Mozilla is keeping pace with its rapid release schedule with the arrival of Firefox 7. Following Firefox 6 just over a month ago, this latest release is available now across all platforms and has one clear focus: speed.
The MemShrink Project
Memory management has been one of Firefox's most persistent criticisms, and Mozilla has been working to address it head-on through an internal initiative called MemShrink. Firefox 7 is the first release to ship the results of that project, and the improvements are genuine. Memory consumption is noticeably reduced across the board, with the biggest gains felt on machines with less RAM. If Firefox has ever felt sluggish on your system, this release is worth trying.
Firefox 7 for Android
The Android version has also been updated to version 7, running the same browsing engine as the desktop client. That alignment means the performance improvements from MemShrink carry over to mobile as well. Mozilla has also added a few new features specific to the mobile release, making this a worthwhile update for Android users too.
