Sony Xperia J users are reporting that they are receiving the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software update. Sony has still to officially announce the release but the update is arriving OTA (over-the-air) for some users. If you haven't received an update notification, you can manually check by connecting your handset to the Sony Companion software on your computer.
The update is around 392MB in size and should take some time to install. Users are advised to make sure that battery is fully charged and that they are connected to Wi-Fi before attempting to update. The update will bring you Android 4.1.2 along with performance enhancements of Project Butter, Google Now and the enhanced notifications page along with the other security and feature enhancements from Jelly Bean.
Its refreshing to see Sony update what we consider an entry level Android handset, when much more capable devices are generally left in the cold. While the Xperia J features a generous 4 inch display, its powered by a 1GHz single core processor with 512MB of RAM. Devices with better specifications that the Xperia J have been overlooked even when updating to Ice Cream Sandwich. In fact we have even seen capable Sony handsets chug under the stress of running Ice Cream Sandwich.
In any case we are glad to see Jelly Bean released for this handset and it gives us hope that Android has come a long way in being optimized to run on low powered handsets. Sony has confirmed that they will be releasing the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for their 2012 Xperia lineup by the first half of 2013. The Sony Xperia T, Sony Xperia TX and the Sony Xperia V will reportedly receive the Jelly Bean update as early as the first quarter.
This will be followed by updates to the Sony Xperia S, Sony Xperia Acro S, Sony Xperia Ion, Sony Xperia P, Sony Xperia Go and Sony Xperia J. However Sony has still to reveal a time frame for these devices to get Android 4.1.
Unfortunately Sony is not planning on bringing Android 4.1 to their older 2011 Xperia lineup. While we do understand that supporting such a wide lineup of devices isn't practical, its disappointing that they wont benefit from the performance improvements of Jelly Bean.
Sony has been very generous with their Android updates, especially compared to their competitors. But we have to respect their decision and hope that the developer community to be quick to port Jelly Bean over to those older devices.
