Google has planned far down the line. This could also be a concept video which wont become a reality.

If the Chromebook Pixel is real, we should learn more about this device at the upcoming Google I/O so stay tuned for updates.

The Chrome Zones currently only have the Samsung Series 5 Chromebooks on display, with Google employees explaining the advantages of cloud computing to those who visit them. The Acer AC700 Chromebook is unavailable as it still hasn't been launched in the U.K.



The Chrome Zones have a Chrome feel about them being decorated in the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green colors from Google.

ChromeBooks were launched back in June following their announcement during the Google I/O conference. They run Google's Chrome OS which relies greatly on Google's online services and the cloud.

While cloud computing cannot replace the standard PC, it is a good option for someone who is always on the move and wants to stay connection to the web.

Chromebooks will be available from Acer and Samsung as early as June 15, 2011 and can be purchased from Amazon. Check out the features of the chromebooks:
