Google will release the Android 5.0 update for its Nexus line and Google Play Edition devices "in the coming weeks"

Android 5.0 Lollipop

Google has just announced Android 5.0 Lollipop alongside the Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet and there is no surprise that the Nexus devices and the Google Play Edition devices will be first in line to receive the update.

Both the Google Nexus 4 and the Google Nexus 10 are set to be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop, which is great news considering both devices are outside Google's 18-month window for software updates. We already know the Google Nexus 5 and the Google Nexus 7 (2013) will be treated to Lollipop as they have been part of the Android L Developer Preview releases. Now we know that the Google Nexus 7 (2012) will also get to sample the latest version of Android.

One Google is done with its Nexus series, we expect the update will also make its way to Google Play Edition devices and the affordable Android One devices.

With the release of Android Lollipop, Google clearly wanted to show that their platform can reach out to a wide range of device sizes, and with the Google Nexus lineup ranging from 4 inches up to 10 inches, developers will have a wide set of reference devices to work with.

The timing of the updates is still unclear, but Google has said that Android 5.0 will be rolling out to all Nexus devices and Google Play edition devices "in the coming weeks". This is definitely good news though, because Google is extending support to older devices.
