Google officially opened pre-orders today, Monday September 21 2026, for its Googlebook hardware line. First revealed earlier this year, Googlebooks introduce a dedicated desktop operating system built on Android rather than ChromeOS, engineered specifically around native Gemini Intelligence. Pre-orders go live at 9:00 a.m. ET through Google's dedicated portal at googlebook.google alongside authorised retail partners in the US, Canada, the UK, and select European markets.
The Hardware
Unlike the Chromebook launches of previous years which leaned heavily on entry-level specs for education and budget buyers, the first wave of Googlebooks targets premium productivity workloads. Google has partnered with five major PC manufacturers for the initial rollout: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.
Tier-one models including the Lenovo Googlebook 15 and matching variants from Acer and ASUS are powered by Intel's Core Ultra 5 325 Panther Lake architecture, with up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory, NVMe storage, and 120Hz OLED touchscreens in 14 and 15.3-inch sizes. Connectivity is firmly modern, with dual Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 ports, Wi-Fi 7, and full-sized HDMI across the lineup.
One design element worth noting is the Glowbar, a multi-color light strip integrated into the chassis across all models. It provides ambient visual feedback for Gemini interactions, background processing, incoming notifications, and charging status. It is a distinctive signature for the platform and immediately sets Googlebooks apart visually from anything else in the laptop market right now.
Android Desktop and Gemini AI
The more interesting story is what is running underneath. Googlebooks operate on a specialised desktop foundation developed under the Aluminium OS initiative, which bridges Google's mobile ecosystem with a full laptop form factor. Native Android apps run directly on the desktop without the virtualisation layers that ChromeOS previously required, with resizable multi-window support, low latency, and full keyboard and trackpad shortcut mappings built in from the start.
Gemini Intelligence is woven throughout the system rather than bolted on as a separate app. It handles contextual summaries, multimodal onscreen awareness, cross-application workflows, and real-time transcription across Google Workspace and third-party tools. Pairing with an Android phone enables instant hotspot tethering, shared clipboard history, notification mirroring, and handoff of active messaging and media sessions without any manual setup.
Enterprise-focused configurations add Google Titan security silicon and unified cloud deployment profiles for fleet management, which should make Googlebooks an interesting proposition for organisations currently running Windows laptops at scale.
Pricing and Availability
European retail listings have pointed to entry prices starting near €700 for baseline configurations. Final US pricing will be confirmed as individual OEM store listings go live today. Initial customer shipments and retail availability are expected later this autumn, setting up a direct battle for laptop market share heading into the holiday season against premium Windows machines and Apple's MacBook lineup.
This is Google making a serious play for the laptop market rather than just the education segment. Whether Googlebooks can carve out meaningful share at the premium end will depend heavily on how polished the Android desktop experience turns out to be in everyday use. We will be watching closely.
