AT&T will offer BlackBerry Passport and BlackBerry Classic

BlackBerry Classic

AT&T plans to offer both the BlackBerry Passport and the BlackBerry Classic on its network. The Passport has been available for purchase (unlocked) since last year, but AT&T claims that they will be offering a redesigned variant of BlackBerry's flagship smartphone.

BlackBerry Passport - Video Review

BlackBerry Passport

Its been nearly 2 years since the full touch BlackBerry Z10 was launched, with BlackBerry 10 OS. With the BlackBerry Passport, the company is going back to what it does best, QWERTY keyboards and gives us a modern vision of what BlackBerry can be.

BlackBerry's choice to change the traditional keyboard layout, will take some getting used to with the Passport. Those who are switching from an older BlackBerry device or even an all touch device from a different carrier will find that they need to adjust to the Passport's keyboard. Other than that the BlackBerry Passport is a great choice for a mobile professional.

In terms of availability, you can purchase the BlackBerry Passport directly from the manufacturer's website or from Amazon for $600. This puts it in the same price range as some of the other established flagships, meaning that the Canadian company will have face some heavy competition. The handset is also expected to be made available through AT&T, but there is no indication of pricing or availability yet.

The message retraction feature will avoid those accidental messages that you never meant to send and you can see the feature demonstrated in the following video.

towards the end of the video, you can also set a timer that determines how long other people have access to certain messages and images. The content will not appear until a recipient presses down and holds onto the chat. The message will then disappear after the time limit has expired or they lift their finger up from the screen. BBM can't prevent them from taking a screenshot, but it will shoot you a notification if it detects that one has occurred.

Besides this, the update to BBM for Android also makes picking stickers easier and shows what music your friends are listening to in feeds. Additionally when someone sends you an image, you can request an HD version with more detail. The full change-log is as follows.
  • TIMED MESSAGES: Set how long contacts have access to messages and pictures shared in a chat. See the full description for more information.
  • MESSAGE RETRACTION: ‘Retract’ a message to remove it from your BBM chat. See the full description for more information.
  • A QUICKER STICKER PICKER: Adding stickers to your BBM chats is now even quicker
  • HD PICTURE TRANSFER: It’s easier than ever to get a high quality version of pictures
  • DISCOVER MUSIC: See what music your contacts are listening in Feeds

BBM is BlackBerry's proprietary messaging app and it is now available across Android, iOS and Windows Phone along with the company's own BlackBerry OS. BlackBerry hopes that by offering their popular messaging solution across their competitors platforms, they will get the world to once again take notice of their own platform and devices.

Still certain BBM features have still not made their way across iOS and Android, including BBM Video, which allows BBM members to conduct a video chat with another member. BBM Video is highly regarded on BlackBerry OS, so it ideally would make sense for BlackBerry to try and coax customers to use this service on competing platforms rather than allow them to get comfortable with what they have.

BlackBerry Classic gets caught on camera

BlackBerry Classic

Following the release of the BlackBerry Passport, the canadian manufacturer has yet another device in their pipelines. However, unlike the BlackBerry Passport, which is the company's top shelf business-centric phone, the BlackBerry Classic is suited for long time BlackBerry users who are more interested in merging the old-school features like a trackpad and function keys, with the latest version of BlackBerry 10.

The BlackBerry Classic would mark the third new handset released under John Chen's leadership. The first on the new CEO's list was the affordable BlackBerry Z3, which was manufactured by Foxconn as a part of an BlackBerry has with the contract manufacturer. Foxconn designs, builds and stores these entry-level devices, while BlackBerry installs the software and handles marketing. These phones are made solely for emerging markets.

The BlackBerry Passport followed as the company's newest flagship. It featured a 1440 x 1440 pixel resolution, meant for viewing charts, websites, and reports. The long battery life allows the phone to stay powered throughout the business day. Chen has already committed BlackBerry to produce a sequel of the phone.

This leaves us with the BlackBerry Classic, which is expected to launch next month. The BlackBerry Classic is Chen's offering for the die-hard BlackBerry fan, who remembers the good old days when the word smartphone was synonymous with BlackBerry.

The BlackBerry Classic is rumored to feature a 3.46 inch display with a 720 x 720 pixel resolution, 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, an 8MP rear camera with a f/2.2 aperture, a 2MP front camera, a 2515mAh battery, and a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon MSM8960 (S4 Plus) processor with 2GB of RAM. The handset even brings back the trackpad and function keys.

BlackBerry Passport for Rogers receives 10.3.0.1418 update

BlackBerry Passport

The BlackBerry Passport on Rogers is currently receiving a software update v10.3.0.908 (also known as OS v10.3.0.1418). Rogers was the first carrier to roll out an update before the device was fully officially announced, and it seems they will stick to the trend of offering quick updates.

Unfortunately the update doesn't have a changelog attached to it, so we are not able to tell you what's new. However we will update this post with a changelog when it is available. If you are comfortable with manually installing updates, you could download and load the files yourself. Alternately, you can hold out a bit, for the autoloaders to be created.

BlackBerry Passport is now available

BlackBerry Passport

Today the was officially made available with its unique design, combining a large square touchscreen with a touch-enabled keyboard. The device is designed with the mobile professionals in mind and promises to keep its users more productive.

The Passport is a premium device with flagship hardware. You get 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded by microSD, a 13MP rear camera with optical image stabilization and a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with 3GB of RAM

Display

One of the things that makes the Passport unique is its 4.5 inch square display, which has a 1440 x 1440 pixel (453ppi) resolution, 1:1 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. BlackBerry claims that this offering allows the user to get more done than on a regular smartphone.

Touch enabled QWERTY keyboard

Next we have the touch enabled full-size QWERTY keyboard, which includes features like On-Key Scrolling, Flick to Type, Swipe to Delete, and Fine Cursor Control. On-Key scrolling allows you to scroll through on-screen content by brushing your fingers on the keyboard like it was a laptop track-pad. This way, you never obstruct the screen while scrolling. Flick to Type and Swipe to Delete are familiar AutoCorrect experiences in which you flick upwards on the keyboard to use next-word suggestions, or flick left to erase the last word entered. Finally, Fine Cursor Control is a "cursor simulator", in which you control a cursor on-screen using keyboard swipes. This lets you zone in on specific content with great precision.

BlackBerry OS 10.3

The BlackBerry Passport comes with the latest BlackBerry 10.3 pre-installed. With version 10.3 you get new features such as BlackBerry Assistant, BlackBerry Blend and Amazon Appstore. It has a fresh look that incorporates updated icons and an instant action bar so that each user’s most commonly accessed functions are in the center of their screen.

BlackBerry Assistant - The BlackBerry Assistant is BlackBerry’s first digital assistant and can be used with voice and text commands to help users manage work and personal email, contacts, calendar and other native BlackBerry 10 applications. BlackBerry Assistant intelligently determines how to respond to you based on how you interact with it – if you type, it responds silently, if you speak, it speaks back and if you activate over Bluetooth, it speaks back with additional context because it assumes you might not have access to the screen.

BlackBerry Hub with Instant Actions - The BlackBerry Hub found in BB 10.3 gets the new Instant Action feature along with visual enhancements. This lets users delete, file, and manage the entire inbox by simply tapping on specific icons. As always, users can accept or decline meeting invitations, or reply to text and chat messages from social networks and apps without leaving the BlackBerry Hub. The Instant Actions feature is found in the left corner of the Hub.

Android apps through Amazon Appstore - The Amazon Appstore is preloaded on the BlackBerry Passport, giving its users access to a wide array of available Android apps and games. Users can download their native BlackBerry 10 apps through BlackBerry World or venture into the Android app store when they need to find more.

The BlackBerry 10.3 update will also be rolled out to older BlackBerry 10 devices including the BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Z30, BlackBerry Q5 and BlackBerry Q10.

[BlackBerry app] BBM updated with easier photo sharing, voice calling and more

BBM for BlackBerryBlackBerry Messenger (BBM) has been updated (10.4.4.8) for the BlackBerry platform with a more more streamlined attachment sharing that makes it easier to share files such as photos and documents between users. Audio calling has also been added. This brings the cross-platform messenger app in line with other competitors in the field such as Whatsapp and Viber.

You can download the update directly on your device through BlackBerry World or by using the following link:

Download Download from BlackBerry World
Price Free
Requirements BB 10.0.0 or higher

Open BlackBerry World on your device. Do one of the following:
  • On a device running BlackBerry Device software 7.1 or older, press the Menu key. Click Scan a Barcode.
  • On a BlackBerry 10 device, swipe down from the top of the screen. Click Scan a Barcode.
  • BlackBerry App World will instantly find the app you've selected.

BBM uses BlackBerry's private secure network and it was quite a hit when BlackBerry phones ruled the corporate world. Users would exchange unique personal numbers called PINs, thus connecting them to each other, and be able to communicate securely. However, as BlackBerry's fortunes diminished, BBM user share has diminished as well. BlackBerry hopes this update as well as BBM's relatively new cross-platform nature will bring users back to its service.

BlackBerry devices on AT&T receive 10.2.1.3014 software update

BlackBerry 10 - Bootup

AT&T is now rolling out the 10.2.1.3014 OS update (also known as 10.2.1.3337 update) to the BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Q10 on its network. The update doesn't seem to bring any new features over the BlackBerry OS 10.2.1 update, so we assume it contains minor bug fixes and performance improvements for the carrier devices.

The update is being rolled out in stages, so it may be awhile before it is available for your device. Once you do receive the OTA (over-the-air) update notification, ensure your battery is fully charged and that you are connected to Wi-Fi before downloading and installing the update.

According to the BlackBerry 10.2.1 changelog, the update will bring
  • Enhanced Bluetooth: Improvements have been made to make it easier to connect to Bluetooth devices and car kits than ever before.
  • Enhanced Photography: Take better pictures and videos with new camera enhancements such as improved focus and stability.
  • More Storage Space: Your BlackBerry 10 device can now support 64GB SD cards, giving you more space to save photos, videos, music and more.
