Firefox 11 is now available for download as Mozilla continues its rapid release cycle. Following Firefox 10 in January and Firefox 9 in December, this release keeps the momentum going. It is not a heavy feature release, but there are some genuinely useful additions and the usual round of bug fixes.
Chrome Migration and Sync Improvements
The most notable new feature is the ability to migrate bookmarks, browsing history, and stored cookies from Google Chrome. If you have been sitting on the fence about switching to Firefox, this removes one of the more tedious barriers. Add-on sync has also been added, so your extensions now follow you across all your computers, ensuring a consistent experience wherever you use Firefox.
Developer Tools and Visual Improvements
Mozilla has introduced a CSS Style Editor in Firefox 11, giving developers a dedicated tool for working with stylesheets directly in the browser. There is also a new 3D page visualisation mode that lets you see the structure of a web page rendered as a three-dimensional view, which is a useful debugging aid for complex layouts. On the user-facing side, the HTML5 video controls have been redesigned and a fix has been applied to Growl notifications on Mac.
Windows 8 Metro Support on the Horizon
Firefox 11 also brings the browser one step closer to a Windows 8 Metro-inspired interface, which is expected to begin taking shape with Firefox 14. At the current pace of development, Windows 8 support could arrive within four months, which is an exciting prospect for users on Microsoft's newer platform.
