Waze Carpool now available across the United States
Google started testing its Waze based carpooling service a couple of years ago, and went on to expand it to a few US cities earlier this year. Now the company has announced that it will be expanding its Waze Carpool service to the entire country.
Waze Carpool is not an exact alternate to services like Uber and Lyft. Instead, it is meant to match people who are going in the same direction and take them with you for the cost of gas.
As a Waze user, you will be able to join the service either as a driver or a rider (or both). Also, the service encourages drivers to team up with Waze Carpool for free rides for everyone at their companies.

Google-owned mapping app Waze was updated to version 4.43.5.0 which brings support for CarPlay on devices running iOS 12. With iOS 12 Apple allows third-party mapping apps to be used with CarPlay for the first time, providing an alternative to the built-in Apple Maps app.

Google planning to enter the ride-sharing business with Waze carpool service
Google started testing a Waze based carpooling service in San Francisco back in May, partnering with companies in the Bay Area whose employees were asked to install a free app called Waze Rider. These users could then share a ride with other drivers heading in the same direction during their daily commute.
The drives would be paid the IRS average of 54 cents a mile to pay for gas and cover the additional wear on their vehicle. Google at the start did not get a cut of these profits for themselves.
Google is ready to expand the test to all San Francisco Waze users this fall, with the goal of making it a competitor to Uber and Lyft. However unlike its competitors, Waze drivers will be limited to taking riders to locations near the drivers' daily commute.
The San Francisco test of the carpool service allows users to take no more than two rides a day, to and from work. While any Waze user in the area can be a driver, only the 25,000 employees of the companies that Waze partners with are allowed to arrange for a ride.
With the expansion of the test, any Waze user in the Bay Area will be able to participate by being a driver or a rider. A driver will only be terminated from using the service based on the reviews they receive.

These users will be able to download a free app called Waze Rider allowing them to start or join a current carpool with other Waze users that have the same or similar commute each morning and evening.
The companies participating in the test include UCSF, Adobe and Walmart Global eCommerce have been selected because of their proximity to Google's offices. Having already tested Waze Rider with its own employees, this is a way for Google to extend the reach of their new app.
Waze carpool drivers request that riders pay them the IRS carpooling average of 54 cents per mile per rider to cover gas and wear on their vehicle. For the test period, Waze will not receive a percentage from the drivers. In a similar test conducted last year in Israel, drivers paid Waze 15% of their take.
If this test is successful, we can imagine Google will want to expand it nationally. It would turn into a source of revenue for Waze (and in turn, Google). Waze will be able to make use of its massive user base to truly make something out of this service.

Waze for iOS and Android updated with ability to send text messages to family and friends
Waze for iOS and Waze for Android have been updated to version 3.8.0 which brings several new features and improvements to the popular crowd-sourced navigation app. Now it comes with better social features, as it allows you to send and receive friend requests, as well as manage your friends list. Waze also automatically goes through the contacts in your smartphone and finds the ones that are also Waze users.

Additionally the update also brings several improvements in the safety department. For example, you can now now set Waze inform your friends or relatives when you are going to arrive at your destination. It estimates how long it will take you to get there and sends them text messages with the estimated time of your arrival. This way, you'll have one less reason to use your phone and text while driving. Additionally, Waze can automatically send a text message to some predefined contacts if you happen to get stuck in one of those unpleasant traffic jams.
Among the other, not so notable improvements, are the slightly redesigned ETA screen and interface of the app, which now allow you to easily share your route with your Waze friends. The app has been also given the usual bug-fixing, stability-improving treatment.

While that takes care of a big problem that prevented Windows Phone 8 users from enjoying the traffic and navigation information they were receiving from the app, it still is missing a couple of features from the iOS and Android version of the app.

Once you're in the program, you'll be treated to new features before they make it to the official release. You'll also be responsible for helping the team "find bugs and issues, providing valuable feedback on old & new features, and suggesting ways to make the app function even better". As a reward you will get to access to the latest version of Waze ahead of the general public, and the team is even planning to give away some prizes for the top testers.
