Amazon announces 2014 lineup with three new Fire HD tablets and two new Kindles

Amazon announces 2014 lineup
After releasing the Amazon Fire Phone, the company has once again turned to one of their more popular franchises - the Amazon Kindle family. Today Amazon announced three new Fire HD tablets and two new members Kindle eBook readers.

Amazon touts the Fire HD tablets as the "most powerful" and "cheapest" ever. The Fire HD lineup is led by the Amazon Fire HDX 8.9, a refresh of last year's model which looks similar but brings several internal improvements. You get the same 8.9 inch display with a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, but the company's flagship tablet is now powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor (with the Adreno 420 GPU), apparently making it the world's first tablet to feature this chipset. Amazon has also included Dolby audio enhancements, including Dolby Atmos audio, which offers a crisp and immersive experience, which the company claims is twice as loud as the Apple iPad Air. The Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 is now available for pre-order and will cost $379 for its (16GB) base model. The tablet will be shipped out to buyers on October 21.

Next in line we have a refreshed Amazon Fire HD, which is now accompanied by a smaller 6 inch model. Both the 7 inch and 6 inch models have a 800 x 1280 pixel resolution, up to 16GB of internal storage, a 2MP rear camera, a secondary VGA camera in front and a 1.5GHz quad-core processor.
Amazon also breaks new ground with their Fire HD tablets by offering them in five vibrant colors. The 6 inch Fire HD with 8GB of storage has been priced at just $99, making it the most affordable tablet from Amazon to date. The 7 inch Fire HD will cost you $139 and both are set for an October 2nd release.

Amazon has also released Kids Editions of their Fire HD tablets. On top of the hardware features mentioned above, they include kid-proof cases, 2-year worry-free guarantee, “best-in-class parental controls”, and access to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited for 1 year. Prices start at $149 for these models and will be available starting October 21.

The entire new Fire HD lineup will run Amazon's (Android 4.4 KitKat based) Fire OS 4.0 "Sangria". The latest version of the company's software platform brings several new enhancements and features, including Firefly, which debuted on the Amazon Fire Phone, ASAP (Advanced Streaming and Prediction) which predicts the movies and TV episodes you’ll want to watch and starts them instantly, and Smart Suspend develops a device-specific profile for when the tablet is typically not in use and proactively turns wireless off and on to deliver up to 25% more standby battery life.

While the new generation of Amazon tablets will come with Fire OS 4.0 pre-installed, the Sangria update will also be offered to the previous generation of tablets as an over-the-air update.

Besides the Fire HD tablets, Amazon also released two new members of the Kindle ebook reader family - A new Amazon Kindle which now features touch and the Amazon Kindle Voyage.

The new Kindle boasts a 20% faster processor, twice the storage and now features a touch display. You also get the usual Kindle features like FreeTime, GoodReads and Smart Lookup. The Amazon Kindle will cost you $79 and is the perfect companion for the avid reader.

The Amazon Kindle Voyage is a brand new member of the Kindle family, with an all-new design, flush glass front and a magnesium back. The device is 7.6 mm thin and weighs 6.4 ounces, making it the thinnest Kindle from Amazon to date.

The Kindle Voyage brings Amazon's next generation Paperwhite display with a 300 ppi pixel density, an adaptive front light which is 39% brighter, the new PagePress technology which lets you turn pages by simply resting your thumb on the bezel and pressing lightly. You also get an optional 3G model which offers free 3G connectivity for those occasions you don't have Wi-Fi. The brand new Kindle Voyage has been priced at $199 and will ship on October 21.
